Birth of the GCV Indomitable

I can remember standing on my bridge the day we left GALCOM HQ. The memory will never be replaced with something less. The first time I sat in the captains chair it finally hit me, this ship was mine. Nobody else would have the luck of commanding it or it's more than talented crew.

As I turned to my Nav and Flight officers with hope in my eyes, I had them plot a course to mars. Little did I know I would soon know what it is to command a vessel that was the pride of GALCOM and also a vessel and crew that has yet to be tested in the rigors of space.

The course was set for mars and I gave the call to engage the hyperspace drive. Had I known what was going to happen next, I would have prepared some different words. My flight officer over the comm gave out the call heard to many times in the sims

"Prepare to engage hyperdrive"

Then it happened, the hyperdrive whirred up and just as quickly as it had started to start moving the ship at it's hyper-speeds, it gave a report louder than any explosion I had ever heard. The whole engine bay was in shambles due to the explosion.

Not but ten seconds after this even, systems engineers swarmed over the engine room in a mad atempt to correct and fix the problems at hand. The repairs took six days at GALCOM HQ after we were towed back by the GCV Lonewolf. Our next venture would not be so calm.

My GCV Indomitable left port 10 days later, AGAIN. This time with a new Falcon class hyperdrive and several repairs to her engines. The course was set for the mars jumpoint and to my disbelief, we soon entetred the mars region of Sol.

This was to be a standard deploy and retrival of the GCV Indomitable marine contingent, the 84th Hellwinds. All four of the shuttles left the batttle cruiser. Each with their compliment of ten marines, a mining drone, and the ATV for the command section of the marines.

All was going as planned. The marines deployed witha .2k variance of each other and the shuttles left to do their mining thing. If only the damned insurgants hadn't picked that time to attack Cetie Alpha command base 4 kilometers away.

Sitting on the bridge listening to a vintage CD from late earth era by the name of Pink Floyd, I heard the SOS come in. Here it was, my first command action of my six month deployment. Normally one would look back to their training for the proper action for the situations. The only problem was, my training was a short year of book work. No amount of book work could prepare a commander for a situation like this. I can remember thinking that the psyche evaluations of me as a commander with a aggressive passion and a iron will were hopefully right. At least thats what those 40 marines were hoping, and praying.

I gave the call, three interceptrs loaded with ATG and ATA missiles were dispatched with orders to make plantfall ASAP. The shuttles and mining drones were recalled right there and then with IC 4 as escort. The Indomitable moved into position in orbit ready to deleiver OTS Missiles if necessary and the marines were informed of the situation.

All I could think about were those boys down there and what they must be thinking and doing. They were just fresh out of the academy and right off GALCOM HQ. Who would have thought after their unpredicable R&R they'd be seeing this much action.

Hell, I never though I'd be seeing this kind of action. The marines were given oders to go defend the objective of Cetie Alpha and the rest is history. Eight of my marines were lost that day and IC 1 took heavy dmage and required a shuttle tow back to The Indomitable.

I spent the next day in my quarters thinking about those eight men who lost their lives to GALCOM. What can prepare somebody for knowing that the loss of human lives is at their hands? Today it is the hardest and worst memory I can recall. I hope I never lose the memory of those eight men. Called to duty so quickly, and to so quickly die for a cause they felt was right.
