  1. I am interested in the GBS system that I have read about here and there in these forums. I don't see it on the website for download, nor did I find it on my BCM:G CD. Is it available to the public or by special request? Thanks, Fiver
  2. So now that I have a solid grasp of the game, have blown the living daylights out of several stations, staged a ground assault and done a little training all while mining a moon somewhere, it is time to start fresh with my newfound experience. I select my Warmonger, buy some radine and shield juice and head out. Suddenly fighters appear from nowhere. I am near a jump gate, so that was the obvious source, but the spawn location still seemed wrong. After blowing away the fighters, I keep hearing "Warning... acquired" and "This does not look good." Yet my scope is clear. Is this a bug? Where are those missles coming from? What is that ship appearing before me and why is it so big? Didn't someone mention somewhere that a cloaked ship means a high AI? So this is what the afterlife looks like. RIP Commander Set of the starship Loki.
  3. The moment you described sound card problems I thought: is this guy running an AMD? And behold! He is! So then I wondered if his power supply was 250w? Bear with me because if it is, you may seriously want to bump that sucker up to 400. I have an AMD sitting on my shelf that I spent good money on several sound cards for with that EXACT same problem. Power supplies = the most tempting place to skimp when constructing your home system. If that checks out let's talk about your cooling situation and ambient conditions around your PC.
  4. quote:Originally posted by haguman: I have the same problem that my german friend has!!!! But the cause of the problem is not the same. I checked everything out. I have all the newest software(drivers, direct X, patches) installed. But still Nothing. I tried almost everything except praying. I reinstalled the about 12 times and tried to run it over 50 times and at every way(resolutions, switching cd-drives, etc. ) i could think off. Help me PLEASE Help me. I am desperate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are many people here who will be glad to help. First thing is to find out exactly what kind of system you have, exactly what driver versions, which product (BCM or BCMG) and other information. The way to provide this information is to register the product and fill out your system specifications completly. I would also recommend picking one of your many installs or just doing it again and document your steps followed by the result. Good luck, these guys are merciless on those who don't follow directions.
  5. CLASSIFIED ALPHA ALPHA 6 FROM: GalcomHQ TO: All Senior Commanders RE: GUIDANCE OF NEW COMMANDERS THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENT CONTAINS HIGHLY SENSITIVE MATIERIAL. UNAUTHORIZED DUPLICATION WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF COMMAND. It has come to the attention of Command that new commanders are unable to patrol and roam effectively and require further guidance. Given the fluid nature of the galaxy and the threats facing earth, Command suggests the creation of a series of challenges for new Commanders. It is further suggested that generally these challenges proceed as follows: 1. Gather a minimum number of resources through mining, and the suppression of insurgent and invading forces. 2. Begin incursion into hostile territory. 3. Culminate with an assault on a prime world of our enemies. GalcomHQ requests the assistance of senior Commanders and Fleet commanders in creation of proposed progression and challenges. Since these are being designed for the real world they will necessarily be broad and generalized, but based on the current political situation in the galaxy. GalcomHQ out.
  6. Some general thoughts: 1. Check your BIOS settings. If you need a guide, I will try and dig one up. If you are new to your BIOS exercise some caution as well as write down everything you change. 2. Make sure you have a large enough swap file. You may want to monitor and log your system stats, specifically memory usage or paging. I don't recall what utilities there are for '98 off hand, again if you need me to I will be happy to dig something up. 3. If you have the means, either try the game on a clean install of '98 or install 2000 or something on your system and try that. Depending on your free space perhaps you can dual boot to save your main OS. Just shooting in the dark here, not claiming to be an expert. If something wasn't clear just PM or email me.
  7. quote:Originally posted by Kill Crazy: I had the same sort of problem, no matter what I selected in the top part of the HUD display I would be taken back to a previous point I selected. I had cleared the passive lock target (which I'm sure isn't a factor here but I did it anyway) cleared the waypoints of the CC in the Tacops (which I'm thinking is what you lot are talking about in your fancy speak! with all the 'f' things) and that didn't work. I think what was wrong with mine was that the the nav comp was slightly damaged and the nav officer was off-line so I just put it down to that! when both were correct all went well! I have now started to use the ships icon on the of the screen for the CC navigation, makes it easier for me!!! There is a question I'd like to ask, I went to pluto and sent a shuttle to deploy a drone. All went well untill I decided to do some sight seeing in the CC. Went down there myself and as soon as I entered the atmosphere the ship took damage, got out of there quickly!!! There were no bases on the planet, not from the tacops mzones anyway and I was TER/MIL ,also no enemys in space so I should hve been safe. Do some of the planets have erosive atmos? Is this info in the star stations screen? I couldn't remember seeing it there but this post is from memory!!!! Yes, we are experiencing exactly the same things, or so it appears. Roleplaying the Navigation problem is a great idea. I'm going to send my officer to the detention hold for a few hours . As for the shuttle craft, that happens to me when I am viewing a waypoint and then select an incoming shuttle that is dropping off the drone. I won't call that a bug, because [RP on] obviously the pilot is not expecting his HUD to indicate the Commander is watching, and that kind of distracting during atmospheric entry can be very dangerious! [RP off]. SC, I appreciate the tips, but I have tried both X and shift-X, one after the other and the autopilot still seemed to reset. Since the problem has gone away, I'll just discipline the appropiate officer and move on. Thanks for the advice and by the way, I freaking love this game! thank you for making it. I will be purchasing a second copy of this one to multiplay with my wife, and will purchase two copies of Generations for the same purpose. Thanks again!
  8. quote:Originally posted by Cmdr Chavik: This problem seems vaguely familiar for some reason but it also seems extremely old. Let me think on that. It may be several days before I remember a keyword I can plug into the search function. Perhaps never For now you can do either of two things. #1) Allow the Autopilot to complete its mission. In other words, once you engage autopilot do not disengage autopilot and fly through the gate manually. That defeats the purpose of autopilot IMO. Then target Europa and use shift + 9 to get there. #2) Fly through the gate manually. "L" to activate CVD. "." or "," (period or comma) to cycle to target TO..Jupiter, "F" to assign flight path, shift + 9 and when you get there use thrusters to approach the gate and complete the jump. Once you target Europa use shift + 9 to hyper there. I also notice that in your system profile your product is BCM. I will have to crank that one up and see what's up. Thank you for the advice, and for pointing out the error in my profile. BCMG is indeed what I am playing and I have updated my profile accordingly.
  9. Oh and SC, I just tried it using X to cancel the target before specifyig a new FP target. Autopilot still switched back to GalcomHQ. It isn't a big deal as long as I fly far enough from the jump gate before designating the new target or setup a flight path in Navitron first (it seems to be acting fine now ) everything works great.
  10. quote:Originally posted by Eclipse: Make sure you haven't set a waypoint in Navitron. I haven't. It is was a new game that I quit immediatly after starting, and then restarted the game. Trying to head to the moon of jupiter using the steps I listed was the first thing I did. Thanks for mentioning the Navitron though. I noticed later that I was having trouble clearing a path and setting a new one. Perhaps I need to review a bit more just to be sure of what is happening. quote:Originally posted by Gallion: Use the F key to Designate Flight Path Target. Ref: BCM/BCMG Game Commands card. Also in the manual.I may be misunderstanding. On step six I specify pressing the f key. Caps lock is off and I do not press shift because on the card it seems to refer to the key or key combination, not the case state. e.g. it specifies A for autopilot and SHIFT-A for AI mode autopilot. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: Whatever the FP: is at the top of the HUD display is the current FP target, regardless of what you have in the CVD. And thats where the AP will take the craft. Just cancel the FP target, pick the right now, re-enable it and it will work just fine. Thanks, you helped me clarify what is happening. The moon is clearly designated at the top of my HUD as the flight path. When I engage the autopilot (with A, not shift-A). The FP changes. I suspect this is related to some strange Navitron behavior that I thought might have been error on my part. Now I task switch all the time, and you mentioned somewhere else that running in windowed mode is not supported. I would assume task switching is not supprted either. The problem is probably just on my side as it is hard to imagine something like that would go unreported, but any further advice is welcome (aside from don't task switch or run in windowed mode. I'll confirm tomorrow if that is causing it, though I doubt it.)
  11. quote:Originally posted by Race Bannon IV: Well Fiver to answer your question, since each object of addiction is different, the approach has to be tweaked to fit it. But more or less, the approach would still follow a Cognitive-Behavioral treatment modality(at least if I was doing it)since it deals with challenging the thoughts that drive the addiction and then attacking the behavior. Since a lot of addiction counseling is group based, a "gamers only" approach is needed since we dont want them in with alcoholics and cocaine addicts, as they have little in common with them. I hope that answers your question. Thank you, that makes sense.
  12. Ok, being this new to the game I will assume it is not a bug, but rather ignorance on my part. My autopilot appears to take me to the wrong location. Here is the situation. 1. Load my saved game. Terran Commander with a Battlecruiser MK3. I am in the earth region. 2. Use "." to target the jumpgate to Jupiter. 3. Engage autopilot. 4. Disengage autopilot and manually fly through the gate. 5. Use "." to select the moon Europa. 6. Press "f" to designate flight path target. 7. Press "a" for autopilot, and end up immediately on the Earth side of the gate with GalcomHQ selected as the flight path target. If you repeat steps one through 6, and thrust away from the gate before engaging the autopilot it still happens. What am I doing wrong?
  13. quote:Originally posted by Bandus: I absoutlely agree on the point that when someone explodes/implodes it is their own fault. However, as can be clearly seen most people in this world are not able to or simply won't admit that is the truth. They want to place the blame for their actions elsewhere. They won't step up and say, "Yes. My son was addicted to Everquest. He had a serious problem. I was too busy to give him the attention he need to avoid his problem." That is sad, sad truth. Especially since going through the pain of that kind of honesty can really make a big positive difference in life. quote:How far are they going to make gaming companies go to protect themselves?I predict a few lawsuits, but have no idea how successfull they will be. Fear says they will ruin the gaming industry... though to be honest it could use a shakeup, just not that kind of a shakeup. Hope says the lawsuits will die in court and the gaming industry will redifine itself. quote: Addictive personalities will always seek out some outlet to manifest itself in the people who suffer with them. I have been to a seminar on gaming addiction and frankly I feel it will be more widely accepted and treatment for it will be somewhat common. Since addiction treatment is my profession I can safely say the things people become addicted to do not cause the addiction. There is a segment of the population that will always be vulnerable no matter what. Now having said that I once played Halo for 10 hrs straight.A chance to ask the expert . Would the treatment for addiction basically be the same, regardless of what the person is addicted to? What I am suggesting is that the fundemental flaw/disorder that results in addiction is what would need to be addressed, and therefore I wonder why there would be a need to have a treatment specifically for video game addiction.
  14. The notion that there is a real connection to be made strikes me as very bad logic. Let me give a couple examples. I know that it is not likely anybody here thinks the game or game company is responsible, but I still gotta put a fine point on this. 1. Someone uses 'uppers' to study for a final exam, the person dies after studying for thirty hours. Therefore exams are bad. 2. A guy gets drunk at a bar, gets in his car and kills three people. Therefore bars are bad. 3. A kid plays Monopoly every waking hour for three days only to loose the game. He gets a gun and shoots the person he lost to. Therefor Monopoly is bad. My other examples might be considered flamebait because they touch a bit on hotly debated social concernes. One of the best definitions of addiction is continuing something when you don't want to or in the face of negative concequences. The actual object of addiction is practically and ironically irrelevant. In point of fact I was on codine for (on my doctors orders) for several weeks and my body came to expect and use it. I had a hard time sleeping the first couple days off of it and thought it would be nice to have a little more. Not being a person who has to worry about addiction it cleared up and I only thought about it again as I was writing this post. To be blunt when someone self destructs, that person is the problem and not anything else.

Thanks for the heads up. quote:its not 100% safe though, other ships can wind up there. also running real hard into an object can sometimes send u reverse speed into Null space. and once u get the HSD artifact, u can get there real fast. Not a perfect hidout then. quote:Null space was created to simulate the area of space outside the boundaries on the planetary regions (i think i remember SC mentioning this) It was mentioned in the other thread about null space that someone got there with just afterburners. That of course tells us something about the odds of flying manually between systems rather then jumping. The galactica would never have made it home in this universe... and considering the horror of the 1980 series, that is a good thing. Anyway, thanks for the quick response.
  16. quote:Originally posted by Bandus: I got my September 2003 issue of Computer Gaming World last night and I was flipping through it when I bumped into the following article: snip Some of you may have read this article somewhere else, but this is the first time I've seen it. Besides the intial, WTF, you've gotta be kidding me factor, I started thinking about this more and more. I also heard a story recently about a young adult who killed himself over losing a character to perma-death in some MMPORG. I'd like to analyze this a little, not simply with replies saying, "That guys dumb, or he is obsessed." That?s obvious. I want to know if anyone could actually comprehend spending 86 hours on a computer. I want to know if anyone has ever been so obsessed with a game, that they got so attached to their characters, that they went through actual withdraws over losing it. I'm not trying to start a "Gamers Anonymous" thing or anything like that, I'm truly intrigued by this. I'd like to pose a question directly to the SC as well. While this is probably one of those things that you gotta "cross when you get to that bridge," I want ot know what you would do? What would you do, SC, if one day you got a call saying some guy/girl had played BC for 86 hours straight and died of exhaustion and now his parents were sueing you. I mean, as ludicrous as it sounds, people are winning lawsuits that dumb these days. What could/would you do? Anyhow, lets see where this discussion goes. That story has gone around, and my first reaction was that it is an urban legend. SNOPES has nothing on it though with a quick search, so... Exhaustion is a strange cause of death. It may have been simplified for general consumption, but unless something VERY strange happens such as being on speed you will pass out long before you die. Though he was in a coffee shop, something more then caffeine would generally need to be in his system. After the first 48-72 hours he would experience auditory and visual hallucinations as well as general disorientation, especially if he is relying on caffeine. As for the culpability of the coffee shop, the article reports a very specific number for how long he has been up. 3.5 days. Since he is dead and other patrons have come and gone we can guess that either the reporter just made up the number or the coffee shop was aware that this guy that had been buying triple shot espressos while sitting at his computer and scaring off the other customers with his smell was probably in some kind of trouble. I mean, considering how jittery and sweaty all that coffee would make him after the first 48 hours, he couldn't have been pleasant to be around and one would expect a coffee shop to kick him out or call the police to haul him out. We can certainly expect that regular customers who might have noticed him there might comment. Something interesting may have happened but either I don't know enough about coffee shops or the culture in that part of the world or the important information was ignored for the sake of talking about video game addiction. As far as video game addiction goes, I have played at LAN parties for 24 hours at a time, gone home and slept for a few before going back, but that was my limit. In general though someone else will need to talk about the addiction part. I can turn the computer off any time I want... really... any time...

  19. Ok, I am posting this in Tips, Tricks & Techniques section because I am looking for spoiler information that others may wish to avoid. I have entered null space twice, both times on escort diplomat 1 mission. At first I thought it was a fun little diversion, perhaps a nice place to retreat when things got rough but entering it quickly at will seems to be unlikely. Does someone know a way to do this? My second question, I have a theory the Galaxians and null space are related somehow. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Third question, any commanders explored null space enough to shed any light on it? That is probably a funny question since based on the name alone I expect it to be all dark, though there ARE stars in the distance.

The last thing you want as an answer to a query is see Manual, page 39, para 3 TTFN TTFN Actually that is usually the kind of help I am looking for . It will probably be quite a while before I have any questions that are not already well covered. The forums have been of great assistance already.

    Phone Booth

Points off because a girl in it isn't hot??? Hrmph. I'd give it 8/10 because I thought it was too preachy.
  23. Many people like Ad-Aware but in my experience it only catches about 70% of adware/spyware. Try running SpyBot if the above advice doesn't work and your homepage keeps getting reset to something unwanted.
  24. First (while bowing deeply before Supreme Commander) let me say hello to everyone. Ok, so I am browsing The Underdogs dreaming of games such as Elite and Begin when they point me to BC3000. I start reading and my heart stops. It is everything I ever wanted in a game. Wiping the drool off my keyboard and pressing forward I learn it is a free download. O hurray! Then I learn it won't run under Windows XP no matter what I can think of (and I can usually get around these things). My hopes crushed, I search the net for guidance. I thrill to find that a new version of the game is out, and compatible with XP! Placing the order and bracing myself for the extreme cost of having it shipped to a re-mailing service to get it to Bermuda, I wait. During this time I update my drivers, read every thread, the troubleshooting FAQ and the original documentation that I downloaded from this site. And I get scared. Who is this SC guy and why is he banning everyone? Dare I ever join the forum? Will this game actually run? Finally the game arrives. Shouting to my fellow workers that bliss has arrived in Bermuda I rush to pick it up. Taking it home, I disable Norton, uninstall Nero and install the Microsoft Safedisk fix, as well as confirm I have all relevant video codecs. I install the game and it run it. IT WORKED! I was so happy I actually played for an hour before quitting and getting the patch to install. After installing the patch, I launch the game and it asks me for the correct CD. I remove it completely, reinstall, re-patch and the same thing happens again. Turns out the website I went to for the patch listed the BCM and BCM:G patches on the same screen, and since I downloaded and installed the patch with the highest number rather then the correct patch... Well anyway, the moral of the story is I expect SC to ban me for an infraction that I am unaware of making, you should always double check your patch version and most importantly... I have the game I have waited a couple decades for!!! Thank you for listening.
