  1. Even though I recently switched to an ATI card after about 4 years of NVIDIA action, I NEVER used the PCI slot next to the AGP slot. In fact, they share the same interrupt and my MB manual recommends NOT using the PCI port closest to the AGP slot if the AGP slot is in use. So I never have. I am amazed that NVIDIA is struggling so much, if ATI's 3.4 Catalyst drivers are any good, NVIDIA may be releasing a new card this week:) Smokin Bob

Although i had the game running pretty well for a total of 2 or 3 days I've had to put my tower in for repair. After reciving the message "Hardware malfunction, system failure, call vendor for support." two or three times. Plus occasional CDT. I just want this game running smooth. It's under waranty so it should come back ready to rock. I'll let you all know how it goes. PS.. I don't know how to survive the next two weeks with no BCM. Maby it will just fuel my hunger "to secure the galaxy!!" anyway thanks for the support. I'll be back soon. I hope they get your system running again!! I am new to the BattleCruiser series, but I can't imagine how I made it all these years without it!! I dont know if its the market I live in (Northern Michigan, lower peninsula) or what, but so many great sims and games never make it to the local Best Buy, Software ETC (They had 2 copies of BattleCruiser Millenium Gold on the shelf, I hope there was more in the back...) or my local computer dealer. It is too bad, I am missing out I sure am glad I found it when I did, I didnt even think twice about buying it, and now that I have it, I think it is the best space simulator I have ever played. Masterpiece. Well, lets hope your rig is back sooner than planned so you can get back at it! I am also interested to know, if possible, what was causing your sound issues. Smokin Bob

I forgot to mention how I solved my 'crackling' once and for all--I went to the Windows Control Panel, and in there selected the sound devices controller, Sound and Multimedia, I think, I am on a 2K box at the moment, but you will see it. I ended up putting the Windows volume to 50%, from the 100% it was at. I have to turn the speakers up a little more, but the sound is definitely 'cleaner' with less snap, crackle and pop. Your mileage may vary, I am sorry I forgot to post this yesterday....stupid noobies:) Smokin Bob
  4. quote:Originally posted by Darkling: quote:Originally posted by rvs: Were it not for the OS requiring it, I wouldnt have one at all.The OS doesn't require it. If you right click on "My Computer" and go to Properties and then the Advanced Tab, then Performace Options, you can change your swap file to 0. Though this is only recommended if you have a Gig of RAM or more. Actually, I'm lying, you can set it to a minimum of 2 Thanks for the reply, I had been informed by an XP 'guru' (and personal research) that a minimal swap was required, but I never got a decent reason. But this was before (about the time XP released) huge amounts of RAM were commonplace. I currently have the Performance Counters disabled, but may re-enable them to monitor what, if any, swapfile usage is actually occuring. I have actually run without one, but that was on a Win98 box with the max 512MB RAM installed. As far as the sound issues in the first post, I have seen on some racing forums many guys reduce hardware acceleration of the soundcard by one click, sometimes they even do it to the video card, with mixed results. I dont think it is a cure, but something to try. Thanks again! Smokin Bob
  5. quote:Originally posted by Darkling: quote:Originally posted by Private Cyberoket: I need to know if turning your PC off at the power, without shuting down damages the PC at all.Yes, all versions of Windows after Windows 3.1, including Win95, 98, ME, 2K & XP, REQUIRE that you shut down using the shutdown command in the Start Menu. Otherwise, not only does it NOT erase what's in the swapfile, but it also may cause corruption of system level files. Especially on computers that don't have over a Gig of RAM, since some of the system files are almost alway stored on the swap file. P.S. you're right, about BF1942, now that I think about it I had upgraded my RADEON 7000 to a Gforce2 to get T&L, Game played great, but that's when I started having that Sound skipping problem on Freelancer and BCM, so I took the card back and exchanged it for the Radeon 9100. According to information I have about Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the clearing of the swap file must be enabled in the registry--it is not the default. I have tried this, and the amount of time to clear out the swap file is very, very long. I finally disabled it, it was taking nearly 3-5 minutes to 'clear' the swapfile, at that time approximately 512 MB fixed. I now have a GB of RAM, and other than the nescessary WindowsXP demands, my swap file is RARELY used by programs. Were it not for the OS requiring it, I wouldnt have one at all. I have no knowledge if they have changed this with the Service Pack, but the swap file is not purged on shutdown, proper shutdown (not for clearing swapfiles, for saving Windows information, if I am not mistaken) or not. Also, every time the power goes out, my computer powers back up just fine--obviously, in that case, there was not shutdown routine. I have corrupted the boot sector during BOOT UP, rendering the system inoperable until I could get to safe mode and select a restore point--I hit the reset key in the middle of a reboot (long story, concerns the lame monitor I have....). If I am mistaken, please correct me, because I currently have a 2.5 GB swapfile, fixed, and use about 20 MB of it:) Smokin Bob
  6. I heard a rumor that they spent as much on special effects for The Matrix:Reloaded, as they spent on the entire first movie. I cant wait to see it, I hope Agent Mr. Smith is somewhere in the mix..... Smokin Bob
  7. Does anyone know when the TSP (toilet service pack) is coming out? Thanks in advance, Smokin Bob
  8. I have been trying to 'capture' and format the BattleCruiser Millenium Gold appendix docs (I have the complete 3000AD appendix printed out) and format them for printing, but I am not having much luck. I usually end up with the left hand side of the docs page printed out, and thats it. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance, Smokin Bob
  9. Last night I was in a Roam scenario, BattleCruiser Millenium Gold, and my MK3 BattleCruiser had lost the navitron (and other important parts) so I was unable to hyperdrive back to Earth. I was floating in space, confused and mystified, when I saw that a shuttle I had sent to get some cargo was using hyperdrive. Aha!! I can jump in the shuttle, hyperdrive to the station, buy the parts and come back. I felt pretty clever until I approached the BattleCruiser and it (I think) proceeded to rip me to shreds:) I believe my IFF had been damaged, or maybe an enemy ship was lurking near the BattleCruiser, but I didnt see it. Stupid noob:) The explosion graphics were beautiful, however. Back to the manual...... This is an incredible simulator. Smokin Bob
  10. Some of my television favorites... Law and Order CSI:Vegas CSI:Miami The Simpsons King of the Hill That 70's Show Beyond the Glory Cubs Baseball Games Oakland Raiders Football Games Detroit Red Wings Hockey I religiously tape the following when they are aired: NASCAR Busch Series Races NASCAR Winston Cup Series Races Formula One Races My movie collection is too long to list here, but I do plan on seeing The Matrix:Reloaded at the theatre. 11. I have experienced the following twice, once docked at GalcomHQ, and once while orbiting earth, Roam scenario, following the BCM Strategy Guide 01 from the web: After accessing COMMLINK then clearing the comm log causes an immediate CTD on my system. Pressing the CLEAR button is fine, it is the answer prompt that crashes it. Smokin Bob

  13. I just got home, unplugged the MOMO, and the mouse is working perfectly now!! I didnt use the command line parameter during startup. Thank you all again for the help, Smokin Bob
  14. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: This is easy. If you're going to use a mouse, unplug your joystick. Anyway, I will look into it and see what I can do. If anything. I have the joystick unplugged (for a few weeks now, too much racing:)), but do have the MOMO hooked up, and I didnt think about that. I will disconnect that, and try it again. Smokin Bob
  15. quote:Originally posted by Sebbish: Well the -j command line parameter fixed the mouse for me, as well as the joystick, so try that and see if it works. Thanks for the info, Sebbish!! As soon as I can get away from this mass spectrometer and get home I will give it a try. Thanks again!! Smokin Bob
  16. After running through the first tutorial in BattleCruiser Millenium Gold (finally!!), I have discovered a problem, and I think it may be my doing, but I am not sure. I have the mouse control enabled, but when I hold the shift key and move the mouse to the right or left, I get rotation, not yaw. When I just move the mouse right/left, again, just rotation. I tried flipflopping the axes in setup, and got the same effect upon returning to the simulator. I am able to use the keyboard commands (L/R Arrow in my config) to yaw the ship and it works fine. I noticed in the post by Sebbish that a command line parameter has been added to include the functionality for a joystick, is there a proper command extension for the mouse? Any ideas what I have setup incorrectly? Thanks in advance, Smokin Bob
  17. I remember that ad:) BattleCruiser Millenium Gold is my first foray into the BCM Universe. Quite impressive:) I just finished reading your interview in Computer Games Magazine NO. 150, May 2003, Supreme Commander. I dont know how you did it... Looking forward to more, Smokin Bob
  18. I think the mouse control option is perfect--this option has been left out of too many games and simulators that could actually benefit from it. I dont have a lot of desk space (My first passion is racing simulators, that MOMO is big), so the option for mouse control is great. Well done. Smokin Bob
  19. Hello Everyone, I am a long time watcher, first time buyer. I just picked up BattleCruiser Millenium Gold yesterday at Software ETC for a very reasonable price. I was absolutely stunned when I opened the box--whats this? A manual? A real, printed manual by someone who cares about the product they are producing? I could have sworn it was against the law to include a 'Functioning Document Insert' with a software product. I am happy to be wrong!! And the command/map card is darn near perfect. I would have preferred a slightly larger map, but I have not been through the entire CD documention and one may be there, so please be patient with me:) To make a long story short--I love the manual!! Hats off to the Supreme Commander--thank you for the excellent manual, you did a beautiful job on it. It quickly became obvious to me that this is a very very deep and detailed multi genre simulator, and I need at least two more weeks just to read the manual. That is just fine with me, I have been craving a detailed simulator like this for quite some time. The scope 'feels' immense. I love the mouse control!! I am glad you put that option in, Supreme Commander, it is a welcome sight:) I will sign off now, I know the rules around here are pretty strict, and rightly so, I hope I have not broken any rules with this post, but I just had to give a few initial impressions on this Magnum Opus.
