I was in the Pluto region on my way to blockade New America. I get into a fight with an Aestrom. As I polish it off, a Mk-3 decloaks near me and attacks me. I manage to disable it, and get it under tow. During the fight, Gazer-1 had been destroyed, so I was heading back to Galcom HQ. After jumping into Earth space, I switched to external view to get a closer look at the new Mk-3 paint job. Just as I get it into view, I notice energy arcing over the hull. I shake my head in disbelief as the ship, still in the tractor beam, cloaks! I'm laughing my ass off, since I've still got it in the tractor. I got a screenshot, which I'll post later, of me tractoring nothing. I wondered how long he'd stay cloaked before he gave it up. I switched back to forward view to check the jump engines, and when I switched back to external, the tractor beam had disengaged. Sure enough, with no target to lock onto, the tractor had lost its lock on the Mk3, and I was sitting with shields down with a hostile carrier in my immediate vicinity. I had no choice but to raise my shields and hope he'd attack again. He never did though. I got a Mk1 as a consolation prize, but the wily cap'n (I can't think of it as an AI when it pulled that off) of the Mk-3 escaped capture not two minutes from Galcom HQ, and got away absolutely clean.

Cadets, note the usefulness of cloaking devices as a defensive weapon.

* Taking Notes

Actually one of the funnest games I had was playing as a shuttle pilot and chasing down Stormcarriers and Battlecruisers, kidnapping them and taking them to their enemies stations.

Ok, here's a fun little experience. Got out on a planet and told a shuttle piloted by a marine to land near me. I walked up to the shuttle, zoomed in with my rifle, and shot the cockpit about 15 times. I get in the shuttle and the marine is dead. Heh, heh, heh. That was fun. Talk about good damage detection.

That's interesting.

I hate it when I'm flying "reconnassaince" over an enemy base and a friendly SAM knocks out my engine. It's fun to careen towards the ground while having no control.

Patrols End. (a short war story)

Returning from a long patrol with my BC Venture a bit beat up, my crew dead beat, looking forward to R&R on Galcom, we exit the jump point into earth region ready to make the last hyperspace home. Yeah, I had heard the radine depleted warning as we crossed Jupiter space but felt sure we would make it back, just one more jump then home.

As we configured the ship ready for hyperspace the dreaded sound of reactor and engine shutdown was heard all over the ship. Systems malfunction flashed up on all screens, - life support, tactical, weapons, communications everything was offline including the all important launch control. Venture was dead in the water, and if hostiles showed up probably dead full stop.

After a brief senior officers meeting on the bridge a plan was formulated, we would attempt to align the solar reactor to give enough power for - life support, aux life support and launch control and any other power would be shared between other vital systems. Not wishing to suffer the ignomy of arriving at Galcom being towed by a shuttle and in view of the time that would take, the plan called for me the ships commander with a small marine escort to Shuttle over to Galcom and purchase the needed radine, get back to the Venture and unload the precious mineral.

On paper the plan looked good;-

1) we are in friendly space.

2) if we could get launch control on, a couple of FCs could fly CAP whilst I was away.

3) the shuttle is fast - the trip would not take long.

All appeared to go well- the solar reactor provided power enough - just - for the needed systems and of course launch control. I got to shuttle bay 1 and launched from the HUD TLM, Galcom here I come. Venture floated peacefully many klicks behind me. We made it, got the radine aboard and hyperspaced back out to Venture. As we saw the range to our ship come down the tension in the craft was palpable, what if we now have a shipload of intruders waiting for us? What if a cloaked enemy is at this moment arriving at the scene of our almost helpless mothercraft. Perhaps preparing a tractor lock to drag it away!! What if the solar reactor had become misaligned and life support had failed again. What if there had been a mutiny .............

Venture hoved into sight, -- all seemed normal, no enemy space marines crawling over the hull, no enemy Firestorm off the port bow with a tractor lock on. Very quiet - a bit too quiet perhaps?

OK lets dock and get the show on the road again I say. so - Alt/D - no go shuttle wont dock, try again edging closer to the ship Alt/D - no dock just silence tried / still no dock. So here we are a bunch of rednecks with a even redder faced Commander not able to get back aboard his OWN SHIP. This was not part of the plan.

My mind briefly toyed again with idea of a mutiny, that b*****d Resnig, he never did do what I told him - ever, even in my last command he was always countermanding my orders.

Thats it - get me suited - I am going in via the airlock, I will find out wtf is going on here.

CTRL/E finds me jetpacking towards my ship, realising that I was now a sitting duck, if Resnig ever did want my job now was sure his chance to get it.

My worst fears seemed to be justified as I jetpacked past the starboard viewscreen on my way to the airlock, I was sure I could make out a crewmember lying on the floor waving two fingers in the air at me - just let me get in there!

In we go / - up to the bridge. No problems, whats going on then, still malfunction readouts on all the screens - check power allocations Ahhhh. Something OR Someone has turned off all the power allocations I made prior to leaving the ship including LAUNCH CONTROL, that why I could not dock the shuttle. I noted many of my crew were now suffering the effects of Life Support being offline, apparently the sys eng who made a rude sign was telling me they had only two minutes air left on the ship. Who did this I wonder? Has the SC put a sabotage agent amongst the crew. Looking at the perscan I do notice two particular flight engineers have not suffered as much as the others from the period without life support their FF and LF are still high, mmmmm interesting. I will keep an eye on them.

Anyway - launch control enabled via solar reactor power > shuttle docked > radine unloaded > Galcom here we come.

And this was what happened at the END of a combat patrol, on the way home a brief glimpse at what the world of BCM is about - nothing else even comes close!

Thanks SC for making this possible for us.

That was BRILLIANT!!

See, this is the kind of thing I'm talking about. You couldn't dock your shuttle with the command craft. So you exited the shuttle, flew in space and entered the command craft via an airlock (which is why the / key worked).

Don't you just luv this game?

btw, as for what you describe about wanting to see inside your ship from space....if my technologies go as planned, you can expect to do just that in BCTC due out later in 2003 due to use of portal based technologies. In fact, I'll probably enable the ability to smash in airlock windows if the airlock won't open. Since those areas would be marked as presurised, breaking the window won't have any effect on the ship....unless of course someone is in the airlock area (where they shouldn't be, to begin with).

Really? Your going to do that in BCTC? LONG LIVE THE SC! LONG LIVE BC! LONG LIVE DEREK SMART! That's going to be so cool, it's not even funny. Normally i'd think it's a bunch of hype if a company claimed to have cool features like that in a game, but BCM delivered, no reason why BCTC wouldn't. Come on technologies...go as planned...work....do it for Dread.....(shoots an engineer through the head) "WORK!!!!""

I was patrolling around the Earthstar Starstation, in my Nightstar Heavy Carrier, when a Val/Raider Solnar Heavy Cruiser comes in. I figure let's go take it out. After a few minutes of action and with the help of a couple of fighters from Earthstar its History. Well just as this finishes a BC MKII raider

HJ into the region also. I launch all 4 fighters and the MKII launched fighters and again with the help of some fighters from Earthstar, we sent the raider to its death. My fighter jocks, interesting enough took out all 4 of his fighters. Not bad, 1st combat mission, and 4 kills.

I thought enough of this, and HJ over to Polaris Star system. I was enroute to Polaris-2 when the TAC Officer said, "There's something out there"!

Then I saw the flash across my screen which told me I had a cloaked Carrier out there.

Well I was just done from rearming and recharging the fighters up to full capacity when I was alerted, "We have intruders on board"!

Knowing that my Combat Officer is a goober, I checked the Perscan and found 6 intruders. Before I could do anything, I hear Mid-turret Laser array is damaged.

Still no ship had decloaked, therefore the intruders are taking out systems. As that happens a Val/Raider BC MKIII decloaks. Surley enough its target was me. Next I hear marines engaged in combat on Deck 2 and 3. Well I said enough of this!

Changed direction to Velari Starstation. Sent 10 marines out searching for the intruders, and before I could launch fighters, Mid-turret laser is destroyed.

Well by this time the MKII was upon me with her fighters also.

Well better launch all fighters, when to my surprise no fighters could be launched.

It seems the intruders made it to the flight deck!

All 4 fighters had 10 to 20 percent damage, 1 Fpilot was dead and the other 3 were injured.

Well I cut launch power quickly seeing this and said it don't look good.

No fighter protection, intruders running amok on the ship, and a MKIII coming in for the kill.

Well at this point in the nick of time I was close enough to Velari starstation to be under there protection. I took some laser and missile damage and was able to dock with Velari.

This put the 6 intruders in the brig, but cost me 3 marines and alot of internal damage. I took a look at the damage, bought the spare parts and quickly took off again.

I put the engineers to work and stayed within the area of Velari startstion. Thank god we beat back the MKIII and its fighters, but at what cost:

1.) I had 1 operational fighter and 2 shuttles.

2.) 5 pilots were either wounded or dead.

3.) 3 marines killed in action.

4.) Mid-turret PTA destroyed.

5.) Other internal and external structural damage.

6.) Velari starstion, shields at 1000 and armor had lost 1000 points.

I thought, well I am too banged up to go anywhere, might as well stay here and protect the Starstion and repair my self.

After a few hours, I have all shuttles and 2 fighters operational. Mid-turret laser is functional also. Internal damage and systems coming back online, and 1 pilot cloned and 3 pilots coming out of medbay.

The ship is somewhat operational and Velari is about 6000 shields so I decided to HJ over to Actis-IV in Procyon system

And it started all over again, "There's something out there"! This time a Raider Firestorm decloaks.

In closing, this is one hell of a game, and the AI is something to be reckoned with!

If I didn't know any better, I think the SC was actually the raider AI!

Had my first experience of deploying marines in anger.

I located the enemy base, and teleported my 10 MI marines to the surface a short distance from the perimeter. So far so good, 10 marines on the ground.

Having not much clue on how to use marines on the ground, I decided that I would set them up with 10 escorting 9 escorting 8 escorting 7 etc...... then I gave Marine 1 an order to destroy the Command and Control building in the middle of the base. Seemed like a likely target.

Next came one of those things that makes BCM so cool. My ten marines running across the landscape in single file, heading for the enemy base. When they crossed the perimeter, the local grunts started appearing. The marines given the escort orders started to fan out and engage the enemy, while marine 1 doggedly ran towards his target.

All of a sudden, I see tracer cutting across where he has just been, and closing in on him. Fearing for my "sergeant", I zoom in on his attacker, but my marines are way ahead of me, as I see two lines of rifle fire cut him down where he stands.

By this time I am worried that my marines may be outnumbered, as the enemy has more marines, and some of them have EF designation. But zooming out, I realise that a lot of the base is grey, and that my fantastic troops have taken out some of the air defences. So I send in the fighters to provide cover. I give all four fighters orders to attack individual enemy soliders, since I want to be sure of the kill. They seem to take an age arriving, and I curse that I did not deploy them in readiness.

Five marines down, and the fighters arrive. Those boys must have been glad to see the air support coming in. With so SAMs to protect the base, the fighters run riot, strafing enemy marines, destroying enemy buildings, and clearing the area around my boys. Run riot, that is, until the local flyboys turn up. Luckily my pilots seems to have been blessed with superb AI today, as they take down two of the enemy fighters with ease, leaving just some P21 Vandals to buzz them but cause no problems.

I beam up my marines, then order the fighters to return to the carrier. The enemy base is a total mess, and I'm sure my CO would be pleased with the result.

I watched the whole thing through Tacops, and I just can't believe how cool this game is. It just gets better and better.

I wish I had some screenshots to show you, but frankly, I had my jaw on the floor the whole time, and the adrenaline that was pumping (especially waiting for the air support to turn up) meant that I was too engrossed in the game's experience to take them. Awesome!

I did something similiar. My bridge viewer was totally damaged. Malfunctions across the board. Luckily I was close enough to the station to fly to it. I targeted it with / and was able to dock.

Not as creative as Brandon's situation but I thought it was neat.

...now just think: MULTIPLAYER

And just wait until the NPC's SA (Situation Awareness) is beefed up and they start to make use of dropped/switched weapons, DJPs, supply stations etc (in some pre-mp patch update coming soon), then you'll see.

Battle of Pixan

Simple i thought take a giant fleet and hit gamm territory, started in high earth orbit, and collected some supplies from Galcom

Supplies: 2 bcmk3 a mk2, a mk1, and every cruiser they had plus five vandals, and a generis transport

made our way to lennen where i robbed WRATIH starstaion lol, yes robbed them... of two meg's and two nightstar's, every cruiser they had, two shuttles, and some fighters

made the jump to pixan and hit the starstation.

Somehow in the midst of it i took a lot of damage to my ship and lost a fighter so i lose fleet C&C?

then a ctd right before my ship was destroyed

SOME NOTES: giant fleet battles slow your processor way the hell down , i have not tried bcm on p4 yet i will tommorow. i wonder what types of things xp1 will have to help with fleet c&c

There are 4 characters I play the most as...

Commander Roger Wilco

So far, after spending days in the Earth region getting insanely rich, took his BCMk3(the GCVEureka) out to Sygan and captured his first station...only to lose all his pilots to a fershlugginer ODS

Here's an excerpt from Rog's personal log...

I can still hear the Supreme Commander yelling in my face back at the academy...

WILCO! Mop up that floor, the Credian ambassador is due any minute!

Wilco! That simulator is for OMEGA Testers ONLY!

WILCO! If you send me your security code one more time, I'll see you out an airlock! Without a suit! You friggin' idiot!

But, through some stroke of luck, I graduated from GalCom academy!

Although, I still wonder if a rat climbed into the main grading computer...

What wonders await us in the bosom of the cosmos? All we do know is, we will boldy CLEAN where

no man has cleaned before!

His story may be published in the next issue of "Space Piston"

Private Max K0rn, EF Marine

A marine with attitude. So far, I've been using enemy supply stations and destroying every single building. I've seen some wierd stuff with this AE. Using the jet pack to get on buildings, I noticed NPCs will just camp you at the bottom, instead of running around randomly. Very cool

Ensign Rick Hunter, EF Pilot

This character has died a total of 3 times...I guess the pilot career is not my forte.

First, I died just after take-off. NEVER go into Tac-Ops with the Autopilot OFF, kids.

After the med-techs brought him back(aka, I deleted and SNG ), he flew an X-22 Aurora, and flew all the way to the planet Obsidia. Thinking he could salvage that probe on his own was a BAD idea...first the hull was damaged, so he landed and climbed out of the ship. NOT a good idea, kids. A Vacc suit doesn't protect against a hostile atmosphere.

Journalist Cid Maxim

As a journalist for Space Piston, Cid has been able to get places Rog and Rick have never dreamed of going. Ironicly, this was not only the most boring scenario I've played, but also the safest.

Here's a short one for the lot of you!

I had spent several hours yesterday running the route from Galcom to Wraith selling iridium and making a nice profit, I must say, in my Battlecruiser Mk1.

It was late last night (early this morning), when I was feeling like it was time to hit the sack. So, I figured, I'm gonna do one last jump into Jupiter's Region 4 where it was relatively safe and park there. I figured I'd let my computer run the rest of the night and check on my status in the morning when I woke up. At that time, I was getting the nagging feeling that I was forgetting something. However, being that I was tired, that was more important than figuring out what I was forgetting. I switched off the monitor and speakers and off to bed I went.

This morning, I awoke, showered, and headed down to my computer. I switched on the speakers and heard my crew jabbering in the backgroud. Good, I thought to myself, my ship is still in one piece after running the entire night. I then clicked on my monitor and to my amazement I had the word MALFUNCTION at the top of my bridge view.

I immediately went to Logistics to check out my power settings. There, to my horror, I saw that my Radine was at 0...and a lot of my subsystem power settings were at 0. Thankfully, life support was still working.

So, I thought to myself, that was a close one...but my crew is still alive and my ship is undamaged save for the deficit in Radine. Ok, I figured, I'll rotate the ship a bit to get more power from my solars, and see if I can get launch control online. I did just that and launch control was working.

I then decided I'd take my AE, board an available shuttle and head over to Jupiter's Earthstar station and get enough Radine to get my CC operational. Once I got enough Radine to my CC, I'd dock my shuttle, go back to the bridge, and set course to Earthstar for a full refueling. A full-proof plan, or so I thought.

I launched my shuttle and headed for the jumpgate that would take me to Jupiter. Just as I came out of hyperspace and was closing on the gate, my whole computer shut off. I mean everything, my monitor, my speakers, everything! ****, I thought and as soon as I looked under my desk at my powerstrip, I became even more ticked. There under my desk, I saw the family cat near the powerstrip washing himself. It was then that I realized that the damned cat had walked over the powerstrip and shut it off.

Moral of the war story:

(1) Even Vets make mistakes..and when you get a nagging feeling that you are forgetting something, think about it and don't worry about the sleep. You have an obligation to your ship's crew..their safety. IOW, make sure you have a lot of Radine before you park for the night.

(2) And, make sure your powerstrip is "cat-proofed!"

ok heres a story:

i was traiding back and forth between galcomHQ and genesis station (im to scared to leave earth space ) in my garid cruiser. i had already earned enough to upgrade my engines, sheilds, and hull to the top upgrade and i was halfway there to getting my reactor upgrade. i was en-route to genesis when the alarm klaxon sounded and i saw there was an insurgent battlecruiser comming towards genesis from the other side. i came out of hyperspace and flew through the beams of genesis (i always get a strange urge to perform fancy manuvers through the parts of stations). and ended up on the otherside of genesis as the enemy came out of hyperspace. after a brief skermish, i killed it of and then let my PTA system shoot at fighters while i turned on power to launch control and launched a shuttle to pick up the cargo pod. the shuttle returned safely and i turned off the launch power again and went to see what i got. a shuttle hud, a tools, and something iilegal. i ejected the illegal item and chased after a few fighters (now that i think about it there were too many fighters), i dissabled a few and dropped them off at genesis for money. after a while when i glanced down to see something and i noticed something that i should have seen before.

TER/MIL

im guessing i accidentaly shot the station durring my fight because it had been launching fighters to attack me for a while now. the fighters were designated as enemies but the station still said friendly, and i was getting monney for shooting down its own fighters and bringing them back. each time i shot one down or dropped a dissabled one back at the station, another would launch, keeping a total of 3 out all the time. after a while i got bored with it and decided to head back to galcomHQ. while in hyperspace, i discovered that 3 ships were waiting at my exet point. 2 fighters and a Mk1 shuttle. all were TER/MIL and all were desegnated as hostiles and were set to attack me (dont ask me why the shutle was trying to attack, i dont know). i came out of hyperspace and had my PTA system deal with them, but, same as with genesis, they kept gettign replaced. i was getting sick of it by that time so i thought "Screw this" and parked mysef in one of the struts of galcom.

then i opened fire rcain.gifrcain.gif

between my sustaned fire, and the fire/missiles of the fighters who were shootimg at me and hitting the strut iwas between, GalcomHQ died pretty quickly. i dont think i got any Exp. points and i didnt check, but it was pretty funny.

That story brings up one memory, from my lurking days.... A little dilemma with one quote from an old GalCom document, created back when even I was around.....

quote:

The Rules of Engagement are clear against Insurgency targets, and this applies to one of our own as well. Terminate with extreme prejudice.

Guess the AI hasn't learned the new Rules of Engagement yet.....

Some RP-based topics of interest would be here, and Here.

I think my Chief Medical Officer and Tactical Officer are having an affair!

My crew fatigue is at 2%, but those two are at 55% and the CMO is asking to be relieved. I sent them to their room(s?).

We'll get to the bottom of it once I get the Chief Engineer to install one of those X10 cameras in the Officers Quarters.

LMAO!!! Steve that was hilarious!!

Anyway, there are one or two stories over at the BC Commanders Forum (you know, that other forum where anything goes )
