Check your Primary IDE setting and make sure it's set to DMA. Mine was set to PIO and causing similar stuttering problems.

My wife and I use Kodak's DX3900 (3.1 Megapixels with digital zoom.) We also bought the nifty One-Touch docking cradle -- hit the button and it instantly transfers the photos to your computer. I'm pretty pleased with its performance -- I've even done pictures for my office's newsletter with it.
