Shamelessly ganked from Gamecloud:

This Wall Street Journal Online story (paid registration required) reports that id Software co-founder Adrian Carmack was fired earlier this year by the rest of the co-owners of the company and is now suing his ex-teammates to have his employment contract be called invalid. According to the story, long time id publisher Activision wanted to buy the Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein franchises for $90 million last year and even thought about buying id itself for $105 million. While id CEO Todd Hollenshead has stated in the past that id doesn't feel the need to sell its company and prefers to stay private, the Wall Street Journal story claims Adrian Carmack (no relation to id master programmer John Carmack) said the real reason id didn't sell was that the other owners (Hollenshead, John Carmack, Kevin Cloud and Tim Willits) wanted him to sell his 41 percent stake in the company to them for an amount that would have been just $20 million but would have doubled to $40 million if the Activision deal went through.
