  2. quote:Originally posted by MustardCat: Hey just got this game a few days ago (BCMG) and its sweet, but I just ran into a problem: I go to a space station then dock, and when I hit the log-in button, the game closes, with no error message. ... I started a new game then went to some stations and the problem doesnt occur. If you can figure out how to reproduce it reliably, post the step here. If not, it'll be almost impossible to tell whether it's an actuall BC Bug, Phase of the Moon, or AOL gremlin attacking your machine from its homeworld. Seriously, if you can post steps to reliably reproduce it, it will wind up in Area 51 and become yet another victim of the VCF.
  3. quote:Originally posted by Epsilon 5: quote:Originally posted by IceCold: The water is clean enough to be discharged to a processing facility. Even though the pathogens are gone, the chemical pollutants still must be seperated before it can be used. yeah but half the work is already done. Well, that depends. Somethings are much easier to remove than others. That being said, I was under the impression that the discharge water was straight H2O with inert pathological vectors. If it's anything other than that processing becomes complicated rather quickly.
  4. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: You can rotate them. From the looks of the bang up saved game you gave me, it doesn't look like you are playing the game the way it was meant to be played. If I ever have a ship that banged up, I'd retire. I should probably make commander incompetence a condition for courtmartial. In fact, I'm going to do just that in BCG by using the state of your crew and ship as the assessment criteria. (/me makes notes in BCG design log). Ouch. As a work-around for those using Supercarriers and wanting to leave the game running all night long here's a sublte hint: Throw the extra baggage in the MEDIBAY. Note to self: Blow fenixfireblade up as soon as I find him on an MP server for giving the SC such a wonderful idea.
  5. We're heading a bit OT but here's some advice for those with random crashes: Make sure that you are only running the bare minimum of programs when running BCM/G and Defrag your drives religiously. Here are two programs I use to make sure that my BC environment is clean: StartUp Control Panel Startup Selector First I run Selector and save my current configuration as ALL. Then I run StartUp Control Panel and remove everything I don't absolutely need and use Selector and save that configuration as None. When I want to play BCM/G, I run selector, save my current configuration as ALL and load my NONE configuration, reboot, defrag and play. When I finish playing, I reload ALL and am back to my normal environment. It sounds like a lot of work but in reality it takes only a few moments. The benefit is that until the Comms CTD issue, I have not had a BCM/G related crash for a very very very long time (more than 1 year). It's not guaranteed to solve the crash issues above, like the SC said it sounds like you have serious system issues, but it may well help track down where the problem actually is.
  6. There are huge potential near term practical uses: Sewage treatment: We (my employer) produce recycled water (~65 mgd) that is almost agricultural grade (it is perfect for landscaping and other non-human consumption needs), we also produce Class B sludge which is converted into high quality compost and methane which we use to generate ~60% of our internal power needs. We'll ignore the grit that's hauled to landfills for now. Using this system instead we could produce STERILE water and other non-hazardous byproducts (if I'm reading the article correctly). Sterile water is drinkable water and in a desert state (Utah) that's highly significant.
  7. quote:Originally posted by ChuckK: Hi all, Just wanted to greet the BC community and this seemed like a good topic.Welcome to the forums commander. I'm Tyrn, one of those annoying oldie, moldy types here on the forums. Make sure you read about required profiles in signatures. Another must read is the welcome message from Derek Smart. The first helps should you need technical support and the second will give you an introduction to how the forum operates. If you run into problems, check the manual and the VCF as they are a good commander's best friends; if your friends fail you, post over in the nOOb forum and we'll point you in the right direction. Keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times. The First Aid Station is located in the lobby.
  8. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: uhm, isn't that cruel and unusual punishment? Naw but it is fast and, judging by the sounds they make, fairly painful. Besides if a S Marine is silly enough to try and take on Wraith station single handedly, he deserves a chance to ride a STS-Firestar. Speaking of sounds, I about laughed myself silly as I listened to a planetside medical station perform surgery on my AE the other night. Waching...argh...chaching...ungh...and so forth. It was absolutely priceless. Thanks.
  9. quote:Originally posted by IceCold: Learn to be a gunslinger in this game. Missles seem to be a waste when your IOD can rip any enemy ship to bits. (use PTA for fighters) I only use missile for one thing: Space Marines.
  10. Must resist urge to tell kidnapping stories...mmmuuusssttt find neeewww and exciting things about the AI. .... Intruders are a riot and a major PITA, they make me want to flog Resnig everytime they appear. Sure it's not his fault they beamed aboard, but sending a handful of marines in their underwear to deal with a slew of GAM/CRI intruders? ROAST HIM! OTOH, I love to watch PERSCAN when the bridge crew is off duty, better than any soap or sitcom could hope to be: Why are Tommy and Sandy always heading off to the galley together? Better yet, exactly why were Medic 1 and Marine 15 in Shuttle 2 when it was launched on a cargo run? Right, searching for injured and intruders. Sure, right, that would explain why they were both in Shuttle 4 yesterday when the shuttle launched to help capture that disabled TER/INS Infiltrator near Polaris-1.
  11. YKYBPTMBCW (You Know You've Been Playing Too Much BattleCruiser When) you exit your screensaver and are startled to find TACOPS open on your computer targeting a TER/MIL Canlon. Worse, you sit there dumbfounded because Your BCMG cd is in its jewel case next to the monitor The Canlon is the new design from BCG and NOT the BCM/BCMG version It gets worse as your heart starts to race slighty because You're at work and it most definitely is not lunch time You now have to figure out how to explain to Derek that BCG appears to have taken over your machine even though BCG is still under lock and key Finally, you come to your senses and you realize that you are not looking at BCG or any such thing but rather you are looking at one of the latest additions to your wallpaper collection courtesy of 3000ad. Please note that this most definitely did not just happen to me, nope, really it didn't, honest.
  12. For now, use the transporter for planetside troop deployment or man the shuttle yourself and manually deploy. The waypoint deployment issue is being reviewed in Area 51. Keep an eye on the VCF (you'll note that the issue is already listed there) for further developments. [ 04-25-2003, 10:28 AM: Message edited by: Tyrn ]
  13. quote:Originally posted by Emmett.hendrick: Ok after the SC said this I did a bit of hunting on this issue. Like most of you I have a Geforce 4 card(a ti4200) using the 43.51 drivers and direct X 9 installed and I was able to replicate this problem but I also think I found a fixI'm fairly sure it's a driver issue, same video card but using 43.45 and no problems with saved games and no tweaks required. Which reminds me, I need to seriously update my profile.

  15. I noticed that E3 is in Toronto. Will this quote:New York Times, April 24th The World Health Organization on Wednesday urged travelers to put off all non-urgent travel to Toronto, dealing a potentially heavy blow to a city which accounts for a fifth of all Canada's economic activity.have an impact on E3? The notice from WHO came because of the SARS problems in Toronto.
  16. quote:Originally posted by Gallion: Wonder how much oil it takes to produce oil from offal? The real question is: Does it take more or less energy to produce a barrel of market ready offal oil when compared to producing it's conterpart from crude oil? Although I'm a programmer, I'm employed by a waster water treatment plant. I'll be very interested to see how this pans out.
  17. quote:Originally posted by Forever Light: Oh about the EMD...is there any prolonged damage to personnel or ship systems if you leave the jammer on too long? None that ive seen but I always feel edgy leavin it on too long. None, although it makes me nuts to have to keep it on for any length of time.
  18. quote:Originally posted by Kartoffel: Tyrn, sorry to correct you, but according to the BCM VCF, having your EMD on will prevent boarders.Quite alright and quite right, I forgot about that one.
  19. quote:Originally posted by Andrew Presby: My next bit of ground base confusion is how STOs work.STO's are actually a glimpse of what is to come. They don't function in BCM nor BCMG. Expect them to come round in BCO. This post brought to you by Acronyms R Us also known as AR U.
  20. Just remember that the military always informs its own and always does so in person.
  21. quote:Originally posted by Andrew Presby: This question is part of my continuing quest to understand operation of ground bases that I might reduce them to rubble more efficiently. Yours in destruction, Feld While I can't actually give you an answer as I'm unsure myself, I just had to thank you...the above gave me a good laugh.
  22. quote:Originally posted by Eboda: Sheesh, You need a freaking masters for this game. A couple more questions for the BC Gurus. 1. Where are all the intruders coming from? I'm sitting alone in space, nobody within light years of me, and I get boarded. I cant fly around in cloak all the time, how do I put a stop to this?Cloaked ships. Only HJ and cloaking will prevent boarders, you need top notch marines...see below. quote:2. How can I make my marines more effective? 3 intruders killed 5 marines and took another 3 to below 50% health. 1 of my marines sat in crew quarters and ignored my command to go searching.Make sure that your marines have all done their combat prep (Prep for Combat from the tactical menu for each marine). It sounds like your men are fighting barehanded. Marines below ~70% health or above ~26% fatigue don't like to work. Cycle your injured men through the medibay. quote:3. I think this one is a glitch, I was playing around with setting up way points for my shuttle to drop off a drone when I was attacked. I ran through the wormhole real quick to get away and gave up on the way points for a bit. After I was boarded, and killed off the intruders, my #1 shuttle was red, when I hover over it I'm told its 1 system behind me, with no crew on it. I went back and tried to tractor it aboard and it exploded and took my tractor percentage to 60%.Not a glitch, one of the intruders stole your shuttle and booby trapped it. Turn off power to launch control when you are boarded to prevent this. quote: 4. I'm still having trouble with my losing my target. I hit K to bring up the tac, but its still happening. Any other suggestions? Now you have me stumped. If your target is a carrier, it could be cloaking as that will cause you to lose your target. If it's fighters though, it has to be something else. quote:5. Does the CTL guidence require me to keep my target in the recticle untill it impacts? From the appendix in your BCMG|Docs program menu: quote:CTL Continuous Tracking Logic The target must remain locked until the missile hits the target. If the lock is lost, the missile will lose the target and fly aimlessly until it self-destructs. ATL Automatic Tracking Logic Once the missile has acquired a lock and launched, it will continue to track the target until impact. This allows the pilot to select another target once the missile has been launched. ATL/V Automatic Tracking Logic with Video Identical to ATL type but the missile also has a camera which allows it maintain lock on the target much longer. This info is also relayed back to the firing system. The camera also reduces the acquisition for the missile. If you compare CTL and ATL, you'll have your answer but to be absolutely clear: Yes.

  24. quote:Originally posted by Cmdr Chavik: quote:USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!There is also a command line parameter to run it in a window which you may like but it is also a use at your own risk thing. Go to the faq for BCM for those commands. The link is on the downloads page. Please note that USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! translates into: WARNING! This is not a supported feature and its use is not recommended. Any problems you have while using this are your own. Having said that, here's my thoughs on mining: Drop your drones and go on about your normal BC business. Come back when they're full and empty them. Lather, rinse, repeat. Even better, park your CC somewhere safe, hop in a shuttle and race back to where you dropped your drones. Empty them yourself and sell at the nearest high inflation station.
