General BCM Demo Discussion

I think that the ramming thing, he was thinking Warf in Star Trek First Contact.

"Today is a good day to die"

Your ship is damaged beyond repair, no weapons left, you have engine thrust, take out the enemy too as your last hurrah!!

RAMMING SPEED!!!! yes, that would be cool,

AS A LAST RESORT!!! lol

Also, Commanders, we need to set Desylva up, he has been missed, and considering what he just said as far as his outdated computer system, we need to piece SOMETHING together that will allow the demo and BCM to work on his system. I realize that there is nothing we can do as far as his connection speed, but some of us must have some spare parts lying about somewhere, it's just a matter of putting them all together. I've got a 6gig W/D HD, and can probably pull a CPU, contact me via ICQ, and let's see what we can do for him!!!

LET'S GET DeSylva Something!!!

I have mixed feelings about radar ranges (as if that means anything), but I lean towards the SC's position.

My fear is that radar ranges as a fog of war element will turn BCM into, basically, a submarine game. Passive sonar, active pulses, find the enemy before (s)he finds me... that sort of thing. The basic sub game simulates long periods of inactivity with brief moments of panic -- not what you'd expect when the year is 3010, the technologies are interstellar, and the distances are measured in light-years (nee parsecs).

If you want stealth, use your cloak. Otherwise, scanning technology will find you. After all, the basic principle of travel is to not go faster than your headlights will let you see -- if you can travel fast, you should be able to see where you are going.

So, I can see you, but so what? Are you a threat? Don't know... yellow alert. Did you make an aggressive move? Red alert. Otherwise, stand down.

But then the question is... what is the plan for the active/passive radar option (the R toggle key)?

....it is a left-over from one of my harebrained ideas back in v1.0. The plan was to have it so that if you are in passive mode, you are not giving off an active ping. Which means that if you were BVR, (Beyond Visual Range) they can't see you, you can't see them (no blips in Tacscan). I am going to finish up that code though - I just keep forgeting.

The models look amazing!!!

Major improvement. I love the contrail effect for the missles! cwm39.gif

It really looks great.

Out of curiosity, is that effect going to be used on anything else, or by telling me, would you be in violation of the NDA?

(It's a really great effect!)

Hey! Has anyone tried BCStudio? It's cool. Yeah, I found it out when I was looking around the folder for the game, and I saw the exe, and thought "I wonder what that does?" and opened it.

You can view all the 3d models, rotate them, and see all the cool ships and things (black holes, and stuff), not in the demo!

It's in "C:Program Files3000ADBattlecruiser Millennium Demobcstudio.exe" or the folder where you installed the game.

Try it out peeps! cwm35.gif

Cmdr Nova,

you wanna see something cool? Try changing the textures to the models, e.g. put a starstation texture on the 3D marine models, or try the shuttle textures on the female commander. I had a blast! Unfortunately, I've been told that doing this will make the game unstable so remember to get everything back to their original settings when you're done. A wise idea is to make a backup of the folders before you start messing around with them.

Cool! lol, some of it is pretty funny (people with ship textures, starstations with jetpack textures).

One more cool thing to do is:

If you've got some mp3 files you'd rather hear than the regular ones, copy them to the soundfxmusic folder of your BCM demo folder, and then you can hear them by changing the in-game song # (alt-, or alt-.).

But I think you all would probably not, isn't that right? Just kidding, I'm not trying to be sarcastic; the music is pretty good, except the main title song feels out of place once you are in the game (i think that the main title theme should only be on the main title).

No, I will change those files to anything that suits me.

That I can almost agree with. But if it's a good piece of music why not include it in the general soundtrack?

well, the slow, 70's-80's funky sounding guitar is a bad thing to listen to while in the middle of a fast-paced battle with a starstation. Okay, considering that you can change the track, its okay (but you still have to stop what you are doing, and press the alt-. or , buttons on the keyboard, and then you could lose some time during something important).

just an opinion. remember that.

Hey Commanders,

yesterday I had a funny occurnce in the second mission:

I was attaking the station and it emmitted SOS. I hit ALT-d and in the same moment, the station blew up. From that point on, I was commanding the station! The icon in the lower right corner which represents the command craft had changed to a station icon und I changed my race/caste to terran/military. As beeing a station now, I was orbiting and couldn't move. Very funny cwm24.gif

BTW., the demo is very stable. After setting it to debug mode it never crashes and I always reach the end of the mission time (or I quit manually). Super job, SC cwm12.gif

hehe, you just became victim of a feature that is WIP. The ability to remain at a station, in real-time, when you dock. Right now, when you dock, the outside world is paused. At some point, this will change so that when you dock at a station, you are there and have access to the views etc. You can then either launch or login. If you are docked at the station when it goes boom!, its Game Over man. While docked at a station in real-time, you will have access to all its external views (just like in your ship) as well as Tacops. So, while you are there (maybe you are waiting for repairs to complet), you can still monitor Tacops and see if the station is under attack, as well as observe the traffic etc. Know whats cool about this? Say you are trading and then dock. But they don't have an item that you are waiting for. You could hang around until some traders or commercial vessels dock to resupply the station - and maybe they'd bring the items you are looking for. And since there are no limits, you can hang around at the station indefinitely - and if it comes under attack, you can borrow one of its fighters and join in the fray, while your CC is still docked there.

....and thats only the half of it. biggrin.gif

Frankly i like FOW but i can see your point. Games like 688i can get very boring if you can't find anything.

Guess that leaves enough in combination with passive/active radarmodes smile.gif Imagine a starstation having it's radar turned off or scanning intermittently (5 min off, 5 min on)

. You're flying around in a fighter with passive radar and then "enemy detected" at 100K. Uh oh smile.gif

Jaguar, your post really hit me right there. I appreciate your sentiments very much, and it's nice to think I've been missed amongst all of the other wonderful commanders you still have with you - Rattler, Pan, and the many, many others I had the pleasure of serving alongside during the days of BC3K. However, methinks the logistics would make your scheme virtually impossible - as I live in Australia, postage alone would render your plan more expensive than you might think. And I'd hate to accept charity when I have no real way of paying it back. So I must respectfully decline your offer, even though the sentiment of it is so very much appreciated.

Rest assured I will continue to monitor these boards, as I have done, and I will post when I have time.

RE: Radar ranging - I like the implementation you have described. It ties both the advanced nature of 3000ad scanning technologies in with some "commonsense" on the part of the AI - as has been said, in BC3K, if you sat two hostile forces in a region, even if they were on different planets/moons, they would simply attack each other until they died. This adds the option of much more advanced tactics and scenarios. Imagine having an Insurgent foothold in a region which already houses a GC starstation - building up GC forces...monitoring the Insurgent orbital station...wacthing them launch an attack force and arraying your own force until they breached your security perimeter...and then all out war...until they retreated once more to their own territory...and pushing the fight to them, watching them launch their defensive foprces when you breached their security perimeter...how COOL would that be.

I'm loving the screens I've seen so far, especially the ones that have just been posted at Gamespy. Believe it or not, this screenshot - http://www.gamespydaily.com/screenshots/index.asp?id=987

- actually reminds me a beach very close to where I grew up. And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is why this game is going to rock severely.

MORE! MORE! MORE! *grin* cwm4.gif

well still playing the demo smile.gif great fun

just one thing i noticed about the ai while on the first mission. I generally do almost all my work from inside tacops and let the AI handle attacking, etc. Anyway, blew up the attacking ship, and one of its fighters, and was taking on the last one. Coming in for the kill, it decided to fly behind the station, with no line of sight. But it didnt stop the BC firing at the ship, with no way of hitting it, and blasting away at the station with its main guns and missiles. wasnt an accidentaly clip, it was flying straight at the station blasting it. The Station having taken a battering from the attack went boom - mission failed. Its done this several times now.

Any chance of setting Line of sight so you won't pummel friendlies or key objects like the station?

Also one other thought i had. Any chance of setting your BC to be able to dock in tacops? you can fly the whole fleet from there, navigate to anything, but have to jump back to bridge to dock. would be nice to just click a menu to dock like everything else in there smile.gif

Line of sight is used. Its just that the station just happens to be in the line of sight and becomes the victim of friendly fire.

Good suggestion on the ability to dock from Tacops. In fact, it doesn't have to be in Tacops, it can just be added to the CC orders menu which is accessible from the bridge and Tacops. I will consider it.

Glad you're having fun.

Well Jamont, don't get too excited. I may still be lst in space - I'm no less busy with work, and I'm still reasonably incommunicado as far as net access is concerned.

I need to ask you a favour, ladies and gentlement. What I need are some screenshots of the Megaron class carrier, as well as shots of it's fighter complement - a Stafighter, a Defener, and a Zodiac, as well as a T3 Shuttle. As I can't install the demo (my system is pretty bad) I can't run BCStudio and see them myself. I also can't find the BCM Craft Specs file that's been talked about - my guess is that it's in the demo package as well.

Could some kind soul out there do me a huge favour by taking shots of the ships mentioned above, preferably from a few different angles, and copying the specs file, and ZIPPING them up, and sending them to [email protected]? I ask for them to be zipped because the server at work (where I'm checking my mail) doesn't allow us to d/l pic files, but it doesn't have a problem w/ zip files. Oh, feel free to include any other nice pics from the demo you have lying around...*grin*. As long as the zip file isn't too large...*lol*.

When someone has done this, could they please post a message here so I don't get 50 or so zip files? *laugh*

TIA, I look forward to seeing the demo some day...

Michael

Don't worry. I've got it. I know how to get backgrounds and I already have shots of the Megaron done; top-right, bottom-left, front-center, back, a shot of it going into hyperspace, and a shot of it going out of cloak mode. Will send file, via e-mail, with the fighters you ordered, and the shuttle 3 shots. Also, the craft specs file.

And, yes, these do look just like in the game (complete with backgrounds), even though it's in bcstudio. I know how to work around stuff like this, you should know.

Hmmm. SC, I've been thinking about how you can't save the IA missions. I think you should disable "Save Game" inside the ingame menu for IA. Either that, or just make the cancel button of the Save Game screen go back to ingame instead of the main menu.

I know this is easier said than done, but I think it would be a lot better when the game goes gold.
