Sun's awry in the Japanese cosmos

They may live in the land of the rising sun, but that doesn't mean they know anything about it.

According to a survey by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, 42% of Japanese children believe that the Sun rotates around the Earth and 30% of children aged 11-14 do not not know that it sets in the west.

"Both parents and children have fewer opportunities to experience nature, such as watching the sun go down," Hidehiko Agata, an associate professor at the observatory, said in the newspaper Asahi Shimbun. "Nowadays they have access to all kinds of information, but fewer opportunities to learn about life's everyday phenomena."

Earlier this year university researchers found that half Japan's primary and secondary school students had never seen a sunrise or sunset.

The poor grasp of scientific fundamentals has been blamed on the increasing number of hours spent watching TV and playing video games. The children themselves are more likely to blame their heavy workload and attendance at evening cramming schools.

Professor Agata, who wants the national curriculum revised, says some pupils do not know that the Sun, Moon and Earth are spherical.

In a separate survey, 720 children were asked to name "a celestial object that revolves around the earth like a satellite". Only 39% said the Moon. But 47% knew that the Moon seems to change shap because of changes in its position relative to the Earth and the Sun.

You got that right, I blame centralization. The government body is the "family" now. You pack your kids up, send em to kindergarden, then school, then college while never educating them yourself, it's like an assembly line. But then again, how can most people try and educate their kids on top of school if they themselfs have been "assembled".

This is why I homeschool my kids.

The public school system is no longer about education, it is about indoctrination, it is NOT about knowledge, but about getting them to feel good about themselves, it is no longer about debate and right and wrong, it is all about getting along, and diversity.

So Soback, sad but true, a majority do it, but I am in the minority, but the minority is growing, homeschooling is the new mainstream, and it is gonna kill the public schools in about 2 decades, if we last that long.

Unless the Government makes it ilegal. I was watching something before I fell asleep last night don't remember the channel or program (I was almost asleep) but something struck me about a comment "Homeschool kids are not as good in math and science than public schooled children"

They then had people who said pull the other one and others that said it's true. Be prepared if they use comments like that to try and pass bills that make it tougher to homeschool (like only handicapped, medical reasons etc..).

Homeschooling is a direct threat to the Communist/Liberal takeover of America. They couldn't do it militarily, so they've been doing it socially.

I expect homeschooling to be severly curtailed within the next decade, as the numbers of home-schoolers rise and the numbers of public schoolers fall.

They have tried again and again and again, the problem they have is that we now have the internet and MAJOR legal organizations that will come to our aid.

The NEA and others are SOL, and will NOT be able to curtail homeschooling, our lobby is getting stronger by the day, and the proof that it works is getting stronger, and the public schools can't do the job.

I expect homeschooling to become the norm, until the NEA finally explodes and is shown for the socialist indoctrination organization that it actually is.

I look forward to the legal battles, because the contrast will be amazing.

I am also watching the country taking an amazing swing to the right, the internet and the new media are making a HUGE impact, and of course it has screwed up everything that the socalled mainstream media and government lovers have been working on for the last 50 years.

To say that I am LOVING this WHOLE thing would be an understatement of NUCLEAR proportions.
