Well, about 50% or more of any planets surface is barren. There are only regions with dozens of small bases where you can find structures and units.
Did you try going in tac-ops mode and looking around for those regions on the planet?
Because if your just landing on the planet with no pre-set destination, chances are, your not going to appear over one of those bases.
If you have the manual, look in there for what im talking about.
This also goes for campaign mode.

You need to use Tacops to locate the mzone where the bases are. Then set a waypoint to that base. When you enter the planet, you'll be there. Its in the manual.

Tacops is key to waging war on a planet whether you deploy fighters, shuttles, your Command ship, or away teams via the transporter. Mess around with tacops long enough and you will be able to command your units effectively. Good hunting brother.

But well, i have used abit time on the game now.
I can assgn and use the crew interface. I can fll up a shuttle with stuf and bring it to planets. I can set on surface waypoints and get my shuttle to se them and follow the orders. I have learned to work the fighters as main weapon.
I can use my marines and isue them orders. Driving like a taxi driver my self, use the diffrent weapons and in general have an idea for how to do things.
I stil die everytime i get within 10km of an enemy base...
in 50% of the times i get back to space to my ship, its either blown up or so badly dameged that my new prime ship is a shuttle with a probe, a OC and 20 marines.
Stil working out the stuf with cargo pods. i tractor them, they get close and then i kinda run out of ideas.
i am a stubborn old fart that realy dont like giving up. I learn this game the old way. click here and there and if you dont die you di it correct...i realy hatet that game after the first 10 hours, now im passing 50 hours + and are loving it.
As a silenhunter sub fanatic knightblade could end up killing my urge for those ww2 coffins, and if its true that game is the same ust with 3 d and walk inside the ship, well then my eve online 2005 subscription could be in danger. Im having a blast, and when im just that tad more confident, ill start roam someones server.....blowing shitz up.....

I really do suggest having a go at Echo Squad, It'll give you some good training and insight into the AI behaviour to have your guys "on your wing" all the time ....... AND IT'S GOT COCKPITS for all 4 fighters (I know, I know, I must get over that).
Then .... to really flesh it all out ..... grab All Aspect Warfare or Angle of Attack, depending on your preference ..... even just to see where the graphics engines are heading .... astounding.
.... we need more like you.

Welcome to our nightmare....err addiction.
Remember my warning about Lt Resnig at the other forum?
Want to straighten him out so you can actually get rid of the intruders?
When he gives you the intruder alert, send his inept fannie to a shuttle and watch how quickly his marines clean it out. That or he'll suddenly go off duty and head for his quarters no matter what you tell him to do.
Assign your compliment of Marines to search duty yourself. All of them.
The intruders will end up dead or in the brig. Afterward, check your shuttles for stolen cargo. Intruders have really sticky fingers.
If all else fails, I beam Resnig down to a lifeless moon and have the MO clone a new Resnig. One without the stubborn streak.
When your officers have gained enough experience they will shut down launch control automatically.

I have summarily executed an officer in the past... that was fun.
However, last night I managed to out resnig Resnig.... I won't go into the list of mistakes that led to it but I ended up with a Raider blowing holes in the side of my shiny MkIII because I never had the shields up. Fortunately I managed to limp back for repairs and no one was killed....

I was flying through space to the Gammulan region, and i noticed my little CAS thing blinking red.
I check the (forgot what its called) personell thingy, just below the option where u can choose tac-ops, and i had like 8 intruders on board, and half my marines were stationed, the other half sleeping.
My officer had 74 AI, and he still neglected to mention any intruders were on board
Next thing later, combat breaks out on deck, and i have to escape to a shuttle while i order the marines to kill the scum.
I sent resnig to the bridge, and everyone else to the shuttles
that basterd got what he deserved.
