Night on DVD: Alexander Directors Cut

So I just rented this despite having experienced the exercise in cinematic masochism that was the theatrical release. They actually cut 18mins from the film, so I'm hoping the gay porn quotient is significantly lower this time around. I'm putting it on at 8:00pm pst. If you've already seen it, you have until then to stop me.

Nope all the gay pseudoporn is still in there but it's been toned down significantly. They fixed some of the terrible action sequences, though (especially the ridiculous ending). It's definately a better movie but that dosn't say much. Alexander still comes across as a pussy about as capable of leading an army as Depp's Willy Wonka. It just has too many inherent flaws to save.

Original 1/10

Directos 4/10

Here's hoping Baz Luhrman does the subject justice (if that is actually what he is working on, as rumors suggest).

hmmm almost makes me wanna work on a script for hannibal... not the cannibal either, i mean the tough ass carthaginian.

plenty of action, cannae, trebbia, lake trasimene zama.

theres drama with the crossing of the alps, the appinines and the crossing of the lower arno valley where he lost his eye. theres drama when his brother is killed by the romans while in spain. no love story here, this man wasnt a lover, he was raised (more like brainwashed) by his father hamilcar for one thing... the destruction of Rome.

waddya think scriv? i could use some help

and no pseudogay porn references!

ya theres a few you can read:

Hannibal: Enemy of Rome Leonard Cottrell c.1960(this dude traveled the same route as hannibal from tunisia, then carthage, thru spain, over the alps and appenines... good stuff)

The Second Punic War T. Arnold c.1886

Alps and Elephants: Hannibals March Sir Gavin DeBeer c.1959

A Greater Than Napoleon: Scipio Africanus B.H. Hart c.1926

i could overwhelm you with material, but these are all the good ones i read that dont repeat too much what others have said.

Harry Lennox? got a pic? i couldnt find much of a filmography on him.

i personally was leaning toward Oded Fehr (the mummy, mummy returns, deuce bigalow).

and yes hannibal was north african.

The problem, nomad, is that this "historical epic" was two and a half hours of Alexander flirting with guys. Had it been handled politically it might have worked great as part of a "grand historical epic"... which the movie was NOT. It was a big 'ol gay romance that just happened to have people charging around on horses a couple times.

No, this was more of a political platform than a balanced or accurate historical epic.

As for Vin Diesel playing Hannibal (it seems he is also directing)... oh god, no.

i seen something where they were looking at denzel washington as playing hannibal... too dark for a north african, but he does have that "leadership" quality. and id pick him in a heartbeat over vin diesel as hannibal.

maybe vin in a supporting role... like maharbal hannibals cavalry commander, or his brother hasdrubal who gets killed in italy trying to link up with hannibal and the romans (claudius nero)had his head delivered to hannibals camp. or even syphax king of numidia.

one of the many reasons i didnt like the film. being homosexual is fine, but good lord if he was actually that... active he wouldnt have had time to take over half of the known world at that time. to me it centered more on his bi-sexualness than his generalship, which is how alexander conquered as much as he did... he didnt sneak into enemy encampments and cities and sodomize their leaders into submission, he either negotiated, or beat someone so decisively on the field, everyone else in the area pretty much subjugated.

maybe he didnt die from malaria like most scholars thought???

Sodomize thier leaders into submission? theres a tactic that is underutilized!..Re Harry Lennix he starred in Keep the Faith a biopic of Adam Clayton Powell, and his best work was in "Titus" the Shakespearean tragedy recently directed by Julie Tamor.Even if you cant endure Sweet Will, you should check this movie out. Lennix would be an excellent Hannibal
