Thomas Braun
I usually play Terran Military but decided this morning that I would try commercial. After a short time a noticed 2 other commercial ships set to Escort me. They never did anything, just followed me around wherever I went. Anybody know why they do this? Does anybody else wonder about some of the weird stuff the AI does?

Thomas Braun
Oh. . . I see, sorry. The SC will probably delete the thread then. But there's other stuff too that isn't documented. Like SC's flying circles around the CC after they've been ordered back to base. (I hope that's not in the VC too (I didn't see it)).
Guest Fox__Trot
Was your shuttle bay(s) damnged or did you have launch control off?
Thomas Braun
Nope everthing was fine. As soon as I started to move my CC they loaded up. Really strange. I also think a Storm Carrier has been following me around (can they cloak?) b/c sometimes my scanner picks up a red blip and I get just enough time to read "Storm Carrier" and then its gone. It happens all the time. In another situation I had a group of AI 20+ intruders (3) come straight for the bridge and go after my AE. Nothing else took damage. Just me. I thought that was weird too. Normally they try to steal stuff (or at least shoot back at the marines).
Bringram
The shuttles may have been marshalling, like real Naval Aviators do when aproaching, and lining up for a carrier landing. I noticed my fighters (all 8) doing the same thing. Maintain course and speed and they will all dock.
Thomas Braun
wow. That's pretty cool. Never really thought about it that way.

Wolferz
Commanders,Have you noticed how stupid your own crew is when you start out? A marine with an AI of 12 is only good for a couple of things....Cannon Fodder....and moving everything to one side in cargo bay 1, mopping the deck, then moving everything again and mopping the other side. You can usually include Resnig in this equation too. ROTFLMAOSo, we've all seen the antics of low AI. Did you expect any difference with the really smart cookies? IE: During beta testing, I was running a trade route between GalCom HQ and the Science Station out in Pluto orbit, in a SC. The CC was parked safely on the western coast of Africa with halt orders. (To prevent the low AI crew from trying something on their own..and they will)Everything is going swell for about six trips, trading Deflector Arrays, then I started hauling OTS weapons. I had just dropped out of hyperspace and started my approach to the Pluto jumpgate when three, count 'em, THREE Stormcarriers with the usual support compliment of heavy and light cruisers, decloaked off the port bow. Apparently they didn't care a great deal about me running guns to a science station that was sitting in a region with a jump anomaly to another system.I said: "Someone set us up the bomb." They didn't say: "You have no chance. Make your time."The fireball was Stu-pid-ness. The look on my face ----> My AI AI'nt up to snuff either. Space is a dangerous place. Expect the unexpected. If you're going too fast for them to catch up, they will maintain that profile until their dock parameters are met.Try this [*]Launch 2 fighters and 2 shuttles on SAD or similar [*]Have the fighters escort the shuttles [*]While near a station, HALT the CC and activate the A/P [*]ALT+E from your CC and then jetpack over to the top of the CC slightly above its center point [*]Activate Tacops and give the launched units RTB orders. Now watch from that fp view what they do. If you are accurately positioned, one of them might do a flyby over where you are hovering. In fact, if you can, give one of the shuttles the HALT order, then jetpack over to it and land ON it. Then give it the RTB order; or even PATROL, if you want to see what it feels like to be attached to a craft thats moving. You may fall off, depending on how fast the craft is going though. When I tried it, I was on my CC and it wasn't going very fast, so I stayed attached the whole time. Pretty weird I tell you.

Thomas Braun
In fact, only minutes ago my AE was killed after one level 30 Raider assualted the bridge and took out 3 level 15, 17, 18 marines. While this was happening, 3 of his buddies stole both the shuttles, not that it really mattered anyway. The AI in BCM is awesome!
Epsilon 5
I haven't wrote any war stories yet because the AI has been MUCH too easy for me... I never faced any challenge... each time I got damaged is when I did something stupid (activate AP for 2 seconds...)I guess the Sunflash doesn't provide as much fun.Never got attacked by a cloaked vessel either, but I often have static and "There's something out there" messages. hyndis
The AI is sadistic and evil. One time I was playing in a Sunflash (wanted to try out a light cruiser) and within just a few minutes of launching I was attacked by a swarm of fighters. Two other cruisers went after me as well.Six fighters + two cruisers = trouble!I took out two of the fighters and damaged one of the cruisers when they finally got the better of me. My hull was still at 74% but they took out the computers!! My ship was drifting helplessly with a leaky reactor with the engines stuck on max power...and the bow pointed right at Saturn!I took a few nice screens of those rings, complete with my ship on fire while heading right in. There was the ship, burning up in the atmosphere with those corrosive gases eating away at the damaged hull...
insecttoid3
{newbie question} um, how do you land on things in space {/newbie question}hehe ill just search around till i find it so no need to answer.[ 01-02-2002: Message edited by: insecttoid3 ]
Rico Jansen
Insectoid: That question doesn't belong in this thread. There's a nebwie forum for such questions. And if we don't need to answer, why ask?Or you might find this planet side hull walking thread interesting. It's basically the same other than gravity and jetpack controls. Thomas Braun
After I was playing for a while, I noticed that the Galaxy slowly becomes increasingly crowded. Is there some kind of "Lemming" AI, for example all hell breaking loose on the Credian - Gammulan border, or will new ships be generated until the point where it overwhelms my computer and I have to start over. Just curious especially since the manual describes at length how ships are created several jumps from where other certain ships are created. It sounds like this could start a domino type effect that would eventually overwhelm the Galaxy.
hyndis
Thats why you have to practice population control.Red dots are the predators. Blue dots are the prey, and green dots are in competition with red.If you see a red winning against a blue, let them win, then go in and get rid of the red. If you see a red fighting a green, help out if the green is losing. And if you see a red by itself, go after that nice cargo pod.Its all about the ecosystem. You gotta have balance or else things get all weird. If you dont keep their numbers in check, the ecosystem will be overwhelmed and bad things will happen. Also, you can give your pilots and marines some exercise, or else they'll get fat and lazy. hyndis
Yeah, but this was in a dinky little cruiser and I had only been playing the game for about an hour at that point. Still didn't know what half of the commands where.Still, pretty decent for a noob being ambushed.
