Direct X8.1 final has been RELEASED!!! (6th November)and what an improvement.

I'm using a geforce 2 GTS Pro and up till now I was running under direct X8.0a.
Under X8.1 not only are the graphics crispier and more solid, but I now realize I have been missing out on the games nice little touches. For example I didn't know that when you hyper-jump your ship has a lovely particle effect around it and then it cloaks. Up till now I had none of that, I just had a static ship move from A to B. Another example, previously when I approached a navigation jumpgate, the gate would disappear in front of me and reappear behind. Now I sail through it. Excellent.

Well i'm off to see what else i've been missing out on. Take my advice update direct X to 8.1 now!!!!!!!!!

The E3 demo was built with the DX 8.1 SDK actually. As will the 1.0.01 patch.

DX 8.1 is a very good improvement over 8.0a and a must have.
