Kicked Out of Game with RC4

Recommended Posts

I have been playing roam modes in all previous

RC versions 1 and 3. Since RC4 was posted today

I just installed it.

I have had NO crashes in prior RC1, 3. All seemed very very stable. I just got kicked out of UC to the desktop after playing roam mode for only a 5-10 minutes, so I figured i would just let you know in case you start see it reported more.

I am going to reboot, make sure system is running clean. Normally I would not post this, but only because I have been running for Hours rock steady on previous versions.

I was roaming as Elite Pilot, in Earth 1 region, and using my escort ships as target practice so i could experiment more with the keyboard controls and using a joystick.

If no one else posts any issues post RC4 then just delete my thread. Maybe it is just a fluke.

(or bad kharma for shooting my own guys)

I will try again and let you know if the problem persists.

When I post to TS, if is often moved by the SC until it is verified, so I put it here first, and wait for SC to decide to move it.

There is not much detail to give except that I had just started a game in Roam, in Earth, Race/Caste was Terran/Military.

I was flying a raven. There were no error messages, just a total dump to the desktop.

Like I said, I have never had any stability issues, I see others report from time to time, but I felt that all was rock steady with hours of play under RC3 especially.

My system specs are out there in my profile.

If no one else reports issues of this, I expect it to be an anomaly.

I re-played last night for about 30mins with no issue, so I started this as a collection place of reports. If no one else reports in in a few days with a similar change I fully expect this thread to get the "dump" as well.

You're right, leave it here because I would certainly have deleted it if i saw it in the tech support forum. I don't go on wild geese chases and I don't try to fix anything I can't reproduce. Since nobody has this problem with RC4 - and I certainly don't - you're on your own. If you feel its RC4, then reinstall, apply RC1 and stick with it. Or apply the RC3 on top of it if you are so inclined.

RC4 saved games are backwards compatible with RC3

I don't give up that easy. I like the improvements I am seeing in RC4, escorts are great, especially when I'm not using them for target practice. I'm inclined with it being a fluke so far. Perhaps we'll see that as more folks get the RC4 they too will have no issues.

I'll save a bit more often, and run an extensive defrag, etc as suggested in troubleshooting for these things.

One question: when I had RC3, I unzipped all the files and moved the original zip to a safe folder. If the RC4 updates the ZIP file, and now I have the ZIP and unzipped in the same folder, can this lead to a "mix" of versions issue? ie: that will contribute to a crash? Which does BC regard as the source suring the game?

I think I'll completely uninstall, delete all folders, reinstall, and apply upto RC4.

If this is the reason for the issue I experienced then maybe my error will serve as a heads up for anyone who unzipped all the gfx, sounds, etc... and what to do when updates come out.

Thanks.

It shouldn't conflict when you ovveride the files. SC only releases the files he fixes. Just overrite and your fixed.

But now the odd thing is, Im having the same problem. Mine just randomly CTD all the time (RC-1 to RC-4). I always run clean. I have noticed a pattern to these things though..... It only happens when I click on stuff, go to the different computers, use team orders menu, and other stuff that fall in that area. Sometimes I get weird gfx glitches too. EX: Sometimes ships will be invisible (no not cloaked) with no collision detection (sometimes), I see this massive looking PTA looking beam fill my screen, explosion particles surround my ship (whatever those particle thingys are), and other weird stuff like that. If you have one of those patterns somebody might be able to figure this out.

Please forgive this intrusion...

JCMan - I had similar problems to what you describe, albeit with a different video card. Here's something you might want to try...

Check your Vagp (AGP Voltage) in BIOS, and if it's less than, say, 1.7 then up it to that, or maybe as high as 1.8 (Do this at your own risk!).

When checking out causes of similar issues with my card, I discovered that some cards (ATI in particular) tend to be a little power-hungry. When I checked my BIOS, I saw that Vagp was at the default of 1.5V, so I tweaked it up to a recommended 1.7. Not a single CTD yet (Knocking on every piece of wood I can find, however... )

I don't know if Nvidia cards have the same issues, but it may point you an a proper direction to find a cure.

Hope this helps...

Floyd.

JCMAN: "But now the odd thing is, Im having the same problem. Mine just randomly CTD all the time (RC-1 to RC-4)."

I understand that you are having a CTD, but it's not the same as I was experiencing. I was rock steady in all prior releases, the CTD caught me by surprise. The troubleshotting guide describes some troubleshooting tips like taking back the graphics accelerator slider one tick.

Does anyone know what "enable write combining" does? It is a single check box, mine is on, any recommendations on how this effects stability or performance?

PS: have played a few more hours, no more CTD. It must have been the bad kharma from shooting my oewn guys! So far RC4 rules!! Adding armed escorts for the traders....now that's roleplaying.

Windows can answer that question for you. Just click the "?" in the upper right corner of the window that option is displayed (troubleshooting tab I think) and click on the option for an explanation.

I've seen it suggested to turn that off for other games. Might be worth a try if you are experiencing graphic anomolies.

Not just current, I still have an Nvidia Geforce2 card on one of my Compaq's that is supposed to be a 4X AGP. Only problem is that it simply refuses to get out of PCI mode. I've put in an ATI and there are no problems, so I know it's the card. I've also updated the AGP drivers, the motherboard drivers, the PCI drivers, the IDE drivers... EVERYTHING and the garbage refuses to work properly.

Also, it's the ONLY computer I have (I have 4) that still gives me CTD's on BCMG and it has a 2Ghz processor, 512 Megs of RAM and that junk 64MB video card.

I know I'll never buy an Nvidia card again.

I was died in the wool NVidia until the "blow dryer in a box" FX series.

I absolutely refused any ATI cards because of bad prior experience until someone convinced me to try the 9700. Been happy with it since.

As for CTD's, I've had a few, not many, but some of them have been for no reason at all...just cruising along not touching anything and bam desktop. It's definitely not a major issue, but I'm gonna check out my AGP voltage as suggested.

Heh.....Well, It was cheap... 99 dollars is not so bad when you just need to run 1 game. But I can understand where youre comming from..... I would get a top end ATI if I had the will.

As for the crashing, today it didn't crash. What a miricle!!! But yesterday?....man...... Mabie my cpu was just hot and needed to cool down (CPU had been on for 4 days straight). Multiplayer is just acting funny now. O-well, hopefully by the time the real patch comes out it will help fix all this. I have also experienced it when I just sit there doing nothing then WAM! im looking at my beautifuly ugly deaktop. That is rare though. Yes, I have tried all the tech support too. Mabie my computer sucks? Possibly.

Srry for the delay in posting, It's hard when you do nights....
