Opening strategies

Hi there,

Thanks to the BCM demo I've been inspired to try BC3000 again having been overly daunted by the interface. Now that I understand it better from the BCM demo I think I might know what I'm doing.

I've searched the boards for starting tips and read some useful posts, particularly on trading and read the manualand appendices. I was wondering if any of your vets could offer me advice on opening strategies in free mode. As I'm awful at fighting (I seem to get creamed son after launching)I'm looking for ways to ease myself gently into the game without serious combat, I guess as a trader until I can afford to upgrade.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or tips on how to get started. Trade, basic combat tips, good novice ways to use the interface etc.

I remember reading some time ago that there is a bug in the opening that means that for however long you remain docked at the station the AI stored up random events and hurld them all at you the instant you leave the station. Is this true? What would you recommend to minimise the impact?

Thanks in advance for your responses. I'm sure, given the scope of the game, there's going to be lots of things I haven't even realised are possible yet. Don't be afraid to patronise me with really basic tips!

God - I hope the game still runs following my hardware upgrades or I'm going to be crushed.

Thanks but I've done that already - no upgrading tips apart from two that are cheat/game exploitation types. Got a trading tip post that is good though.

As much as anything i'm interested in different approaches to getting started that befit my unskilled status. Tips on upgrading definitely fit that category.

thanks for replying

Steve

I too had problems starting out when I was a Green Commander. The first thing I did was to get out of Sol Space. Alpha Centauri was not as "busy", and I had time to learn the ropes, and hone my skills.

Hope this helps.

For early combat, what I do is enter a hostile area and stay by the jumpgate. In fact, you can order your BC to escort the jumpgate and it will just circle it and attack hostiles with the PTA's.

In BC3K, the hostile station will send out wave after wave of fighters, then the heavier ships. You can keep an eye on your shield level while your PTA's take out the fighters. You may have to manually take care of the heavier ships.

Once the station runs out of ships, you then close in on it. This is when it launches its missiles. The chicken way is to let the station launch its missiles and then fly to the jumpgate. Wait there until the missiles explode and then go back and do it again until the station runs out of missiles. Then you can wear down the stations shields and armor.

All this is much easier when you have upgraded your ship to the max.

Fastest way I found to afford upgrades is to use a shuttle to trade deflector arrays from Sol to Polaris. In about 30 minutes of trading, you'll have more cash then you can ever spend.

I put all my pilots in ATV's and set them on a moon in AI mode to build up their AI levels. That way they don't get killed and I don't have to keep buying new ICs.

I think this has already been dicussed somewhere though...

The GalCom Academy used to have a good tutorial on upgrading your ship and an introduction to mining. Unfortunately, I just went to the the site and the tutorial was listed, but unable to be accessed. Perhaps someone has a copy of it that they'd be willing to email you. I would, but I don't have a copy of it anymore.

The deadly game over combination :

1 - Cargo bay 2 destroyed

2 - Shuttle bay destroyed

Anyone knows how to get me out of this kind of situation?

The radiation even seem to get to the shuttles. and atv's. It takes 7 hours for cargo bay repair a GHQ, more than needed for a general radiation spread.

Purchase two rad control units. Throw everyone in the Medibay then dock and let the station repair your damaged cargo bay. Launch and clean up and radiation. Repeat for the shuttle bay.

I highly doubt that either is the source of your radiation problems. Check your reactor and related subsystems and also check your cargo for large quantities of radioactive minerals. Search the forums for a listing of minerals which can cause nasty radiation problems.

In playing BC3K V2.09, when you docked and got a station to do repairs on your ship, time elapsed equal to the time the repairs took. This only occurred when repairing at a station. If you weren't undergoing repairs, you could dock, leave the game running for two hours, and when you launched, time would not have elapsed in the game. Only when repairing would time elapsed.

This only became a problem when repairing during an ACM campaign. Most ACM missions have a time between them. When this time is reached by the game clock, the next mission activates. So if you docked your BC between missions and decided to do ten hours of repairs, in the middle of an ACM campaign, and then launched, the next ten hours worth of missions would trigger at once (because those ten hours had elapsed on the game clock.

The solution - don't dock for repairs in the middle of a campaign. Take parts and SysEngs and get them to do it for you. More fun, IMO.

Been a long while since I had to deal with that type of issue. The other alternative is to store them in a shuttle but you can't launch shuttles due to further damage.

Medibay? You sure that work?

It should do the trick. It won't prevent the crew from being exposed to the radiation but it should slow down the effects long enough for your cargo bay to be repaired. BTW, how did you manage to have both your cargo bay and shuttle bay destroyed?

Correction, don't dock for repairs AT ALL if playing ACM. Sometimes you need the lag time between missions to high tail it from point A to point B. If you take time to dock and repair, you lose that lag time.

Thanks for all the advice, it was just what I was looking for. It just whets my appetite for BCM. Went into the local GAME (part of EB) to ask about release dates and the exclusive deal and it was all news to them.

Sadly I couldn't get Bc3000 to run anymore, even after reinstalling. Only the hard-drive remains the same following the upgrading and the shop has done all sorts of stuff with drivers I'm going to have to unravel. I can't even run the sound setup, either in windows or DOS. I'll give it another bash over the weekend after scouring this site for tech info.

Starstation missiles. I made a mistake at pixan. But all I want out is the radiation, but I can't store rad control units cause it's cargo bay 2 destroyed. Even if I repairs my ship to 100, the radiation will stay. It's a deadlock situation. 7 hours of repairs...

Anyone knows if there was a version of BCM released in 1st april 2001?? I checked ard and found this site selling it. It stated BCM W98 or something like that and stated that it was out of stock. I dun think this is the same BCM that is being release by Ebgames, but if anyone got any info of this matter would really help me. Thank you.

If you actually followed Tyrn's advice, rather than typing up a load of nonsensical rubbish, and cluttering the thread, the problem would have been fixed by now.

....but no. That would be too easy now, won't it? So, lets continue repeating the same old garbage, so, several months from now, when someone else does a search and finds this thread, they'd find the same repetitive crap. Nice.

...and here's another bright one; who didn't think that actually posting the link in question, would be a good idea.

...no seriously though, it is inconsiderate. Tyrn and DeSylva, experience BC vets, post pretty much the same thing and here we are, several posts later, reading the same crap, when Episilon5 should should just go do it, and post the findings. Its ludicrous.

...btw, I am going to disable the ability to edit posts in UBB (except my admins and mods).
