Windows NT?

Has anyone tried to run v.2x on NT? Will it work? Is there something I can do to get it to work? I've tried everything they suggested in the troubleshooting FAQ, and nothing works.

The strange thing is that I can access the opening pages, including the main page. The problem is that once I move my mouse AT ALL, the game shuts down and takes me back to the desktop. I can press the associated letter (like "G" for the configuration page), and it will take me to that page, but when I try to move the mouse, it kicks me out again.

Is this a mouse problem? Is it a video card problem? My video card is an S3 (designator number 57), and I changed the bc3k.bat file to reflect the correct number, i.e., "/v57" but after I did that, I can't even open the main page at all anymore. Is there a solution, or will it just not work at all on an NT system?

Right. I know that, but there are a number of applications that work on my NT machine that don't specifically say that they do, i.e., CIV II, Privateer II, Outpost II, etc.

I was just holding out hope that someone may have tried to get it to work before with some success.

I don't think it would work, especially because of the sound drivers. It *may* work without sound but you would (I understand that you said you have it working on a WIN95 machine) have to disable the sound in the CONFIG on your WIN95 rig and then copy the SETUP.CFG file to the NT rig. Disable the intro as well and set it to keyboard for control (you can try joystick later). If that works, let me know.

Now THAT is an excellent suggestion. I will let you know. Mainly, I was just looking for ideas on what I should be concentrating on ... whether it was the mouse, the video card, or the sound.

I just completed every possible variation of sound card by editing hmiset.cfg in notepad (as per the help files), and nothing seems to work, although some combinations get me further than others.

Anyway, that's a great idea, and I'll let you know what happens.

I've more feedback for you.

Since BC3K is primarily a DOS program, you may be able to get the sound to work by using a program which allows DOS sound emulation under NT. You can find this file at

this URL. I would suggest that you disable MIDI music in the game and just concentrate on getting SOUNDBLASTER (or SBPRO) working.

I would be interested in knowing if it works.

Thanks for the extra feedback. The Hmiset does seem to work, because I can hear it when I test the sound, but the game still does not load.

I copied the setup.cfg file from my '95 pooter and replaced the one in the NT system, and when I hit the letter "G" from the main screen, I can see that all the sounds have been turned off. This alone, however, did not have any effect on the game, and it still dumped me back to the desktop when I moved the mouse.

Now, after reading all the documentation on this soundfx file you pointed me to, I am stumped once again. It directs me to create a PIF file and edit the properties. Now, I'm sure this seems simplistic to you, but what exactly is a PIF file, and how do you create one? Is it the same thing as a shortcut? I don't see any file in the Bc3000ad directory with a pif extension, and I don't know how to create one. If I can figure out how to, I think I can get it to work, because the sounfx readme file is very comprehensive and it basically says that it will work for any application.

A PIF File is a shortcut in the Startmenu on the taskbar or sometimes placed on the desktop to the Executable file.

If you have not got a shortcut to BC3K then go into the folder that you install bc3k in and locate the file bc3k.bat and right click on it and from the list of options select create shortcut and then locate the shortcut you just created in the folder and drag it to the desktop.

Once you have done that then right click the shortcut you have just moved to the desktop and select properties.

Adjust the properties as directed in the file.

If you require futher help then please do ask.

I know this is a fairly old thread but I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck in pulling this off yet.
