Multiplayer event ideas

Recommended Posts

This is a little known fact, but I can run any script I want on the server - similar to the single player script.

So, now that multiplayer is getting very close to being as stable (the biggest issue being sorted the synch issues on the planet) as single player, I want some ideas for mp events.

Basically, a planned event will be a dedicated script running on the server - and on top of the default server script. e.g. it could a script in which a group of hostile (scripted) ships are harrassing a station - and everyone on the server should logon (as same race, but choice of caste) and take on these hostiles. The script will auto resolve and reset when conditions are met. Thats just an example.

So, use this thread for submitting ideas for what a FUN and INTERESTING mp event would be. The servers can support up to 64 players (for bandwidth reasons I have them capped to 32), but if the turnout is more than 32, I will increase it.

Also, we would do this based on invites or sign-ups. e.g. if you don't sign up, you don't get the password to the event server etc.

Events also don't need to have any NPCs involved. e.g., it could just be an all out skirmish between two sides (e.g. TER/MIL vs TER/INS), or all players on one side (e.g. TER/MIL) engaging a single station which must be defended by the other side (e.g. TER/INS). etc

So, lets hear it. We can start something like this next week and plan one every weekend at day/times (e.g. Sat/Sun) which would enable everyone to participate.

Well, the NPC fleet battle will always be a popular event.A fleet of 10-15 NPCs versus half dozen or so real players meeting in a neutral system.Could restart when all the NPCs are gone or vice versa.Could add NPCs as the battle rages.

Actually, one of my favorite things to do is find players on planets using Tacops. Not quite sure how that would work in a script though.

Another possibility is having everyone in a fighter for some old fashion dog fighting.

Have to give it some more thought.

A scavenger hunt type event could be fun. Have a cargo pod containing a special item hidden on a planet, and see how many days it would take teams to find it.

Hmm, what kind of storyline could you put to that?

Maybe a badly damaged vessel sends out a mayday message requesting assistance in transporting a Karanian reactor, which is abruptly cut short before they could give their coordinates. Of course every explorer, raider, and treasurer-seeker in the galaxy intercepts this message. Galcom wants to recover the goods lost by it's trading vessel, both the Gammulan and Insurgent militaries want to capture this valuable item for further research and, of course the raiders want to turn a profit.

A good twist would be if a Commander who finally does find the item is destroyed before they can return it to their base; it is dropped in a cargo pod where the commander was destroyed.

Now that IS interesting.

My suggestion runs along those lines. The goal would be an Mzone or base that needed attacking/holding. Players would go in as ground pounding Marines, Tankers, fighter pilots, and ofcourse spacecraft support. Like BF1942 except...actually fun.

I mean hey this is Universal Combat right?

...yeah, once I get the remaining mp issues on the planet sorted out.

I was also thinking about that.A cargo pod,or randomly seed an object, something of value,in Sbases on planets.Would then require an 'OC' trip to the base and get it from inventory.

Someone awhile back suggested a scenario along the lines of a road rallye. Depending on how the scripting was done, the clues would either come to you in-game, one at a time, or all together in a PM just before logging on. Screen shots would confirm that a player hit every check-point ... or the Server could keep track if in graphics mode.

Like Blond_Knight suggested; it would very very cool if a massive assault force would be scripted. Each division with specific unique orders so in the big picture we all have a role in the battle going on.

Maybe even script consequences if specific divisions fail their goals.

If it were possible to do this, I'd certainly enjoy the scenario.

A Terran Cruiser has been seriously damaged, its engines are out and it's entered the atmosphere of an unknown location. A high-ranking officer is onboard and holds vital information regarding a Gamulan attack force.

Your mission should you choose to accept it:

Find, secure and rescue the ship. You have X minutes/hours to do it before a Gamulan force attacks.

-------------------

At the same time the players are looking for the ship to rescue it, the NPC Gamulans have the same idea and send a 'small' fleet to find it.

Whoever gets to it first and takes it back to their home station wins. If the Terran forces get it then they are awarded a note as to where the Gam forces are comming from and an additional 5 terran NPC ships to assist with the Gamulan force attack. The 5 ships are assigned to defend the station.

The Gamulan forces have a trick up their sleeves though... a large fleet (of 20+ super cruisers and carriers, the one this lost commander knows about) is also present. Somewhere.

The gam fleet is not moving between systems but will attack any and all units who enter its system to avoid the Gamulan location being discovered.

If the timer runs out, the gam's find the ship OR the terrans rescue the ship, the Gamulan force will move to Procon and attempt to destroy any/all units at the Terran home base.

It's kind of like a big treasure hunt/capture the flag with one big trap sitting out there and a grand finale.

It also gives players a lot of scope to pick what they do... scout for the Gamulan force and prepare for attack, attack the gamulan force or hunt for the ship to get your side a bonus before the big battle.

How about a planetary attack. The planet launches NPS crafts to stop the invasion, but has a limited amount of resources. This could make for fun space battles along with great land, sea, and air battles. Maybe a small moon base if the planet is too big...

What about a sort of escort-type event?

There could be two LRTs (can be player controlled or NPC) that need to be escorted across 2 or 3 sytems until the dock with their destination starstation.

The opposing side will need to destroy both of them. If at least one of the LRTs makes it to it's destination than the escort side gets a point. If the attackers destroy both, then they get a point.

This could be repeated 3 times per side and whichever side gets the most points wins.

Just a thought....

Lots of good ideas.

And another: A true Kobayashi Maru scenario.Of course,as usually,I'm not exactly sure on how to script it out,but in the Star Trek version a disabled freighter, the Kobayashi Maru, drifts into the Neutral Zone.

Well, the disabled freighter is no problem, but there is no Neutral Zone in the UC universe.I guess Gammulan space is the next best thing.

Well a fleet of ships is going to have to go into Gammulan space to rescue this freighter, and of course there is going to be opposition to that.

Should the Gammulans be NPC or real? Well this is MP so they should be real.Put the freighter in the middle of Gammulan space. The Gammulans job is to destroy the freighter and the rescue fleet. The rescue fleet has to fight off the Gammulans and tow the freighter to saftey.

Needless to say, not everyone is going to make it out alive.

Better take another look at that multiplayer galaxy map ... and the newly labeled jump gate for Galadran.

Err ...OK. Good point.

Yeah, the Gammulans could enter from Palean, and the oposing force enter through Rovarix.Put the freighter near Galadran.

A variation on the idea based on that of Shohasi and Scarlet. Think escort is cool too though.

Capture(tow) the Flag(ship)

Each time has an object in their region that should be towed by the other team to their won base.

Team A (terran) has a ship_A near the starstation of Team A and Team B (gammulan) has to tow ship_A

and deliver it to the starstation of Team B.

On a succesful delivery it gets a point(or wins) and visa versa or based on a timer, Has to be near their base (or in their region) for 1-5 minutes.

Same could be done on a planet. And if Team B has towed ship_A to their starstation and has towed ship_A_planet to their Starbase B then Team B wins.
