Missions for Roam Mode!

From what I have read on various posts on these boards, many people have trouble "role playing" the roam mode of UC and seem as if they would appreciate a little "guidence".

I had an idea and wanted to know what people thought of it before I put it into practice. I thought of creating missions in the form of text documents that people could download from a website. Obviously, they would have no impact or effect on the game itself and they would have no reward or penelty for completing/failing them.

They would be written in the form of opperational instructions from galcom (or insurgents, Gammulans etc) with a short background or reason for the mission, then the mission itself. They could be anything from mining a certain planet and returning the minerals to a certain station for study, to loading 10 OTS weapons for a strike on the Gammulan homeplanet.

It would be fairly easy to set this site up and other people could contribute "missions" if they wanted to. Let me know if there's any interest in this idea. Thanks.

Or you could just have people post their own idea of a mission in one thread like this one. That way it's cheaper than making a site just for that.

Prime did that for awhile on our forum, but then the summer ended and stuff changed. It's still a good reason.

I had a similar idea just yesterday. Galcom would send messages "suggesting" missions you could undertake, much as you have suggested. But the message they send you would be encrypted; you would need to enter your CD key to decrpyt. Enter the wrong key and you get a different jumbled message than you received.

From the player's perspective it's just another feature with a twist. I wouldn't presume to say what 3000AD's perspective might be but I don't think it's a security liability at all.

Edit:

In fact, I'm here on the forums looking for posts on interesting places to go and do and see. I like the open endedness of the roam campaign but would like to do the occasion mission so I can take a break from conquering the galaxy. Basically, textual missions would be perfect.

Here's your mission. Make your way to the Gammulan Homeworld and take over as many stations along the way as possible. As you take over each station leave a probe to keep an eye on things, eventually you'll recieve Fleet Command Status and you will be able to launch ships from all these stations to escort you, as you make your way into the Galcom Homeworld, you orders are to take your now MASSIVE Fleet and bombard every enemy city that you can find.

You have your orders!

Hey, I'm a quarter of the way there and have already taken over 4 stations... Of course I'll need to rest my ship for a bit, buy 2 replacement fighters, 1 replacement shuttle, hire 6 new marines and 1 engineer, clone 2 of my pilots and wait for about 4 hours or so while my engineers finish fixing my ship... Uh Oh.. "There's something out there"... Gotta go!

We have reports of accessive shipping of weaponry and goods to Gammulon stations. Your vessel is required to attempt to slow that trade by any means neccesary to tip the balance in GalCom's favor.

This mission is continuous, and there is no specific PZ. Good luck.

Why not just write a quick computer program that randomly picks a start location, end location, and objective.

e.g. -Play as Military/Commander/Megaron

-Start at SOL/Earth/Galcom HQ

-Fly to POLARIS/Polaris 1

-Destroy 3 insurgent bases on the planet

GBSIII allows you to do just this. You can even script it so alliances change according to how well you perform.

The best part about scripting your own missions is you can spread them as far apart (time-wise) as you like. The SC apparently prefers the gut-wrenching experience a player gets when he/she must do it all "just in the nick of time" but, using GBS, you can build a series of missions that give you all the breathing room you need.

Oh yes GBS3, and you think the game has a learning curve just wait till you use the GBS.

Actually if your into scripting it won't take long at all to get into making your own scenarios. Just use the KISS method in the beginning and you'll do just fine.

No they just slowly rebuild. I'm hoping that SC will enable the feature of being able to "Capture" a city, in UCAWA, just like you can capture a station right now, but as it stands... when you destroy a city, it eventually gets rebuilt with the Original Alliance/Caste intact.

I created a simple mission generator program for roam mode in UC.

To generate a mission, the program loads a mission template, which contains the text of the mission, then it replaces certain items within the template with actual items from a tree list. The templates and tree list are read from a text file, so are totally customizable.

A couple examples of what these mission templates look like are below:

quote:

Play as the commander of a {COMMAND SHIPS.TRANSPORTS}. Start at {STARSTATIONS}. Fly to {PLANETS} and deploy your mining drones. Sell the minerals you mine to any station(s) of your choosing. The mission is complete when you have earned {CREDITS} credits.

quote:

Play as the commander of a {COMMAND SHIPS.HEAVY CARRIERS}. Start at {STARSTATIONS}. Fly to {PLANETS} and destroy {NUMBERS} enemy bases using {TACTICS} tactics.

The items in the curly braces will be replaced with actual items from the tree list.

The text file only contains a few missions templates that I came up with to test it, and some data to build the tree, but this forum is full of intelligent people and I'm sure we can come up with some really fun ones.

If there is anybody here interested in trying it out, let me know and I will e-mail it to you. I don't have any way of putting it where others can get it, though, so if it turns out to be useful and enough people want it, maybe someone here will put it out where others can get it.

Mission generator, eh? Sounds like it's time to dust off the SP version of Universal Combat. Does it come with a readme file?

Oh wow! I got a laugh from the SC!

If the file is an EXE file, Gmail will not accept it into it's systems to prevent the spread of virus's virusai... whatever...

Anyway, your best bet is to zip it up...

(BTW... FreyarATG-MAIL DOT Com)
