  1. In RC3 I usually edit my assets.ini file so my craft of choice has storage tanks that come loaded with 9999 units of iridium. Whenever I need money, I just sell some iridium. This isn't possible in RC4, and wont be in future patches, as the game wont run with any modified files. Dont ask SC to change this either, I've tried and it's just not going to change.
  2. Wow, suprised Age of Empires 2 has hung in there for *5* years.

Which, as you probably noticed by now, no longer works in RC4 now that I have re-enabled the MD5 check for that file. Yeah, just now noticed actually. Whyyy? Please consider re-disabling the check sometime in the future, or something. Flying around in modified cap ships was one of my fav things to do! Guess I'll be reverting back to RC3
  4. quote:Originally posted by Cmdr Ranger: My vote goes for the llamaed out Garid... if you want to play a cruiser, but also want the option of cloak and fighters, try modifying the data/asset.ini to include fighters/cloak on your favorite cruiser. Make sure you back-up the original asset.ini first though. Its pretty easy to do... I added a couple of light fighters to my Garid just so I could hop in and do some dog fighting if I wanted . Interestingly, the game didn't have a problem with me moding the asset.ini, but changing anything in the items.ini made it impossible to load the game. Also can modify the marine/oc loadout, so if you like cruisers but feel like you need some more ground stike capablity, just add some marines and heavy oc's. I like the garid, too. It's my fav cruiser. I've also done the same thing with modifying the assets.ini file. As for why the game wont load when you modify any of the other ini files, well, thats because SC has allowed you to modify the assets.ini file, while the rest have something akin to a CRC check to make sure they haven't been modified. To keep this post on topic-- I also like the Sunflash for it's large complement of turrets. I used to like the Battlecruiser MkIII a lot, but since it used to be your ONLY choice in older BC titles, I'm a little tired of it and usually want to use something different. Firestorm is my fav carrier for doing raids on enemy planetary bases, due it it's huge compliment of marines and support craft.
  5. So far I've spent a lot of time doing massive strikes on raider bases on earth. I fly down stealthily in a shuttle a few kilometers from the target base, get out, and begin setting waypoints for my fighters, shuttles, and ground vehicles. I watch from my vantage point as strike begins according to plan. First the fighters come in. The base wakes up as it goes to full alert and launches fighters in defense. While the scene starts to look like an angry bee's nest, my shuttles arrive. Amidst all the commotion, they slip in, deploy thier ground vehicles, and dust off mostly unnoticed and unscathed. By the time my marines and ground forces take out most of the air defense, the fighter crafts are mostly out of missiles-- now dogfighting with the remaining enemy fighters, and looking a little ragged. I order my CC to follow the waypoints I set. Within a few moments, the magnificent Firestorm enters the atmosphere in a menacing fiery bravado. I recall the four fighters, while my CC riegns immolating death upon the enemy with it's PTA system. I hop in my shuttle and return to my CC, as the swarm of enemy fighters begin to converge on my CC. Once inside, I order the FC pilots into FCs 5 thru 8. I launch the fighters with Defend CC orders. It doesn't take long for my renewed fighters to take out the remaining enemy fighters. While they do this, I'm organizing an attack force of marines. When they're ready, we pile into a shuttle and I fly it down to the remaining enemy barraks. We hop out and begind assault on the enemy marines, holding our position close to the shuttle. I use the shuttle for cover. Marines keep spilling out of the barraks like a spigot. Just as I was about to retreat, my CC's PTA turrets focused in on the barraks, and soon turned it into rubble! Still, I'm badly injured, and I'm sure my marines are too, so we retreat into the shuttle and RTB. Then I look at my watch and it's 3am, and I have work in the morning. So I save the game and go to bed!
  6. Sounds like... Press and hold Enter-- lasers keep firing away. While still holding Enter, press another key-- lasers stop firing. Thats what it sounds like he's describing, but I don't experience this when I play the game.
  7. Open it up, inside there are usually some ribbon cables connecting various parts together. Cut them. Or, find the lazer, scratch the hell out of the lense. It'll work, but wont read.
  8. All I can say is "Ugh" I was really looking forward to GBS-III.
  9. Thanks, I shoulda tried those. I'll try this again sometime and see if I have better luck.
  10. Mebbie he just died... I'll have to check. I have to admit that the notion hadn't occurred to me. Dont think there was any reason for him to just kick the bucket-- unless he was really stupid and decided to open the sunroof in the shuttle or something.
  11. So I was out around Galcom HQ when I saw a Raider Vandal enter the region and HJ with Galcom HQ as his destination. Ooh, goodie, a raider with a death wish. I watch as he exits hyperspace and is immediatly pummeled by Galcom's defenses. Galcom's attack leaves behind a smoldering wreck of a fighter craft, but it's not gone kaboom yet. So I decide to collect the disabled raider and take him in to Galcom for some bonus creds. I'm kinda far away, and the disabled raider might blow up before my hulking slow Firestorm can even get half way there. So I send out a shuttle, piloted by a rather dim marine, to go tow the disabled craft. The shuttle gets to the heap and successfully tractors the craft. Now I order the shuttle to DELIVER it's catch to Galcom. Nothing. I order the shuttle to RTB. Nothing. I try telling it to FLY TO my CC. Nothing. Mebbie the marine fell asleep. *sigh* Guess I gotta do it myself. I get into a shuttle and fly over. I hop out, and get into the other shuttle that still has the disabled fighter tractored. I start flying to Galcom HQ, and before I get there, the damned thing blew up. So what happened? Why did the marine not follow my orders? He just froze and wouldn't respond to any command. After you have a shuttle TOW something, how do you make it stop towing? I must have missed something.
  12. Kamiwill: You're still doing your sig wrong. Register the game, add your system info, and then put a link to your system info page in your sig. Also, Alt+E is probably causing your game to crash, either because you dont have the newest patch, or you patched wrong, OR your video card does not have a vertex shader.
  13. I have winXP and when I try to use the picture viewer to open it I get unrecognized file format... !?
  14. How do I open the screenshots I take in UC? I just took a lot of them documenting all the stuff I did over the last hour of play. I'd even like to convert them to jpeg so I can share 'em on my website. UC is soooo coool. Flew my Firestorm over a raider base. Launched all 8 fighters, and they quickly took care of the air resistance. My ship's PTA system took down a lot of air defence. My marines and I swept in to take out the rest of the on the ground. Afterwards, I messed around a bit. Pretty damn cool how you can land a support craft on the landing bay on the firestorm. I landed my Starlance on there and took some shots just to show the amazing scale. (I modded my assets file so the Firestorm comes with an extra Starlance for my AE to use (I also know that if I plan to report any 'bugs' that I will revert back to my unmodified assets file and make sure I'm not screwing it up)) Then I drove my APC onto my Shuttle, then got in the shuttle and flew around with my APC still on top, hah! Then I had my shuttle hover up in the air, while I jumped out and jetpacked onto the shuttle and took some shots of me and my APC parked on top of my hovering shuttle. Ah, lots of fun. Wow, and I'm barely scratching the surface of this game.
  15. Oh c'mon guys, even I knew he was talking about the Firestorm! Geez.
  16. I just plopped in my new Radeon 9600 and everything works great now. No complaints from me!
  17. quote:Originally posted by Floyd Walker: (Raises hand) Add me to the list for this occurrence as well. I HAVE found out, however, that it will only CTD on me if I tinker with my AE's gear at the beginning of a "ROAM" game. Any CC, any race/caste, it doesn't seem to matter - it seems to work as it should... but try and change his gear to anything but the default (loadout package 1)at the start, UC will do a very quick & dirty CTD on me Floyd. My problem is a little different. It just crashes anytime FP view is attempted. Though, it could have something to do with my card not meeting the minimum requirements of the game
  18. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: quote:Originally posted by Chaoticmass: Must be my computer or something. I uninstalled UC, reinstalled it. Put the patch into the UC directory, then ran the patch and it said it patched OK. I ran the game, which showed the new version number on the bottom. I start a new roam game as an Assault Force Marine, default options. The game loads... gets up to the Game Loaded, Standby... then I catch a glimpse of FP view and then I get a CTD. Perhaps my video card doesn't like rendering the weapons, and forces the game to CTD at that point. I'm surprised the game loads at all, since your video card does not have a vertex shader. Aha, so thats it. Everything else in the game works fine! So I'll just enjoy the other aspects of the game until I can buy a new card this friday. I can even drive around the planet in ground units as long as I dont get out.

  20. Followup: I cant seem to do first person at all. I start a new game as an assault marine force (or whatev), go with all the default loadouts and settings. The game loads, when it is nearly done I hear the weapon cocking sound effect, and then CTD. I could not find this issue documented in the VCF, except for this: "FIXED: Crash resulting from items inventory not being initialized. This resulted in weapon modes containing incorrect clips counts for weapons with more than one mode (e.g. ZS10)" I've got the latest patch, so this problem shouldn't be causing me to crash. Perhaps I'll uninstall, reinstall, and patch all over again *shrugs*
  21. When is this problem planned to be patched? I just installed the uc10002_rc1 patch and the problem persists. What weapon loadout do I have to pick so I can go into FP mode without crashing? For me it seems to crash no matter what gun I try, though I have not tried all of them yet. I really wanted to fly down to earth and walk around some
  22. You can find BCMG pretty cheap now, I'd pick that one up too.
  23. hah, I had that one happen to me. Thought it was a bug, but then it never happened again. Good to know it's just me screwing up [ 02-10-2004, 09:02 PM: Message edited by: Chaoticmass ]
  24. So I finally got some free time to play my copy of UC without interruption. Though I still haven't played enough, I can tell you these things: - PTE-III is awsome! Cant wait until the patch so I can walk on it too. - The new WASD controls for the ship were weird at first, but now I like them. The way VTOL works now is much easier to use and more useful now. Also, it makes it feel more realistic now that I cant just press 0 and come to a screaming halt. - Space combat is much more fun! I never liked the space combat in BCMG very much, but now it's great. Seems like with the ships moving slower, I actually get to see 'em more. Dunno, it's just more fun. Also, when my friend and I went to go pick up the game, I talked so much about how cool BCMG was that my friend got a copy of UC for himself too
