  1. It struck me as a bug as well, but as you probably appreciate, I wasnt complaining at the time . I figured it wasnt for me to declare it as a bug. If you were suspicious I knew you'd say something. I'll have a go at replicating it, but it's quite a complex scenario. Give me a day or so to look into it.
  2. Greetings, as a relatively new Commander(although owner of the original boxed BC3k), I have an interesting story that reeks of inexperience. Just yesterday I was cruising around Earth in my Firestorm when a small enemy cruiser jumped in and began attacking a friendly transport. If they fit the usual pirate profile this attack would be swift, too swift for me to jump my bulky carrier over there in time. I dialled up FC-1 and set them on their way, monitoring the situation from Tacops. It took only a few second to realise my mistake, I should have sent 2 FTR's! FC-1 was taking a battering so I issued an RTB. The craft limped to about 200 off our port bow before the pilot and co-pilot both expired from their injuries. I tapped my fingers impatiently on the command console as I contemplated what to do next. The actions that followed are ones I wish I could erase from my records. First I sent out a shuttle to tow it back, but that didnt seem to work so i thought maybe I could send out a space marine to fly it back. No good. The whispering around the bridge began to wear on my nerves, I decided the best move would be to jump into a space suit and head over to the fighter myself. I cruised around upside-down (relatively!) for a while, banging my helmet on the hull of the ship, before finally gaining control and slipping into FC-1's cockpit. All very well and good, except i'd left launch control unpowered when i jumped ship and no-one would turn it back on for me, so i couldn't dock. Setting a course for the planet, I planned to set the fighter down, beam in the newly cloned pilots and get them to fly the thing home. Yeah. Great plan Gavor! Except the bit where you flew the thing into the ocean, all the while the craft's computer was droning 'warning warning'. But you didnt listen. Nooooooooo. You had to try and set down anyway (in my defence, the water was very shallow and I couldnt see it from in the ship). With FC-1 beached, I beamed back home and sent down a pair of marines and the pilots. No luck. The pilots couldn't get the doors open so I ended up beaming them all home. It was getting serious by this stage. The little fighter hadn't sunk to the bottom of the ocean yet and I decided to have one last look at it myself(and get in some more transporter practise). I beamed down, hit the door release of FC-1 and suddenly found myself back on the CC. Confused, i looked around then on a whim I checked the hanger. There sat FC-1! What the.....?? It was still all banged up, but how did it get....? I shook my head in bewilderment and ordered a course change to dock at Galcomm. I had a date at the bar with a stiff drink and some cocktail onions. NOTE: These happenings are all true. I couldnt get FC-1 back in the CC no metter what i tried. (i even tried the tractor beam of the CC, no luck). When i beamed down to the beached craft and hit /, i and the fighter both returned automatically to the CC. Wierd, but acceptable from my point of view . It was like the game got sick of my bumblings and just stuck us both back where we belonged so i wouldnt make a fool of myself anymore.
  3. very nice. That station looks soo much better than the stations in another certain game. Independance. Biased or lazy reviewers are gonna run out of excuses to bag the BC series soon....
  4. I'm still alive! A lesson for the kids, never assume a woman can't hear you. Even if she's in a different country. They hear your thoughts, be warned! Unless you're asking for another beer. Women can't hear that from 2 feet away.
  5. We sure are funny. I've always wanted to rig up our scales so when my gf gets on, it screams 'GET OFF GET OFF' then makes some relieved noise when she does. Women have special powers so she prolly knows im writing this. I love you honey!
  6. Sounds like Safedisc doesnt like your copy of BCM. Sometimes this is to do with your CD drive. The SC will probably know more than I do.
  7. I'd like to entitle this post, 'Gavor's Newbie Debacle'. Before I get started I would just like to say that I did play BC3k and i loved it. I even purchased the new and improved version when Derek released it. Sooooo, i'm not a total n00b, but its been a long time since i last played. On with the stupidity. Since acquiring BCM i've tried out numerous ships and castes with varying degrees of success. Last night I decided to opt for basic terran mil commander and do some exploring of the sol system. Course plotted she said as I set NAV to Pluto. Before leaving I decided to do no research into pluto. If i'm going to explore i'm going to do it right dammit! After arriving at Pluto I readied a shuttle with a marine pilot and sent it to the surface. It all seemed ok so the order was sent for him to land. My AE would be joining him ASAP via the transporter. In the transporter room a marine waited patiently with my AE as I stuffed around re-learning the transporter controls. Unfortunately I had let my ship drift perilously close to the atmosphere of Pluto and planetfall was established. Oh #&^. Damage reports began flooding in. I'll admit that a certain amount of panic ensued as I scrambled to take control and fly off the planet. This was hampered by my AE being in the transporter room and therefore not being available on the bridge. Stupid A/P insisted on not giving me control. Finally I resolved this hitch and we were soon drifting away from the planet into a holding position. (nice effects on pluto BTW. i love the BCM graphics, whats wrong with these reviewers? I'm serious too, not sucking up or anything. If I didnt like them i'd say so ) It was all quiet on board as I assessed the damage. After the alarming behaviour of my crew I thought the ship was falling apart. Thankfully this was not true and the worst damage was to my transporter which was down to 80%. No problem. Ill beam down and do some exploring while they repair the ship. Having solved the immediate problems and after talking down Resnig, who was hiding in the broom closet, I sent my AE back to the transporter. Ok, I was ready for hardcore exploring! Transporter controls set and locked. Beam beamy beam...... Whats that, my commander's dead? Er, surface of pluto a bit hostile huh? Oops. Excuse the non-action packed story, im at work and bored .
  8. I was playing around last night after finally getting BCM up and running. I chose a few different races and castes and ships to test them out. Had a lot of fun along the way. Anyway, I started a career as a Drodian commercial commander and made a jump to Mars. I didnt notice it before I left earth, but in the mars area I had a TER/MIL ship set to escort me. It followed me about as I looked around but I forgot all about it until this morning. Is this normal? Why was it escorting me? BCM is great SC, I'm very impressed with what you have accomplished. While playing last night I was daydreaming about the multiplayer possibilities and am very much looking forward to it. Hope you didnt get annoyed with me while I was getting it up and running .
  9. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: Thats pure rubbish. You MUST re-install ALL drivers under the OS upgrade. Ok ok. I've never done a win2k upgrade before. It has the drivers as already installed under 98 listed in devices after I upgraded to win2k so i was unsure if i needed to install them again. Anyway, BCM worked fine for me last night. I had 2 CTD's initially but after that I played around for 2 hours with no problems. Great fun.
  10. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: You still need the VIA drivers on win2K as well, btw. Ok. I did an upgrade from 98 not a new install (didnt have THAT much patience). Those VIA drivers are for 98 and 2000 so they should still be functional. I guess its not a problem to run them again just in case .
  11. SC. An exorcism may come in handy, keep the cross and bible on standby. I was mightily suprised on Sunday when, against my own better judgement, I installed Win2k and BCM worked. I cranked it up to 1024x768 and away it went first time. No idea why. Old video drivers lying around? After 1/2 hour I had a CTD and left it at that due to extreme tiredness. I would love to have upgraded to XP but I havent dreamed up a good excuse for my missus yet. 'I spent $200 on this so i can play a game', doesnt quite work. quote: Read the BCM FAQ and make some of the suggested changes to your BIOS. This one is going to be trial and error I'm afraid. Install the latest VIA 4-in-1 4.37 (Final)drivers Install the latest SBLive! drivers. It is VITAL that you download the proper drivers for that card. Creative have released so many flavours of that card that all they've ended up doing is confusing everyone. Did both of these. quote: Download and install your mouse driver and make a note of the driver revision so that you can update your - currently incorrect - profile. Sorry, will fix this. quote: Download and install your joystick driver and make a note of the driver revision so that you can update your - currently incorrect - profile. It would appear that I put the software version not the driver revision. Again, whoops . quote: Install DirectX 8.1. Make sure you are installing 8.1 and not 8.0a Install the latest version of Windows Media Player 7 Yes done. quote: Download and install either the official Gigabyte drivers for that GF2 GTS or the nVidia 2280 reference drivers I have the 2280 nVidia drivers. I might get the latest gigabyte drivers and trial them if I have more problems with CTD's. Thanks everyone for the advice. Thanks SC for the detailed help, I appreciate it. I know I may have sounded a little impatient but I have limited gaming time at the moment and i wanna play . I'll try to get XP Home. Be back if the CTD's continue. G
  12. Thanks for all the detailed replies. I get the feeling that my problem may lie still with the SB Live and my mobo. I was under the impression that the BIOS update from Epox fixed this conflict. Maybe this assumption is wrong. Yesterday I did a fair amount playing with the BCM settings and found the following. 32bit color works in 640x480. Changing the resolution to anything else will hang BCM when leaving the config screen. After a reboot the BCM main menu will run in the new resolution but it is not possible to run the game. It locks up or CTD after it finishes its loading stuff. At one stage I disabled mipmapping and managed to get BCM running in 800x600, unfortunately it only ran once. It makes no difference if I change to 16bit color. I may upgrade to Win2k (this has been suggested to me by a few people) but I dont know what difference it will make. Can anyone tell me absolutely that the Epox BIOS upgrade did not fix the conflict between mobo and SB Live? The problem is with the SB Live! driver. Mobo manufacturers can only do so much to "fix" periphial add-on equipment (i.e. sound cards). Read the FAQ regarding SB Live! sound fix. As documented in the BCM FAQ, that was the only way to "fix" BCM to run on systems with the SB Live! sound card. TTFN Thanks, sorry about the long post. G [ 01-12-2002: Message edited by: Gallion ]
  13. So its not a BCM problem? Why is the BCM the only game or application I'm having trouble with then? Other than this my system is solid. Theres aren't any apps in the system tray. My system is setup properly. I've followed all the steps in the troubleshooting document. Is there any hope for me? I'm not saying there's something 'wrong' with BCM. There's also nothing 'wrong' with my system. I just want to play BCM. Gavor
  14. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: It's on the previous page, but to simplify matters, here it is in full. OK. So its not a BCM problem then. [ 01-11-2002: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
