Probably not. It depends on the craft.

Rule of thumb: if it doesn't say VTOL, TAXI or HJ - and you're moving forward (quick!! look out the window!) then you're in FTOL.

EDIT: I have edited that section of the tutorial again. To download the edited version, check the first post in this thread for the URL. I only added info on how to use the fighters. This meant revising p58-59, the part where you are asked to target a fighter.

Now, before you go running off half-cocked with the full game, try the IA scenarios first!!

I noticed this during the tutorial, is why it is in here and not trouble forum. Anyhoo, notice the names of the officers are not there, and it says "d of file" which I assume is end of file... it is as if the file that contains my Officers names is truncated or something. I can still select all officers and assign them, so is not a large problem, just wondering if it is common or easy fix.

No clue what you're talking about - but it sounds like you botched your environment.

And that image is unreachable btw, so I didn't see it.

Finally, please don't turn this thread into a tech support thread or your posts will be deleted.

The same thing happened to me, so I decided to do a little experiment. Started a new game, sent a marine to SC-1 and SC-2. Launch both of them. Order SC-2 to halt and order SC-1 to tow SC-2.

Then I activate my tractor beam and capture SC-1. Set my jump target to Venus and press Shift+9. Everything is normal, I get the usual message, "Configuring jump profile","Inputting navigation co-ordinates" and "Engaging hyperdrive profile", but the ship doesn┬┤t jump.

The FPA indicator show "H/S" status, the SVI show zero speed and nothing happens. When I order SC-1 to release SC-2 then I jump immediately towing SC-1.

I re-installed the game, applied the 2.00.00 patch and then the 2.00.10 patch, tried the above again and the same thing happens.

Since you SC, have tried his saved game with no problem I was not sure to post this here or in the tech support.

I just wanted to comment on his problem as this happened to me too.

Did you read the part above where I talk about the effects of tow chaining?

It might be an issue with daisy chain towing, dunno. I will make a note of it and look at it when I have fewer more important things to worry about.

I noticed that in the tutorial it says that a space ships hull and internal systems will not take damage until the shields are down and the armor has been destroyed (pg 5). When I am playing, the moment that my shields go down and I get hit my internal systems and hull takes damage, regardless of my armor meter. Is this a problem with the tutorial, or the game and if it is a bug can you please fix it?

Ps. I have the 2.00.10 patch installed

The manual and tutorial are accurate. Read them again and it will all make sense.

Like everyone else I must congratulate you on the level of support provided.

I have just completed the tutorial and experienced similar problems as other people - but put them down to the fact that I wasn't as rigorous in following directions as others appear to have been. I worked around the problems, but it is reassuring to note that others had similar problems and to have seen your response to these - thanks.

My query concerns the page number references in the tutorial pdf, which don't link with the page numbers in my version of the manual. I have bought the game in a DVD plastic box - is there another printing with different page numbers in the US? - if so is there any way to get hold of a pdf of the US version of the manual?

great game... I 've died very rapidly, three times, in my attempts to play free form games, but am still very enthusiastic!

It depends on where you got hit. e.g. you could throw a rock at a cardboard box containing a glass of water; while the rock may not penetrate the box, the glass might break, topple over and spill the water etc.

Another example, punching someone in the stomach. Your fist may not penetrate his skin (unless you are watching some silly Chinese movie), but he may take internal injury.

Same principle. Except that the shields - when up and holding - prevent the armor from being affected by weapons impact. While the armor only tempers it and does not guarantee that some internal damage may not occur.

The tutorial references the US manual. If I spent time making it reference any other manual, then I have to do it for all non-US printings of the manual. Don't have time for that. I provided a single manual manuscript to Dreamcatcher and they laid it out in different territories based on their printing, layout etc. I have no control over that. Sorry.

Fair enough.

The tutorial is great, it opens the door to the world you have created without revealing too much of what lies beyond.

Having played a million and one computer games over the past twenty years (including previous battlecruiser demos that were completely beyond me), the scope of this game is phenomenal and the fact that everything is not "presented on a plate" and that a little more effort is required to learn what to do increases the enjoyment.

heh, thanks for reminding me that I needed to update it. And thats just one (the second powerful and my primary test rig) of 11 machines I have here in my lab. The most powerful is a P4 3Ghz with a bunch of different components (e.g. GF 6800 video card).

Good heavens, for a rig like that, who would be running a PCI card? So no, I didn't forget. An AGP card is the standard; so if you have one, you don't need to specify it. You only specify PCI if you are still in the dark ages.

I have revised the "TOWING AND DELIVERING SHIPS" section (p34) of the tutorial to take into account the possibility that TB daisy chaining will not work under certain circumstances.

quote:

TOWING AND DELIVERING SHIPS

If you know where the stations and bases in the game are located (which you probably don’t, since you probably have not yet looked at the “Launch Bases” section of the game appendix), you should know that the nearest friendly or neutral station where you can deliver the Zaroth, is the Orion station located in the Centris region. Yeah, take a quick peek at the printed game map. That region just so happens to be one jump away from your current location. How convenient.

Now that you know how to do this – no, I’m not going to repeat it – target the Centris jump gate and initiate the jump to that region. If the CC fails to jump, it is because of the mass propagated along the TB daisy chain. There are two ways around this. You can either (a) disengage the TB on the shuttle, then issue it orders to escort the CC (so that it follows you when you jump) or (
B)
give the shuttle orders to tow “nothing (disable)”, which will cause it to drop the TB. Then manually tow the Zaroth using the CC. Give the shuttle orders to “rtb” and when it docks with the CC, jump to the Centris region.

After you have jumped into Centris, locate the “Orion” station on radar, then wait for your jump engines to re-charge before jumping to it. When you emerge from the jump, press the 0 key to kill your thrust or you will keep moving ahead and eventually crash into the station!!

Now you have two options for delivering the Zaroth to the station, depending on your previous towing method.

(1) Drop the TB on the CC to release the shuttle. Then give the shuttle the “Deliver To” order and select the Orion station from the “friendly” targets list. The shuttle will deliver the Zaroth to the station and then stop. You can then give it the “rtb” order.

(2) If the CC is towing the Zaroth, target the station, move to within 10 km of it and press ALT+D to request docking clearance. The Zaroth will now be delivered once you respond with Y to the prompt.

I too get stuck with the HS @ 50 problem. I save the game at that point. Then I load the save game and everything works fine.

Will I run into this problem in the regular campaign games?

Has this problem be identified and patched in 2.00.12?

Well, I just wanted to thank the SC for the excellent tutorial.

In addition to being an excellent noob guide, it acts as a great refresher for those that have been away from the game a few months!

I'm sure most BC/UC gamers step away from the game on occasion, but the hardcore will always come back.

So, tell us how you fared, what you think of the tutorial (from page 1 - 61, since the rest are just tips) etc

Hi !! just wanted to say that the UC game is great and the tutorial "WELL" an idiot could follow it lol
