Members of the ISS, this is our time to shine in the RP world of BC3K. I plan on making an entire series of these threads. Anyone can join in, and I hope you do, but it's mainly for ISS members.

This volume will center on a mole at ISS HQ: how we find out we have one, how we find him/her, and how we deal with him/her.

{rp on}

Commander Alun Tringad sat in his office aboard Renegade, going through the endless stack of reports and paperwork. 'Paperwork' really didn't describe it anymore, but the term stuck.

The recent re-structuring of ISS Fleet was hell on the command staff. How the simple changing of the units names was causing so much trouble was beyond him.

As he read each report, he came across something strange, a report that didn't belong in his office. 'Must be a mixup' thought Tringad. But when he saw that a page, mearly a term for the next screenful of text nowadays, was missing, he knew something was wrong. He was about to investigate when there was a buzz from his desk.

"Sir, incoming transmission from the Midway" came the secretary's voice over the commlink.

"Ok, put it through" replied Tringad.

Commander Danz Borin's face appeared on the screen. Borin had been Tringad's tactical officer and XO aboard the Black Falcon for a long time before getting his own command, the GCV Midway (a Starcruiser-class Heavy Cruiser), and assigned to the First ISS Task Force.

"Danz, been a month since I last heard from you, what the hell is wrong with you?" yelled Tringad with a smile.

"Been busy, boss" replied borin.

"Doing what?"

"My job, what do you think?"

"Don't make me pull rank" Tringad's smile got bigger.

"You don't outrank me anymore, remember?"

"Damn, what were the brass at Galcom HQ thinking when they promoted you?"

"I was about to ask the same of DeSylva when he made you TSA Coordinator" Borin's smile caught up with Tringad's.

"Alright, enough. Anyway, what's new? Why bother me in my office?" asked Tringad.

"Had to check in, make sure all that paperwork hadn't killed you."

"It almost has. You on Renegade?"

"Yup, just got in"

"Good, meet me for a drink in the bar, I get off in fifteen minutes"

"Alright, meet you there"

--------------------

Tringad sat down at his favorite table. Officers of his position weren't supposed to have a favorite table, but he did anyway.

"So, why did you want to meet?" asked Borin.

"Here, look at this. Tell me what you think" Tringad handed him the datapad.

"Hm, that's strange. A whole page is missing?" asked Borin after looking through the report.

"Yeah, not only that, but it's not even from my wing. It's from Ristar's Intel Wing"

"Well, you know pen-pushers, they always mix things up"

"Not this bad, Intel Wing reports are top-secret, and are not filed by normal Fleet staff"

"I wouldn't worry about it so much, Alun, it's just a missplaced report," Borin said as he took a sip of his drink.

"Maybe, but you know me, 'mister paranoid'. I'll check in with Ristar and see if he knows anything. This might just be bigger then we thought.

{rp off}

Well, people, jump in. Later.

[rp]Ben was still becoming accustomed to his new position as Adjutant to the fleet commander of ISS. It was an incredible honour, and an awesome responsibility to be the galactic eyes and ears of the fleet commander, and act as his representative in many situations. His security clearance was only one below command level. His parents had been so proud when he had told them. Even with the Zwycky familyÔÇÖs illustrious heritage, no one had ever reached such a position. Not that his head was in the clouds- he understood his duties and responsibilities and was capable of them, but he still found joy in the title of his personnel file.

After filing his latest tactical report, Ben decided to head over to Renegade stations main bar to relax, as his latest tour of duty was now over. As he walked through the station corridors, he thought to himself as he often did- that he would have liked to have someone to share this life of his with. Someone like Jana or his thoughts momentarily drifted to the girl who had unknowingly caused him so much pain, the one he grew up with, who captivated him all those years. He dismissed those thoughts. They never did any good.

He reached the bar and spotted the commander of the Tactical Support Wing in a conversation with a commander he wasnÔÇÖt familiar with. His voice seemed strangely familiar though, which probably meant theyÔÇÖd been introduced. It happened a lot. Ben just caught the end of their conversation.

This might just be bigger than we thought.

ÔÇ£Hi Alun! HowÔÇÖs it going?ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£Hi Ben! Not too bad. How are things in escort wing? Josh pushing you all too hard?ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£Not too hard, not too slack. He seems to be adjusting well to his new position, and making good use of us all. I really feel like weÔÇÖve been doing some good out there.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£ThatÔÇÖs encouraging. Hey, I hear congratulations are in order!ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£You heard about that? Yeah, weÔÇÖre all pretty happy about that. A lot of us could see it happening, but didnÔÇÖt expect it quite so soon. It looks pretty likely theyÔÇÖll want me to do the ceremony, which will be a new challenge, but an enjoyable one I hope. They make a great couple. What was that you were talking about just now?ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£Here, take a look at this.ÔÇØ Alun handed him the report.

ÔÇ£Ah, yes, I heard about this situation. Hey, thereÔÇÖs a page missing!ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£ThatÔÇÖs what IÔÇÖm worried about.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£You think itÔÇÖs a lapse in security?ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs a possibility.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£Really? If someone was leaking this report, theyÔÇÖd have to be pretty amateurish to make a mistake like deleting a page.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£I still think itÔÇÖs worth looking into.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£Well, thatÔÇÖs up to you, but if youÔÇÖre that worried, why not let Briggs and Elworthy do a residual data analysis on it and the backup of the original file to check for tampering or copying. TheyÔÇÖre pretty experienced in that area, and they know what to look for.ÔÇØ

Thats an idea[/rp]

Well, sorry IÔÇÖm late, Alun, but IÔÇÖve been balancing a lot of things lately. IÔÇÖll let you decide whether you want to use my ex-hackers or not and what they find if you do.

"Briggs and Elworthy. I hear they're pretty good." Tringad looked over at Borin. "What do you think?"

"I think anything is worth a try at this point. If this is a security leak then we need to take all possible measures to stop it." Borin looked at Ben. "I think we've met, but I'm not sure. Commander Danz Borin, at your service."

"Ben Zwycky. Nice to meet you," said Ben while shaking Borin's hand.

"Well, I think I'll contact Ristar and see if he wants to bring his boys in on it," said Tringad, sipping his drink. "Ben, have a seat, man."

"Don't mind if I do." Ben sat down across from Borin, and looked at Tringad. "While you do that, I'll call up Briggs and Elworthy."

Tringad put down his drink. "Sounds like we've got ourselves a plan, I just hope it works."

{rp off}

Ben, I'm planning something special, I'll email you.

Guest Cmdr Josh Dilvorn

Commander Josh Dilvorn had just taken the last sip of his third cup of black coffee when the comm speakers in the lounge came to life, "Ensign Young to Commander Dilvorn."

"Dilvorn here" the commander replied.

"Renegade station should be within visual range in a few moments, sir" the navigations officer reported.

"Acknowleged ensign. I'm on my way to the bridge now. Dilvorn out." Dilvorn had stood and was heading for the door even before he had finished speaking to the ensign.

Moments later as he appeared on the bridge and crossed to his chair, the commander turned to the communications officer, "Lieutenant Peale, inform the station of our approach and request docking access. Also inform them that we wish to have our reactor upgraded."

"Aye, sir." she replied.

Dilvorn then tapped a key on his console and the bridge viewer switched to external view. In this mode it could easily be mistaken for a window due to the extremly high resolution and clarity. Just to the left of center a small speck could be seen which was most likely Renegage station. "What is our ETA on the staion?" enquired the commander.

"Just over 4 minutes, sir."

Dilvorn sat back into his chair and watched as the speck gradually grew larger and larger. Then the communications officer spoke, "Sir, Renegade has cleared us to dock. We are to procede to docking port three upon arrival."

Minutes later the Conquest quietly glided through the opening of Renegade station. The docking tractors guiding the ship toward docking port three. Dilvorn opened a channel to engineering, "Chief Henrick, cut power to the main engine and prepare to transfer to station power once we are docked. Then take the reactor offline and shut down all non-essential systems."

"Aye sir, I would like to request permission to supervise the reactor upgrade aswell, sir" came the reply from the chief.

Dilvorn smiled as he gave his answer, "Permission granted chief. Dilvorn out."

The commander then turned to the comms officer, "Lieutenant, open a shipwide broadcast channel."

"Channel open sir."

The commander stood up from his chair before addressing the entire crew, "All hands, non-essential and off duty personnel are granted temporary shore leave to Renegade station."

Dilvorn then noticed that they were in position, "Ensign Young, secure all morings and connect airlocks one and three."

"Aye sir. Moorings secure, airlocks are open."

"Very well," replied the commander, "bridge dismissed."

Within a few moments everyone had made there way off the bridge. Dilvorn reached across to his console and locked out the bridge consoles. He then left the bridge, securing the door on his way out.

A few minutes later, Dilvorn walked through the entrance to the bar. He glanced quickly around the room. Noticing a few of his crew already enjoying the station's facilities. He then noticed two familiar faces. Ben Zwycky and Alun Tringad. Even though he hadn't actually met commander Tringad in person before, Dilvorn recognised him from his files. Ben Zwycky, on the other hand, he had met before on Orion station. Dilvorn walked over to their table, noticing another commander that he didn't recognise. Dilvorn managed to catch the end of something that Alun was saying, "...I just hope it works."

"Did I miss anything?" asked Dilvorn.

"We were discussing an abmormality in this report" replied Ben, motioning to the datapad laying on the table.

"Do you mind if I take a look at that?"

"Go for it." answered Alun, sliding the report across the table toward Dilvorn.

As he went over it Ben spoke, "Notice how there's a page missing?"

Dilvorn nodded, "Yes, that's quite strange indeed."

"We were just about to get some computer experts from my crew to run a residual data analysis on it."

"Sounds like the best bet to me, let me know if I can help you with anything."

"...let me know if I can help you with anything," said Dilvorn.

"Sure," replied Tringad, "By the way, how is the newest member of the ISS Command staff? I don't think we've ever met in person before."

{rp off}

Well, I think this earns me the "shortest RP post ever" award, but I've gotta jet.

[rp]"Well, gentlemen, How did the tests come up?"

"Negative"

"Nothing?"

"Well, it's not been tampered with, or copied or transmitted anywhere, so as far as we can tell this document hasn't been leaked, but not that it didn't deserve to be."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, whoever administered this document should be sacked. They didn't validate the contents of the report, obey standard encryption procedures, or check on the location where it should be sent. In an intelligence organisation, or any organisation, that's very slack security."

"I guess the reorganisation on the fleet has taken its toll on the administration side of things."

"I would suggest the fleet needs to review its security procedures, and do a thorough analysis on all important documents to check for leaks. You know the old saying 'Where there's lax security, there's someone taking advantage of it.'"

"Yes, I see. I'll have to pass on your recommendations to the fleet commander."[/rp]

Well, I hope you don't mind my little twist there, Alun. I think it throws the story open to more people (if Ristar recommends a fleetwide security sweep smile.gif)
