Kalshion gripped the handhold as his ship was struck by an enemy torpedo. "How many flipping torps do they have?!" he shouted over the blaring alarms.

"Unknown sir! To many for a ship of that size!" shouted his sensors officer as he gripped the edge of his console. The bridge rumbled as more torps slammed into the shields, one managed to break through and hit one of the upper decks. Fire erupted and several crew were seen flying out into space. Blast doors sealed and fire-suppression systems engaged.

"Launch fighters!" shouted Kalshion as he took a seat in his chair and started barking orders to the Prime Fleet craft in the area.

Presto was just launching his own set of fighters when something hard slammed into the left side of his ship, causing a very wide hole to appear in the hole. "Sir! I don't know what they fired at us, but it bypassed shields and blew apart the secondary launch deck!" shouted one of his officers as fire chained up that side of his ship.

He knew his ship was in deep trouble, he could hear the constant damage reports that flowed into communications. Fire was spreading at a quick rate, the emergency fire suppression systems had failed and no blast doors were sealing. His ship was listing hard to port, fire very evident in space. The G-carrier however ignored him now, figuring the ship was done for anyway. It turned its attention, and it's fighters, toward the Bison Gon Flurie and the lone Earthcom carrier. It's main weapons array fired, splashing the ships shields. The Bison returned in kind, scoring a hit on the carriers starboard side.

Kalshion knew that something just wasn't right though. "How is it that carrier has so many fighters?" he asked himself and ran a sensor check of the ship, he pondered it for a moment. "Is it possible those fighters are clamped to the underside of the hull?" he asked himself and ran another check.

"Sir! Incoming Tranmission from Galactic Command," said his comm. officer. "It's highly encrypted, can't access it sir," she said.

He nodded his head and quickly went into his briefing room; he decrypted the message and read it to himself.

SUBJ: For Your Eyes Only

Stratetic Commanders,

Vanguard High Command has informed me that a delegation of Insurgents is visiting their headquarters in deep Solar orbit. I'm charging one of you to go to that Earthcom Starbase and participate in the talks. I don't care which one of you it is. Ben, I understand you may be otherwise detained at this time. Case, I haven't heard from you in a while. I'll leave who will go for you three to decide. I also don't care if you decide to befriend the Insurgents or make enemies with Earthcom.

I hereby vest in the three of you my authority to formulate new policy and carry it out as you see fit until I say otherwise. I do not wish to be disturbed with this rubbish until our next scheduled high command meeting on April 4th.

Dismissed.

Supreme Commander Clint Renies

Commander-In-Chief

Galactic Command Alliance

===End Transmission===

"Knew it," Kalshion grumbled and slammed his fist against the wall. He did have a laugh though, "rubbish? I must agree," he said before flexing his hand a bit. He accessed the communications system and encrypted his message to Ben Zwycky and Case.

I'm close to where the meetings will take place, I'll head there as soon as possible. I don't personally know what these insurgents have up their sleeves, but I'll keep you two appraised on what transpires.

Strategic Commander Kalshion

Fleet Leader

With the message sent, Kalshion headed back into the bridge and pondered what to do. "Status?"

"Primary launch bay is damaged sir, only got one fighter off before we took a hit. Secondary launch bay is still active, but that blasted carrier is aiming specially for it," said one of his officers. "Also, Commander Presto just reported that he is unable to continue the fight. His carrier is critically damaged, they've got fires on all decks. Weapons and Shields are offline, life support is barely operational. He's got dead as well, he's requesting permission to leave the battlefield,"

"Grant it, tell him to go to Galcom HQ. Inform one of our Nightstars to tow him there. Likewise, we need to be somewhere," he said and stared at the tactical map. More of his ships had just arrived, bringing the Prime Fleet ship count to sixteen now. "Order all ships to open fire on the G-carrier...." he shouted.

November 3, 3020, 0833hrs

ICV Daedalus received a transmission from UCV Deathstrike. Shingen had informed Smitty of his location. Now he wanted to join the fight against the Gams before it was too late. ShoHashi agreed and Shingen, Mariko and Badman transported over to Deathstrike before the Indie cruiser changed course away from the corona and towards the ensuing battle.

------

Pluto/Sol

Now farther away from Gazer1 starstation

The battle had now been joined in earnest as sixteen Prime Fleet craft, consisting of 5 carriers and 11 cruisers, now engaged the lone Stormcarrier. The ship had now deployed its full complement of fifty fighter craft but was not yet done with its supprises. As its shields finally dropped below 10 percent, it beamed 20 warriors to EACH of the attacking capital craft, including Ashdod and Deathstrike! Bison Gon Flurie had broken away just in time.

Operations aboard ECV Ashdod came to a halt as Tracey led her surviving crew of 24 against 20 intruders in the already cramped Vanguard Fleet Starcruiser. On the Sunflash-class UCV Deathstrike, the situation was even more grim as twenty intruders faced off against only Shingen, Smitty, Mariko and Badman. Now came the ultimate test of their close quarters and hand-to-hand combat skills!

------

Starbase Ragnarok orbited Sol on the edge of its corona. Since the sun's atmosphere was never completely spherical and fluctuated up and down the orbital starstation often passed within the fiery plasmic cloud surrounding the yellow dwarf star. Consequently, the Vanguard fleet HeadQuarters (VHQ) was equipped to harness nearly all of the enormous energy that bombarded it every day. One solar orbit took roughly 8 earth days.

The starstation itself consisted of several three-dimensional triangles connected by long thin wires which could be surrounded by a large spherical energy shield 400km in diameter. This meta-structure could not only weather the sun's activity without the shields but could also take on other configurations in the event of attack.

Though it was technically an orbital starstation, its official name was Starbase Ragnarok. This large structure served as one of two seats of Vanguard Fleet operations. While Galactic Command also undertook scientific and research operations on behalf of Terran, Empirian and Vesperon governments, Earth Command focused solely on defence and for the Terran United Free Nations. This was reflected in Ragnarok's lack of major research labs. Everything was devoted purely to military operations.

The other seat of Earth Command operations consisted of seven atmospheric floating cities in the thick atmosphere of Venus. Each of those Starbases had 12 to 17 times the capacity of Ragnarok alone. Collectively the Venerean installations were called Earth Command Headquarters, constructed after the formation of Galactic Command in 2993.

Now an Insurgent Heavy Carrier was preparing to dock with this starbase in a firebreathing solar orbit. And Bison Gon Flurie was now enroute as well. "ICV Daedalus, you are clear for docking in Carrier Bay 92. Welcome home Garrison."

Rick addressed the all too familiar docking master, "Thank you, Beverly." But his ship was his real home. And she and her crew were still out there dying, without their Commander!

Commander Canshow's helm officer slowly guided the bulky and nimble Battlecruiser toward a forcefield-covered opening near one corner of the nearest 3D triangle structure. The forcefield was only configured at the moment to hold the air in and let any metallic object pass through unimpeded in or out. As Dadealus slowly buzzed through the field into the room, Shohashi saw a room so massive it could probably hold three hundred such craft. It was a full service drydock shipyard, with several cruisers and carriers in all stages of construction, dismantling, resupplying, refitting and every conceivable stage in between. Docking tractor beams came to bear on the Insurgent craft as it came almost to rest on the expansive deckplating.

Carrier Bay 92 moored the Insurgent Mark Two Battlecruiser far from the room's nearest wall. A service tower had risen from the deck plating and was now telescoping a docking tunnel to the ship. Canshow knew the tractor beam moorings were keeping Daedalus from leaving even if he wanted it to. But he preferred to not directly connect his ship with anything metallic from Earthcom, at least for the time being. ShoHashi gave him a questioning look as instructions were relayed to not use the docking tunnel. "Gentlemen, if you will follow me to our lowest deck?" Canshow said as he moved to Daedalus' turbolift. Like all Galactans, Dadealus was equipped with a long sternward-facing embarkation ramp normally used for planetary landing operations. The ramp began to lower as 10 of Canshow's marines stood at the ready in full battle attire. Daedalus had its own air-tight forcefield across this ventral portal not unlike the one they'd just passed through. Rick, Canshow and ShoHashi could see the Earthcom personnel looking up at them from the main deck were not wearing masks, just armed with light weaponry, all holstered.

Canshow's marines descended the ramp first, through Daedalus' forcefield, in pairs; and proceeded to take up defensive positions at and around the ramp's base. The Earthcom personnel further away continued moving about as if nothing was amiss. The ones gathered around the ramp's base, not more than two dozen, just stood there and did not reach for their weapons. Then the three Commanders came down the ramp too. The slightly cooler air of Ragnarok's expansive Flight Deck 4 was scrubbed differently than on Daedalus, but just berely.

At the head of the crowd of Earthcom personnel stood a man Rick recognized. Upon seeing Garrison, he stepped forward. "Gentlemen, welcome to VHQ." He made no gestures for his associates to follow or stay behind, but several did follow. "Which one of you is the Commander?"

Canshow stepped forward, "I am Canshow, Commander of this vessel. This is Admiral ShoHashi, my commanding officer."

"Commander? Admiral?" The man nodded to them and to Rick. "Sergeant Major Teknocack Prime. My ship happened to be here and I was tasked with escorting you to your meeting with the flag officer in charge of these talks. Your marines are more than welcome to accompany us. Additionally we have a standing rule that all personnel of legal age must be armed at all times. That is our insurance policy against intruders and effectively deters internal crime as well. This way please." He gestured toward the base of the maintenance tower where a 20-man personnel carrier awaited them. The personnel carrier only took them to the edge of the Flight Deck. It took more than an hour of walking corridors and escalators and riding turbolifts and more personnel carriers - passing by this 3D triangular structure's operations section - before they finally reached a small conference room. Sergeant Major Prime looked to Garrison. "You'll like this bigwig, brother."

"Petty Officer Prichart." Canshow addressed his most senior Marine present. "You and your top Crewman enter the room with us. Station your 8 other men outside all this room's exits."

"Understood, Commander." Prichart saluted and relayed the orders. Prime chimed in. "Now if you'll excuse me, gentlemen, ECV Stormhammer is needed out on patrol in light of the recent Gammulan incursion."

Rick nodded, "Thanks for your help, Tek. Godspeed!" Teknocack returned Garrison's nodd and left. The conference room door sighed open and ShoHashi, Canshow, Garrison, Prichart and Prichart's right-hand marine entered.

The commissioned officer in charge stood to greet them as Garrison snapped off a salute. "Gents, I am Major Kelley. I will be handling these talks." Kelley said returning Rick's salute. They were just about to sit down before the door on the opposite wall chimed. "Enter" Kelley said. The door opened and in walked first two even more heavily armed Galcom Marines followed by the Prime Fleet Leader.

Kalshion stared at those in the room; he folded his arms over his chest and nodded. "I see," he muttered to himself and motioned for his marines to stay by the door. "I don't want to be interrupted ok?" he told them, both nodded and stay by the door. He knew ten others were standing outside in the corridor, he had given them orders not to have their weapons at the ready, he didn't want to give them a threatening posture as he did have a secret interest in this meeting.

He walked toward the table and stopped. "Not sure if introductions have been done, but the names Kalshion, Strategic Commander of Galcom Prime Fleet. I'm here under the authority of Supreme Commander Clint Renies, and have been granted full authority to act on Galcoms Behalf," he looked at those in attendence. He then glanced over his shoulder at one of his marines who had his hand up to his helmet. He walked casually over to Kalshion and whispered into his ear before handing him a brief case, inside held the intelligence reports about various questionable insurgent activity. He was glad to have brought them along, he waited until the marine was back at his post before setting the case on top of the table.

Kalshion wasn't much in the mood to listen to insurgents, but at the same time, he did have the authority to act on Galcom's behalf, which means what he did now would mean the difference between a full blown war between the insurgents, or between Earthcom, or peace for all. 'Peace', he let that word ring in his head for awhile. With peace there would be no need for soldiers like me, then again, I have to think of the civilians more so, he nodded and then looked at the insurgent he knew as Shohashi. "I know who you are," he said. "What about the rest of you?" he asked, looking about the room.

In the time that Badman had spent aboard ICV Daedalus, he had practiced various forms of combat with Shingen and Mariko. The two of them taught him about small and large arms aiming and control and modern martial arts. As a springboard from the computer-taught fencing demonstrations, Badman proceeded to teach them his century's art of sabre dueling, mainly without a shield. Badman also knew a thing or two about sword fashioning and - after studying 31st century metals in detail - wrought his own new blade in Daedalus' research lab.

Now all three had joined Smitty aboard UCV Deathstrike only to be boarded by 20 intruders from the Stromcarrier before the Sunflash cruiser could even get a shot away. They were well trained too! So as Badman exhausted his supply of projectile ammunition from the weapons issued him by Shingen's crew of two, he took a deep breath as he reverted to his many years of training and teaching in his native Roman combat method - and withdrew his shiny new shard from its place. Smitty took great care to protect the ship's internals from the intruders, as Mariko layed down covering fire with deadly accuracy. And in his own way, Shingen quickly extinguished enemy life that had invaded his home.

Meanwhile, the odds were much better aboard Ashdod - 24 to 20 rather than 4 to 20. But Tracey still lost many of her best enlisted men. Combat Officer Staff Sergeant Brock Lewis moved and fought with a speed that defied his 7'4" 300lb frame.

The intruders wore full pressure suits that hid their faces from their victims. When Shingen finally had a bit of respite from the fighting in the corridor he was in, he cut open one of the dead intruders' helmets with his ZS10....

.... only to discover that these attackers were not Gammulan at all! Suddenly, several more came rushing at him from around the corner....

"I know who you are," Kalshion said to ShoHashi. "What about the rest of you?" he asked, looking about the room. Here it was, a meeting of two groups of humans that had been enemies since the early 2400s. Due to the tension in the room, the assembled individuals did not speak for nearly a minute, they just looked at each other.

Kelley broke the silence as he slowly drew in a breath, "I'm Major Kelley, Vanguard Fleet's commissoined officer for these talks." He pointed to the Non-Commissioned Officer next to the Insurgents. "This meeting was the idea of First Sergeant Richard Garrison."

The room fell silent as Sho realized they all now looked to him. "Admiral ShoHashi, Co-Commander of the Insurgent Fleet. This man to my right is Commander Canshow." He paused. "He will be representing our field officers in these talks."

Kelley stood up and strolled toward Kalshion's side of the table. "I haven't been given the same level of authority to act as have you, Fleet Leader. In fact, I don't even want to be here. I was ordered to by my Colonel." He took a new seat next to Kalshion. "I'm not a diplomat and I don't want to try. Garrison, you wanted them here," Kelley said pointing to Sho and canshow, "You be our mediator." Kelley glanced over at Kalshion's reports, which he could see quite clearly now. "Strategic Commander, if you would like to interface your reports with this room's holographic projector?" He gestured toward a port on the table, "...we can get started. I see you might be citing some of the same incidents as I will."

Garrison spoke up as he remained seated, "Gentlemen we are here to address our differences, attempt to solve them, and better defend our respective peoples. I believe the best way is not to unite by conquering the other, as we've failed to do for the last 500 years, but to join together as an Alliance of sovereign nations - from where ever we are in the galaxy - united against the emerging threats we now face." With the intro and the meeting's purpose stated, Garrison turned to Kalshion. "Let us start by tackling our differences. Fleet Leader, would you care to start us off?"

Kalshion nodded and interfaced his reports; he flipped through them until he found the first of ten different reports. "Keep in mind, the civilian populace won't stand for the insurgents becoming an independent state. Let alone allies, with the numbers of innocents you've killed - and no I don't mind military. As much as I hate to admit it, military are prime targets and not worthy of being considered 'hands-off'. Civilians, however, are hands-off. Most don't know how to fight on their own, others rely almost entirely on the military and police to protect. Which is why I find it hard to understand some of these reports," he said and displayed a report made close to three years ago.

He had several holographic pictures appear. One showed a gutted transport, with bodies floating in space - amongst them - women and children. "Three year's ago, a police patrol encountered an SOS from a civilian passenger transport. That transport was carrying over two hundred civilians from Earth to another colony. The transport was unarmed, no weapons. Yet one of your ships felt it was prudent to open fire on it, killing all on board - including them," he pointed at the women and child. "Tell me, what did they, and the hundreds more on that ship, do to deserve a cold death? Might I also add that the captain was surrendering his ship, in order to save those lives, yet one of your ships just blew it apart without mercy. This is just one of many I want to discuss, this kind of murderous killing has been witnessed and reported at least eight times over the past five years..

As he sat there, waiting for an answer; he wondered what the insurgent admiral would say. Would he try and say that 'your military have killed innocent insurgents as well, what's does different?', in the back of his mind - the difference was simple - the insurgents made the choice to put themselves in the line of fire. These civilians did not.

Shingen rolled to his left, looking for an available exit. He was exhausted and battle-weary.

He drew breath and placed his back against the bulkhead, out of ammo, out of options he faced his attackers.

5 Gammulan assualt marines came at him with guns drawn. They paused momentarily..taken aback by his apparent passive stance.

Suddenly from around the dark corroridor, Mariko struck! She went low, attacking the legs of the first marine, bringing him down. She delivered a killing blow to the marine's neck. She stood and began to twirl like the a ballerina, taking out two more with accurate, deadly kicks to the head.

She steadied and stood before the last two. They were both dumbfounded. Staring at this small female who had just killed three for there comrades.

Taking the initiative, Shingen rose and grabbed the closest marine by the neck. Twisting, he broke the neck of the marine. He knelt and spun, knocking the last off his legs.

Mariko, already in the blood-lust sprung. The last enemy never had a chance as she ripped out his throat and screamed as the blood flashed over her.

She then lept at Shingen. Claws, teeth and death came after him! He rolled with her, trying not to do any damage, but trying to save his own neck!

She screamed and hit him in the face.. hard. Blood came from his lip as he held her down. Several minutes later, Badman came up behind them both.

"Are you guys ok?" He stared at the surrounding corpses in the corridor feeling vastly out of his element.

Shingen held Mariko down for several more minutes, until her breathing slowed.

He finally stood and looked around.

His ship was a wreak!

Admiral ShoHashi listened intently to what Kalshion was saying. These were the kinds of things that gave the Insurgents a bad reputation, especially without getting all the facts. He paused a moement to collect his thoughts.

"It is no secret that we Insurgents and the forces of GalCom have had skirmishes here and there. However, I would like to point out that we do not attack unarmed civilians. Take this incident you speak of for example. If this was done by one of my ships, I'd have known about it," said ShoHashi.

Kalshion listened patiently as ShoHashi continued.

"How do you even know it was an Insurgent ship? The Gammulans have made incursions into our space and have done similar things. They don't care if ships are civilian or military. All they care about is killing humans. How do you know that this wasn't a Gammulan attack? Did you even do an investigation of the wreckage or are you just going by heresay from some passing vessel that saw this? Surely, if you had, your scans would show who committed the atrocity by the weapon signatures permeating the wreckage."

It was common knowledge, or at least the Admiral thought it was, that each weapon in existence had a unique energy signature. Even though a weapon used by two different races was identical, it could be ascertained which race it by the energy modulation signature that was left behind on wreckage. Based on debris from weapon fire, scans could tell what kind of weapon was used as well as what race used it.

Kalshion took a seat, thinking hard on what Shohashi said; the man had a point, and it was something he hadn't considered due to all the innocent deaths that went on, his push to end insurgent lives that clouded his own judgement. "Thinking of it that way, you do have a point," he said and tapped his shoulder. "If they wanted to, I supposed it is possible for them to change their weapon signatures to match known Insurgent profiles, perhaps even Galcom profiles as well. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if half of these reports of your people attacking unarmed ships could very well be traced back to Gammulan ships,"

"The thing is, how do we prove that your ships didn't actually attack these unarmed ships? We'd need proof," he stared at Shohashi. Though he knew it would be hard to convince those above him, proof would go a long way. He did, however, intend to inform his science officer to run some scans on the weapon signaures they found on the debris and to go back and see if there's a way to 'peel' away the Insurgent signature and see if there's a hidden one beneath.

Shingen stood, helping Mariko to her feet. She brushed her head with her hand, wiping off the sweat. She shoved Shingen, low..in the chest, cursing him.. but walked away into the dark.

Shingen turned to his ship. It was a wreak. Gammulan bodies were everywhere, along with most of his support crew.

He hit his coms. "Smit! Are you still alive down there?"

Several seconds passed with nothing but static.

"Yo..boss! What the hell is going on?"

"Is engineering secure?"

"Yep..I'm the last one here..we got dead all over the bay.."

Shingen thought for a minute..silent.

"Hold your position, Smit. I'm going to find out what the hell is up."

Shingen turn and entered the turbolift for command.

Shingen walked out of the engineering bay.

Bodies littered the corridor.

He went to work.

He lifted the first body and dragged it to the end of the corridor.

He went for the next.

Mariko came out of the engineering bay,

"There are too many bodies. We either jump to empty space, or we bury them here."

"No one cares anyway,"
