Sorry, I probably should have been a bit clearer. I meant that NPC ships were hyperspacing inside of planets and *dropping out of hyperspace* inside of the planets, and flying around inside of them.

If that's not a bug, either most planets are hollow of the NPC ships have some neat planet-tunneling technology I'd like installed on my CC.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its not possible because they use the same rules of planetfall as you do. If they end up inside the planetary sphere instead of entering it, it is due to the relaxed rules for NPCs. If you ever see this happen (it should be rare), I'd like a saved game of it. If an NPC intends to enter a planet, it will jump to it. NPCs never enter a planet accidentally unless they intend to. And if they accidentally enter the planetary sphere, they should immediately correct their position and exit it, since they know they are inside it. This happens if you are dogfighting near a planet, too close to a station etc.

This happened to me also when hyperspacing to a hostile. Caused me to planetfall to Jupiter, which proved to be a unhealthy thing for my CC. Stupid crushing violent Jovian atmosphere (or rather stupid me for not egressing right away) . If I see it again I'll get a save to you SC.

Still looking into my CTD problem from earlier.

After 10 hrs with no issues, I saved the game and quit the program. I then attempted to return to the game and received the following error after double clicking on the exe.

Any idea what that means?

New os (Windows 89SE, nvidia 23.11, via 4.37a)

Also, the game under 98 is not showing me the screen res of 1280 x 1024 - is that normal or does that give a clue that the drivers are having a problem being recognized correctly?

1. How the heck do you resume/restore a game by clicking on the EXE. Have you gone mad?

2. Config lists the resolutions that the card/driver reports that it can support.

I've made mental note, from now on not to toy with computers when drinking, lol

Ended up reformating, lol, prolly unnessary, ohh well

Alright, this issue is a gameplay issue. Whenever I set course to hyper to a station thats on another side of the planet from me, I fly straight through the planet. During combat, when I'm protecting a friendly station, I've actually hypered into the area where you start your descent into the planet's atmosphere several times. I'm getting really annoyed about this, cause its caused my exp to go to like negative 10000. Will someone please help me. Is this a bug, or hypering through planets part of the game.

I searched for hypering through planets and flying through planets, I'm sorry if this is a repeat.

Okay, so like, I installed the RC4 patch and, duh, I should have saved my game because my commander was gone, but like, okay, I can deal with that. So, I started a new game, and whoa...

I made, like, one jump to Jupiter and all of a sudden a friendly jumped right into the middle of Jupiter! And not only that, but a hostile followed. So, like, they are now dogfighting in the center of Jupiter!

After reading the exchange with Geldonyetich, I saved the game. Will it, like, help in any way?

Fortunately, my NPC controlled fighters and shuttles are able to fly around inside of planets in space mode just fine, so I'm able to reach those otherwise unattainable NPC ships. Just hang around next to a planetary body long enough (I recommend Earth) and this'll eventually happen - it seems alot of NPCs use the planet itself as a warp navigational beacon.

...and this is a bug because???

Sorry to say this Mr. Smart. BUT HOW IS THIS NOT A BUG????? I personally have had this same problem, they are going RIGHT into the planets, in the polygon, and enemies are killing friendly ships which has made my exp go to nil. Is this really how it was intended? It makes no sense to me, its not that they are hypering through planets, they are actually hypering into planets and literally fighting inside the planetary boundry.

Oops my bad, I didn't see that there was another post concerning it. Listen SC if you want I'll be glad to send you a save of it if Geldonyetich hasn't yet, It ALWAYS happens to me, like at least once every time I play the game. I hope you get this fixed soon, my exp just went down another -350 tonight from this.

Still CTDS, seems after I get toasted, runs an hour , than after being destroyed because of something stupid on my part, try to restore from saved, it seems to ctd at hyperspace jump point

Gonna download DX 8.1, thought I read XP came with 8.1, dunno, they've moved the folder from program files

EDIT , It say's XP, comes with DX8.1, confirmed

Anyone think the TNT2 card is problem?

I have 21.83 nvidia drivers loaded, these are whats said to be corrrect drivers for card

I've had this video card for about 2 years

I read that XP likes 64 bit video, the TNT2 is unable to support this

Time for new video card? Its the DX8.1, thats having trouble with TNT2 card

CTD's and invalid/corrupted RESUME files

So far the following people have reported very similar problems within this thread

Geldonyetich - WinXP

Exazoid - Win2K

Snark - WinXP

Nimbus - Win2K

Church - Win2K

Thor Dazen - WinXP

Guardian452 - Win2K

Problems reported

Persistant CTD's after a playin a while

Freezes

Invalid/corrupt RESUME saves

I examined all these guys hardware profiles to see if there was any hardware similarities, but XP/2K is the only constant.

I was on the threshhold of sending in my save file where I would CTD every time within minutes after loading, but I accidently and foolishly deleted the game ( tried delete one of the 9 saves within a profile in game...but *poof* the entire profile did go).

And I too have experienced the invalid/corrupt save occassionally, also only when trying to RESUME (not RESTORE). I've got a strong feeling these problems will manifest themselves again with my current game, and this time I'll be sure to submit the saves.

SC, I know you have a great love of wild goose chases, and this/these post(s) isnt evidence enough for you to look into it. But I think users of 2K/XP should be aware of this....maybe it will help pinpoint a problem if there is one.

Thanks

Sorry about that, seriously, I don't really want to get banned. I love this game, its actually stopped me from playing Everquest. If thats not a feat, then I don't know what is. Anyhow, I tried again last night to get the problem to happen again, I was unlucky. Heh, funny that when I look for it it doesn't happen, yet when I don't look for it happens.

Oh yeah....I get it alright. Consoles 1 - PC's of varying types 0

I posted the message more as a heads up to 2K/XP users who hadnt noticed similar problems from other 2K/XP users.

BTW SC.....what installs of 2K/XP are you using? Pro? And what service packs?

Thanks again. And remember...I'm just trying to help in whatever roundabout way.

The game was developed exclusively under win2K due the stability of that OS. Which is why it works similarly under winXP. Driver issues are the #1 problems under both of those OSes.

In fact, there were about 10 emails to the support address (which got forwarded to me) in which some guy was really pissed that the game worked under win98SE with his Voodoo3 and didn't work under win2K. No amount of telling him that V3 drivers are not DX8 compliant, would appease him. So, I had to take over the issue and explain to him what the problem was. In the end I told him that he should either get a next-gen video card or install a dual-boot system and run the game as before.

The reason why MOST devs do NOT post on boards, nor discuss game issues, is for the same reason I get short around here : most people just DON'T GET IT. There are a LOT of issues which can cause a game to behave unexpectedly and they don't necessarily point to a bug in the game. We've seen this here time and time again. Bugs in the game which can be reproduced reliably, are reproduced and fixed immediately. We don't sit on bugs around here.

I spend a great deal of time researching issues, compiling helpful tips and hints for the FAQ, discussing with the beta testers etc. The end result is that if I can't reproduce a bug, I can't fix it.

I mean, I've seen people swear up and down and on a stack of donuts that they are running DirectX 8.1. And on inspection of their DXDIAG readout, I find otherwise. What do I get for my troubles?

"uhm, doh!"

"er, sorry, I could'a sworn it was DirectX 8.1"

"hmmm, my other games work!"

And most gamers just don't understand that VERY FEW games released in 2000-01, used the DX8 SDK. So, when they say "....well it works with my other games", they have a clue what they're talking about.

Most of these recent games were in development for quite sometime and switching from the DX7 SDK to DX8 is not a wise thing to do. I did it anyway because I wanted to get it over with. Which is why the first demo used DX7 and the second one used DX8 and BCM used DX8.1.

Even if these games were compiled to run under DX8 runtime are using backward compatibility with DX7 (which is still in DX8 btw) and do not require any DX8 features. Yet. BCM uses a lot of native DX8 features and will use more in the coming XP add-ons (vertex and pixel shaders etc)

Drivers and a lot of hardware compatibility issues, lead to stability issues and other random issues. You've already read these threads and seen how people seemingly solve their problems by re-installing their OS etc. BCM does not replace nor do ANYTHING with system files, so its not responsible for that. If you botch your driver install, use buggy drivers, built your own system with a potpouri of parts and accessories that seemingly care not for each other, you end up with a nightmare.

I do NOT have ANY interest in troubleshooting nor researching manufacturer driver problems because short of reporting them (something a gamer do himself), I can't do ANYTHING about them.

I run win2K and winXP will all updated service packs.

SC, would it be helpfull,

If I zipped up and sent you a saved game?

The restore from this seems to work, but persistant CTD's after this

The CTD's started, after I was destroyed, alt Q, just before actually vaporizing and than restored to a earlier point, everything was great till this point, BCM ran for over a hour and half at least without a CTD

No. It is useless to me unless it is something that can be reliably reproduced.

Is it me or are ATV's amphibious?

in IA10 you can drive your atv in the water and not have a problem - there also half way in and out of the ocean floor. I got screenshots to prove it if you want.

Just tried the space force marine IA scenario. Are you supposed to launch from a station in a PAS?

Also, the Add waypoint button in TACOPS seems to be disabled when observing a planet. Was working fine in 1.0.03

#2 What was I thinking? I’ve used TACOPS properly for ages and then suddenly I do that! Note to self: never, EVER post about something you ‘found’ while you were half-asleep. That’s when bad things happen

as for #1, I have a screenshot of a PAS type 1 in space (using BCIA0010) (can’t give you a savegame, since it’s in IA) at http://zwycky.webpark.cz/PAS_in_space.jpg if that makes any difference.
