SS Vulture

Time unknown

What else can go wrong today? Wait..don't ask that...where's Murphy when you need him?

The arrival of...Akuma Is that her name? Too tired. Need sleep caused even more chaos...her speech caused some people to quiet down and generally people cooled off. EarthCOM thinks their on the ball, eh? They've botched so many spec-ops it's not funny.

"Defcon" muttered,"This is worse than "hell week"...at least you could take your frustrations out on something. Same with SEER." How much longer is this going to go on? I hope they realize that the longer they wait to end this, the less support their going to get.

The UCV Susceptor hovered outside of Pixan Spacestation, awaiting the departure of the SS Vulture. Silent and cloaked the battlecruiser was seemingly one with space itself.

Commander Stone sat alone in his quarters, a cup a scotch sitting aimlessly on the table. He stared at his scotch, it was his third glass. After he stared the glass down for awhile he decided that drinking himself stupid wouldn't solve anything and poured the contents of the glass down the sink.

Normally Zeke wouldn't feel so bad about the loss of a crew member, but he had known Jet for a while and had no idea what caused his death. Zeke feared for his own life as well, what if it was some sort of contajent.

"Medical Officer to Commander Stone." the intercom sounded.

"Stone here. What is it?"

"There is something down here I think you should see."

"I'll be right there."

Stone stood and walked out the door. He was hoping they had found the cause of Jet's sudden death.

In the medibay he saw Jet's corpse laying there on an operating table with his Cheif medical officer standing over it.

"What is it?" Zeke demanded.

"Well Sir, while I was beginning to cut open the corpse I found that I could not do so, and did not need to anyway."

"What do you mean?"

The Medical Officer stuck his finger in the corpses belly button, there was a click and then he pulled the chest open. The corpses insides did not contain blood and veins, but microchips and wires. Jet was an android of some sort, made by who knows who.

"My science officer was an android and I didn't even know," Zeke said, more to himself than anyone else.

"Sort of, more of a cyborg actually. I scanned him and discovered he has a quite human brain, slightly modified to fit into this body. The reason he suddenly collapsed was the same reason our Nuclear Reactor went offline. His nuclear reactor went unstable and eventually shut down completely. I can bring him back to 'life' simply by installing a miniature nuclear reactor. Problem is finding one that will fit."

"I'll get the cheif engineer to work on that. Tell me, how long has he been alive?" Zeke wondered.

"If my scans are correct, over 500 years. Although I do not know who made him and for what purpose. He may have designed the body himself as a way to keep himself alive longer." the cheif medical officer said excitedly.

"Good job, I well be back for an update later, but I have things to do now." Zeke finished and then turn and left the room. His first stop was engineering, he didn't even know if one could buy a reactor that small but he was going to get one if he had to build it himself.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been meaning to post for quite some time now, but I have just gotten a little caught up with life in general( Yes I DO have a life outside of the computer). Not to mention it seems as if this thread could use a bit of life. biggrin.gif

/rp on

His head ached, and he didn't know where he was. Forcing his eyes open in the bright lights, he looked around. All he could see was white, blurred white at that he though ruefully. He shook his head in an attempt to make the scene clearer. Supprisingly it helped, albeit just a little. Gingerly he tried moving his arm; he felt the aching drain away as it moved. Slowly he tested each limb assessing his condition. By this time his mind was fully alert and he recognized the room he was in as a medbay. Dimly he thought back on the events of the past few hours putting all of the pieces back together. He remembered the small fight outside the Vulture and cracked a thin smile as he remembered the big merc going down and the sharp pain in his leg.

Hofmann sat up and swung himself off of the small bed. Looking around the room once more he spotted his armour. He walked over and began dressing himself in the hardened, form-fitting armour. He had only to put on his helmet when he heard the door open;he spun around and quickly snapped to attention when he saw his visitor.

"At ease, marine." Commodore Kyle Antilles said calmly. He continued, "How is the leg, when we brought you in here the meds said that you were lucky that the armour took most of the blast. Still, they decided it was enough to knock you out for a few hours."

"Yes, Sir." Hofmann coldly replied. At least that explained his skewerd vision.

As the exited the medbay, Hofmann saw the merc he had taken down. He allowed himself another half smile and resumed his position beside Commodore Antilles. Not long after they entered the briefing room, and resumed their places.

I don't know how many of you may remember me, but I was once a tiny part of this forum... I'm hoping to get back into it soon if I can (with the release of the BCM beta I've managed to re-immerse myself in the BC universe), but it's really more a matter of if I will have the time. In any case, I'll be watching to see how things have changed in the years I've been gone...

Modified LRT-15 Transport S.S Vulture

Command Deck

The briefing had taken significantly longer than anticipated, although in reflection, Savage concluded that an over run due to the unique circumstances they were all presented with shouldnÔÇÖt have been entirely unexpected. As things presently stood, the unlikely saviours of humanity had been allowed the luxury of being shown to their shared staterooms, with the less than generous refreshments and in ship communications available only on demand. What further infuriated them was the fact that ship access out of their staterooms was restricted to an ill equipped recreation room and a canteen designed for no more than ten persons at any one time. However, what irritated them the most was the constant merc presence that guarded over them, brutal looking energy weapons always at the ready and the kind of ill advised look that suggested they were happy to, perhaps even eager, to use them.

As they had been made aware, Savage was quite serious in his threat that he would have any one of them shot where they stood for stepping out of line. This made some, if not all of them, feel more like prisoners than comrades. Moral at this point was understandably low, and considering how little they had really been told of the situation, it wasnÔÇÖt likely to improve any time soon.

ÔÇ£You look troubled.ÔÇØ Said Reynolds to his commanding officer. ÔÇ£Not to mention tired, sir.ÔÇØ

Savage didnÔÇÖt disagree with him. ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs been a long few days.ÔÇØ Replied Savage. ÔÇ£And itÔÇÖs gonna get even longer still.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£But why so troubled? Everything has gone to plan, so far.ÔÇØ

Savage smirked at his communications officer. ÔÇ£You noticed that too, huh? Worries the hell out of me that does Pete. Things are going according to plan. Too well according to plan if you ask me.ÔÇØ

Reynolds frowned. ÔÇ£It does happen you know sir. Not every operation has to go pear shaped. Besides, itÔÇÖs still early days yet, sir. Im willing to bet your disaster is just around the corner somwhere.ÔÇØ

Savage raised an eyebrow to Reynolds. ÔÇ£Thanks Reynolds, you always know what to say to make me feel worse than I did already.ÔÇØ

Reynolds smiled. ÔÇ£Anytime sir. Oh, and while I think about it, you might wanna have a chat with Rattler before we head out system. He pulled me up just after the broke the briefing and went to the bridge.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£Oh?ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£He, ah, didnÔÇÖt look his normal, cheerful self, if you know what I mean, sir.ÔÇØ

Savage nodded. ÔÇ£I know what you mean. Where is he?ÔÇØ

Reynolds stepped to his left and quickly began tapping into one of the few bridge terminals that seemed to function. ÔÇ£Deck 2, subsection 5. The head, sir.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£Hmm. Too much fibre in his diet. IÔÇÖll go and have a word. You have the bridge, Reynolds.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£Aye sir!ÔÇØ

With that, Savage turned on the spot and began making the short trip to the bridges exit. Just before he left, he felt the surge of the ships engines kick up a notch and send them faster into the void ahead. He checked his watch, and mentally calculated how long still remained before the rendevous.

Six hours. Better get some sleep while I still can. After I deal with Rattler.

Stepping through the door and dismissing his merc escort, Savage made his way down to deck 2, subsection 5 and some sort of showdown with Insurgent One.

[/RP]

Good god itÔÇÖs been a while since IÔÇÖve been able to do this. With any luck, I should be able to keep on posting without too much distraction for a good time to come. However, we need to get this beast back on track properly, so hop to it chaps ÔÇô This war is only just beginning.

SS Vulture

The hot sun blazed overhead, baking the ground. Nimitz was in a shed, a Hummer parked outside. He was the only one left in his squad. He knew the insurgents were coming for him. Nimitz checked his extra ammo and his shotgun's magazine. "Nothing's going right on this! Was there a traitor? Suddenly a man burst into the shed. Nimitz quickly brought his shotgun to bear and fired a slug, the small piece of metal whipped through the atmosphere and ble through the man's armor and his heart. He looked surprised and died that way. Suddenly Nimitz heard the faint sound of a shuttle. "It's the evac! I'm going to get out of here!" A SAM flew through the air and impacted the middle of the shuttle, it crashed, turning itself into scrap. Suddenly he felt a pain in his leg as he collapsed to the floor. "Is this how it's going to end? He leveled his shotgun and the door and waited. A person appeared in the doorway. The shotgun went off with a *Boom* knocking the man backwards. He tried to fire his shotgun again. S*it! It's jammed! Nimitz reached for his sidearm but never reached it as a man jumped on him and stuck his knife into his guts...

Nimitz popped up looking around the room and feeling for the mortal wound. It was just a dream... A man cleared his throat. Nimitz turned and identified him as a medic. "You gave me quiet a scare when you screamed. I haven't seen anyone's vitals shoot up like that for a long time." Nimitz merely nodded his head. "Is there anything I can get you," the medic asked. Nimitz took a deep breath, "No thank you. I'll be just fine." The medic shrugged and left the room. Just fine my a*s! When are you going to stop having nightmares? And not just about that operation too! Nimitz shuddered and was about to fall back to sleep when his door opened. A man aimed a handgun at Nimitz and closed the door behind him. "You will remain quiet or I will kill you." Nimtiz suddenly started sweating again Oh sh*t! Who is this guy!?

Modified LRT-15 Transport S.S Vulture

Room ST-9

After the dismal briefing, Liev was escorted by one of the mercs to his temporary quaters on board the Vulture. Given the size of the cabin, however, it might have been more appropriate to call it an eigths. And legroom was not the only creature comfort this yacht, oh no! As he was shown his room his escort mumbled something about a rec room and bar. Finding these two establishments proved no problem, as they were contained in the rooms that were not locked.

"Why so much security?", Liev wondered. "Most of these rooms are probably just empty staterooms, anyways." He considered breaking into one when he found the recreation room.

Using the word "recreation" in the most highly imgainative sense. Such heady pleasures as v-cards and Whack-A-Marn were offered, as well as a very decrepit comscreen, which by the looks if it could only pick up sub-hyperspace channels, if it was turned on, which it wasn't. And, yes, the power converter inside the babblebox had been dismatled. Looking across the glorious joys the before him, Liev decided to go to the bar.

At least it held more truth to it's name. A hip-high table about 6 feet long streched the length of the room. Peering at the grimy menu pad, Liev decided to get something light and ordered a neat Credian whisky. To his dismay he watched the auto-bar prepare a heavily watered down drink, and spit it out onto into the stained stainless steel mug. After taking a sip, Liev decided the recycled toiled water in his room would be more refreshing. He emptied his cup and procceded back to his room.

That was sonmething Liev never got. Back on Centris he would occasionally recive a black ops of one flavor or another, but was always well provided for (clean hotel room, decent transportation, manservent, ect.), but Galcom seemed to delight in putting its most valuable agents in the most disgusting pithouses in the galaxy. He did acknowledge that this mission was on a shoestring, but couldn't the Fleet Commander (or even Rattler, for crying out loud!) arange for something at least livable? Perhaps the tradition of destitution in spying was so ingrained in the Galcom tradition (and wasn't Rattler once a Galcomer too?) that it never even occured to either of them to hold this little coup on a hot luxury liner, or a civilian rent-a-cruiser?

But, of nothing. At least there was air (albiet stale, and the sounds the recuirculater made in his room made it dubious wheter this condition would continue), and the plethora of mercs at all hours insured Liev's security. But there was always one thing about mercanaries that Liev could never forget when he delt with them: they always went for the highest bidder.

He reached his quarters. After making a quick inspection, Liev found a well stocked library on the computer (to his great surprise), told the ship to beep him at 0600 (plenty, he only needed three hours of sleep), and settled down to the soft chords of the Tramis Flugal Quartet.

"Come this way towards your room" I followed the merc, taking carefull note were I was and made little indeinty marks to the imangary map I was keeping in my brain. We finnaly got to the end of the line and I walk into my quaters, I swore when the side of my head bang agasint the frame of the door, I looked inside nothing speical, just an standard room, I shruged and sat down on the bed took out one of the cigars I had bought on my short stay on Earth lit it, and began to read an book I bought along with the cigars Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged I put all the focused on the book for the while......

Captain's Quarters, UCV Susceptor

Zeke sat in a comfortable chair and re-established the link to his drone onboard the SS Vulture. He was glad to see the blurred image re-appear, he had half expected it to have been destroyed by now.

The drone was still on the ceiling of the briefing room, Zeke immediatly dropped from the ceiling and took flight. Out the door and into the hallway, noticing several people walking about the ship. The Mercs seemed almost nervous, they had their jobs cut out for them now.

He followed one Merc who seemed to be following someone else, attempting to be silent and stealthy which he failed at miserably. The person the Merc was following Occasionally looked back, checking to see if the Merc was still there.

He flew past this scene and turned into a turboshaft that someone was just getting off of. The drone landing on an access panel and interfaced with it. Now he was on his way to the bridge...

"Zeke we've been cloaked to long, if we don't shut down now there is a risk of radiation leaks." the voice of Jake Burke announced over the intercom.

"Decloak, but leave us on passive radar and try not to be make it too obvious that we are following them."

Zeke accessed the computer again, trying to open the turbolift door but before he could the door opened and Karl Savage stepped inside. Flying to the roof of the lift he decided to see what the Fleet Commander was up to now.

Engineering, UCV Susceptor

Chief Engineer Jesse Black stared blankly at the young engineer in front of her. She walked over and sat down on a stool, then returned her gaze to the engineer.

"Jet is a what?" she asked for the third time.

"An Android Ma'am. I saw it with my own..."

"And Zeke wants me to build a small Nuclear Reactor to power Jet's body?" Jesse interrupted.

"Yes, the size equivilant to a human heart."

She stared at him again, then turned to the computer. Running some more tests while she let this new information sink in.

"We'll have to do it after we get done running the tests on this new Reactor. I don't want it blowing up in our faces. Now go down to subdeck tunnel 5 and see if everything is operating there." Jesse ordered.

The engineer was just turning into a hallway when there was the sound of an energy weapon firing. The engineer was knocked backwards and fell to the ground. Jesse looked up to see five intruders entering engineering. She immediatly ducked behind the terminal she was using.

More firing and several other engineers were knocked to the ground, others were running for nearby exits and taking any cover they could find. A Pilot who was trying to get a better missile load on his interceptor pulled out his sidearm and, taking cover behind the reactor itself, began to fire back at the intruders.

"Intruder alert! Teams Delta and Bravo intercept at once!" the intercom bellowed.

The intruders stupidly began to fire at the pilot. The reactors newly installed sheild lit up as the weapons fire exploded against it. Shooting back, the pilot hit one of the intruders right in the head but in the proccess his gun was shoot to the floor.

Two Marines entered and opened fire on the intruders. With the element of surprise on their side they managaed to take down, but not kill, another intruder. Now the intruders weren't so cocky and hid behind a computer terminal. The Marines didn't care, they shot at the terminal and it exploded into sparks sending two of the intruders sailing into the air.

Four More Marines entering from behind the intruders and successful tackled and captured the two that had fallen. The remaining intruder dove behind a different computer terminal.

Jesse jumped at the sight of the intruder and then froze at the sight of the gun. The Intruder seemed equally as surprised and almost shot her, then he realized that would be foolish. He had a much better chance of surviving if he used her as a hostage.

He grabbed Jesse roughly and stood up with her facing the now eight Marines in engineering.

"Drop your weapons or she dies!" the intruder yelled.

The Marines stood their ground.

"Throw down your weapon!" one of them demanded.

"I'm walking out of here!" the intruder yelled desparately and began to back towards the door. The Marines did not follow.

Suddenly, there was a thump and the intruder went limp and fell to the floor. Jesse looked and spotted a knife in the side of his head. Jake walked back out of the room, on his way back to the bridge.

0300 hrs. 19 May, 3008

Secret EarthCOM Facility

Peace was fading. The black void slowly lightened just as sound began to invade his universe. The regular beat of a drum brought a dull pain. A warm metalic taste played in his mouth.

Akira could just make out the humanoid figure slowly coming into focus. He strained trying to make sense of what he was experiencing. In a moment peacefully blissful ignorance left and was replaced. The lights shown bright and he understood the patient glare of the man in front of him.

"Good. I was concerned that weren't able to handle as much pain as we expected." The man flicked an invisible something from his knee. "I've found that a good deal of pain is fairly effective at getting to information. It seems, however, that you have found a way around the influence of my machinations. Would you care to share your techniques?"

"No," Akira's word was strained and gruff. A spray of blood escaped with his answer.

"Come now, Akira. Consider it a professional courtesy from one spook to another. We are in this together, you and I. Your performance directly reflects on me. So, you will understand why I am concerned when you atempt to circumvent my work."

"No," Akira's voice cracked as it left his dry throat. Blood from his mouth was trickling down his throat and drying.

"That didn't sound very healthy. Perhaps some food and water would liven you up." The man tapped at his ear and sub-vocalized a command. "There. Refreshments are on their way. We'll have a bite and drink in about an hour.In the mean time, I have some water here. You tell me how and I'll let you drink now."

Akira knew he needed the water. Humans can typically go without water for four days. Some reports put that at a week, but only in perfect conditions. It'd been four days since he gulped the small amount from the toilet in his cell. It wasn't an ideal source of water, but it was all he had. Surprisingly, he didn't get sick. But he knew he wouldn't last much longer without a drink.

The blood in his mouth was thick and pastey now. The information his interogater wanted wasn't really important. It was merely a tool Akira used to counter the interogation. During training at GALCOM, officers were taught that if captured do everything you can to escape. If you can't then do what you can to cooperate minimally. Take what was offered and give out information when you needed to. Codes could be changed; plans altered; positions moved. The information you had was not as important as staying alive.

Akira had come to disagree with that last part. The information he had was more important than his life. But, it was still early in the game and his captor needed something.

"The technique is simple." His voice sounded as if he had rocks in his throat. "A budhist mediation technique," he coughed. Dry red patches landed on the floor in front of him. "They use it to reach a higher plain of existance. Another realm I was told. I merely use the same technique to heighten how my brain perceives the pain. Endorphins release and I achieve a deep sleep something like a mild coma."

"Interesting. Self-induced coma brought about by a chemical response to pain. Very ingenious. But, the human mind is capable of many things. Once when I was interogating a mercenary..." Akira could see this was going to be another diatribe.

"The water, please."

"Oh, yes, right. Sorry about that. I tend to get a bit involved in my work." The man reached behind him and grabbed a plastic cup. "Here, delivered as promised."

Akira threw back the entire cup. He immediately bent over and wrenched the liquid from his stomach. The vomit spalshed onto the man's shoes.

"Damnit, man, control yourself! Do you know how hard it is to find good shoes in this part of space!"

"Urine," Akira weezed between the dry heaves.

"Urine?" The man turned around and grabbed a second plastic cup. He sniffed and sipped the liquid. "Damn, you're right. I must have grasped your last urine sample by mistake." Akira was double over on the floor. "Unfortunately, I now need this water to clean up your mess. Really, had you just held yourself together you would have been fine. It's very hard to poison yourself with your own urine."

That was all Akira could take for the day. his mind began to shut down involuntarily this time.

"Damnit, not again," The man said disgustingly as he planted his boot into Akira's stomach. "Get up man. You are better than this. I've seen children take more than you!" He was begining to scream now as he planted more kicks to Akira's mid section. But it was too late.

Akira knew they'd have to take him to medical and rehydrate and nourish him. He let the black peace spread over him in a wave knowing that he'd won this minor battle. One at a time. Just one at a time and I will survive he thought as he sunk back into nirvana.

SS VUlture

The man kept his gun trained on Nimitz. "I'm doing this for two reasons. One, for the money and two because you killed my brother."

I'm going to have to time this carefully. The man babbled on about something, the only word Nimitz caught was "honor". Great. Now if I can just get to my belt.

Nimitz slowly reached for his belt and felt the knife in it. Slowly withdrawing it, he hide the knife behind him. It's been a while since I've thrown a knife, I hope the old reflexes are still here. The man walked forward, Nimitz took a glance at the gun Silenced 9mm. It's the cheap model so I might have a chance if he misses his first shots. Nimitz smiled, "Excuse me." "What," replied the man. Nimitz quickly held the knife in his right hand in the position he was taught. He quickly estimated distance and let go. The knife however, fell down quicker than anticipated and it planted itself in the man's shooting arm. He looked at Nimitz with shock in his eyes. Nimitz quickly jumped up and released a desperate kick, it connected with his head and fell backwards, unconcious.

That was close, Nimitz thought as suddenly he got the shakes and sweat started to drench his shirt, That was too close. He looked around the room for something to tie the guy up with. Wait a minute, call security first

Nimitz walked over to the intercom and selected security. "Security." Nimitz cleared his throat, "I have a intruder in my room and I would appreciate if you would come and collect him." The sound of the man talking over the radio came through over the intercom and then he started talking, "Two men are on their way now. They should be there in about two minutes." He almost turned off the intercom but added, "Your going to have some questions to answer. Out"

Akuma sat staring out at the stars. The Insurgent One badge clasped tightly in one hand. The other held out palm up. She looked down at the burn marks. "I should have had this looked at..."

She clenched the hand with a grimmace then turned away from the beautiful gas cloud to sit on her unmade bed.

The sheets were thrown on the floor and the only real thing that remained in place was her pillow. She took this now and hugged it tightly. "Akira."

She slumped a little more so that the pillow lay on her legs. "Who knows what's happening to him." She smothers her face in the pillow. "This is all my fault!"

Looking over at the broken image of her brother she throws the pillow against the wall and stands.

Looking up at the flourescent lights of the roof she lets out a howl of rage. First they black mail me into using me to get control of Akira, and they use my Uncle to persuade me! I was stupid enough to try and kill myself... I wish I had! I've fallen in love with my Fleet Commander...I know that is only going to hurt me more, and now earth is going to be destroyed and this is all my fault! ALL my fault!

She whirls around and slams her fists against the closed door letting out another moan of hate and anger.

Reaching out feebly she taps on a comms unit and speaks quietly. "Can you please inform Commander Savage that I need him in my quarters immedietly." Without waiting for a reply she flicks the unit off then returns to gazing at the stars.

"All my fault." A tear sparkles in the flickering of the flourecent lights.

The briefing was over, and I'd been wandering the very few halls that we "civilians" were permitted access to for so long that I'd lost track of time. It might as well have been several hours. As it turned out, it had only been about ten minutes. Deep thought will do that to a person.

I was tired of waiting. Blades had left without a word, and what I had to say was too important to wait. To me, it was important enough that getting shot would be a small price to pay.

I left the stateroom and walked down the hall. I reached the point of no return, where the "civilians" were not allowed to go...

And crossed the line.

(RP off)

Just a small post for now. I'll send you the big one in a few hours, Blades. Please take a look and let me know if it is satisfactory.

Feels good to be back!

Blades came around the corner, on his way to the head, it seemed, when he finally saw me. He must not have recognized me for a moment, as he looked about ready to call for one of the mercenaries to have me shot.

Good thing he recognized me a second later.

"Foss, how the hell did you get into this section?"

"Trust me, sir, you don't want to know."

"What are you doing here? I thought my orders were clear!"

I shrugged. "Well, since you made us all civilians, it can't really be termed as an order, sir. However, that's not why I'm here, and if you want to find out before I get shot on sight, I strongly suggest that we talk in private somewhere. Now."

A look of annoyance flashed across the Orion Fleet Commander's face. Finally, he nodded, and gestured for me to follow.

He led me to the ready room. The door closed behind us, and he turned, his face in mine.

"You'd better have one hell of a good explanation, Foss, and make it fast! If anyone else saw you, I could have a mutiny within the hour!"

"Frankly, sir, you'll be lucky to have a ship in an hour if you don't listen to me right now."

That stopped him. I could tell he was interested now. I took the liberty of pacing around the small room.

"There's a funny thing about medical records, sir. The computers occasionally have trouble logging the current status of various patients. In particular, military officers. It's been known to happen in the past, that an officer would be discharged before a doctor has officially released them. Those inconsistencies are fairly easy to spot, because there is one thing that a computer can't mess up on. It's also something that can't be hacked into."

Blades wasn't following. "What does this have to do with anything?"

I continued, not answering his question. "What cannot be hacked into are the psyche evaluations, which each officer must pass before they can be released. Every medical computer was upgraded with a new program to look for a psyche evaluation on each Galcom officer that is in a given facility. If it does not find one, or an evaluation that clearly shows an officer is unfit for duty, they won't be released by accident."

"Foss," Blades said, his voice low and dangerous. "If you don't get to the point real quick, I'll throw you out the airlock myself!"

"I checked Akuma's file before I left for this little rendezvous. I noticed something rather odd."

Blades' face was deadpan. "Really. What was that?"

I shot him a look. "You want me to spell it out? Fine! There's no way that Rattler could have gotten her out of there. That leaves one person. You pulled the string, this time. You had the doc release Akuma into your custody, then file a fake report saying that she had passed the psyche evaluation and was fit for duty. The problem is that you and her left a full hour before that evaluation was logged into the computer. The error has been corrected, and there's no trace of it now. I only know because I was keeping an eye on her, and I covered your arse by not telling anyone higher up."

Blades turned away, not saying a word.

"Sir, she is not fit to be serving aboard the bridge of this ship. She tried to kill herself, for crying out loud! You may have cleared her as far as the paperwork goes, but the fact still remains that she is not fit for duty!"

Nothing. Not a peep. I decided to try plan B.

"Did you have some problem on the way over here, sir?"

He turned around, and looked me in the eyes with a questioning gaze. "What? No, we didn't. What does that have to do with anything?"

I nodded, casually turning away. I examined an imaginary rust mark on the wall. "I was just wondering where she got the scar on her hand."

I'll be damned if he didn't find that one interesting! Through the corner of my eye, I saw him stiffen abruptly. "What the hell are you talking about, Commander?"

I tossed the item, which landed squarely in his hand. He looked at it for a moment, but not long enough to identify it. "What's this?"

"It's a tissue regenerator. Don't ask how I got it. You don't want to know that, either. It's used to treat burns, mostly."

"How do you know she didn't just go to the medical bay when she got aboard? She had time before the briefing."

"Well, the thing is that anyone with more than three years of medical experience can handle them flawlessly. You could always check with your medical staff. But if you've got someone on your medical team who is capable of the mistakes I saw, fire them."

"What are you talking about, Foss?"

"The academy's Accelerated Command Training Program is designed to get soldiers into a command position as fast as possible. You may recall that I was one of the first people to take that program."

He nodded.

"I was the chief medical officer aboard the Kev's Star before I was asked to take that program. It covers basic medical skills, designed to crudely put someone back together until a medical team can arrive. It doesn't cover reconstructive surgery. There are small, but noticeable mistakes that inexperienced people make with that instrument. Not life threatening, and the only reason I noticed it is because I know what to look for. Seeing as there are no medics on Orion capable of making that kind of mistake, and there was no mention of any permanent scaring anywhere on her body, I can only assume that this is recent. It's something that happened after you left Orion HQ. Or, at the very least, after she was discharged. Not only that, but there was clearly no attempt to have the tissue repaired properly."

I turned around, facing him again. "She did a good enough job that no one would notice unless they knew what to look for, which means that she didn't want anyone to know about it!"

"So what do you expect me to do about it, Foss? I can't just..."

I wasn't ready to let him take control of the conversation without saying everything. "Hear me out, sir. The problem with the ACTP is that it invariably puts people in command who have had little, if any command experience. They are usually just as new to the idea of combat as well. This is an even worse situation, sir. This is not only an officer who is inexperienced, but she has also been reinstated to active duty, officially or otherwise, without a proper medical evaluation. That is, so far, the greatest danger to this operation."

"So, what do you suggest, then, Dr. Foss?"

"I don't know what your medical staff is like, sir. But I do know that I won't be able to handle being a civilian. That hasn't sat well with me since my parents were killed. And besides that, the bottom line is that you need someone in that medical bay who can clear Akuma for active service. I don't know about the medical staff you have aboard this ship, sir, but I'm pretty sure they aren't Galcom. I am certified to conduct psyche evaluations, and all examinations required to determine an officer's physical and mental fitness for duty."

"You're asking me to make you the CMO of this ship."

"Yes, sir. That's exactly what I'm asking."

"And if we get into serious trouble, how do I know that you'll work just as hard to save an Insurgent's life as a Galcom officer's?"

For a moment, I couldn't believe what I'd just heard. Putting my feelings aside, I answered in as simple a way as I could.

"I've taken the Hippocratic oath, sir. You know my feelings about the Insurgents. I'm as tired of this cold war as everyone else is. If I weren't interested in helping out for the greater good, sir, I wouldn't be here talking to you. It doesn't matter to me if they are Insurgent or Galcom. If someone's bleeding when they enter my medical bay, I do everything I can to keep them alive. I may have spent the last eight years out of the loop, sir, but only a fool would assume that I didn't keep up with the developments in medical research. Rest assured, sir, I won't let you down on this mission. I know as well as you do that we can't allow this war to escalate."

He sighed, then lowered his head a moment, weighing the consequences. After a moment, he looked back up at me. "All right, Foss. I'll let you have it on one condition."

"Name it, sir."

He fixed me with a no-nonsense stare. "You get Akuma back on her feet before this mission gets ugly."

"You've got it, sir. In fact, I've already got an idea for that. Do you have any records from the Gammulan invasion eight years ago?"

"Yes... I thought this was an evaluation, not a history lesson."

"Trust me. What about records from the Deterrence's first mission?"

"I don't think so. A majority of that... mission... was classified by security. I don't like the idea of having some merc dig up information on that."

"No problem." I said simply.

"What have you got in mind?"

I merely smiled...

Akuma sat back down on the now totally stripped bed examining her scarred hand. "Damn." She muttered. "Damn damn damn I should have just let it get infected. I wish I wasn't even alive. Ayia this isn't fair."

She raises her other hand the glint of steel flit accross the scar as she examined the finely sharpened knife. "Maybe if I cut it a little bit and let it..." She paused.

"What am I stupid?" She sighed then and with a more determined look on her face stabbed the thing into her matress. "DAMN IT!"

She pulled the thing out and stabbed it over and over again imagining it was the man who had come to her that late evening and threatened her life and her uncles. She screamed as she imagined him spraying blood, screaming in agony, like she has so many times.

She ripped the matress apart and turned around looking for another earthcom agent. This time she found the pillow. Again enacting the violence feathers flew everywhere.

She turned again towards the door this time took aim and threw it with all of her rage, strength and sorrow behind it. It sunk into the metal door like a hot knife through butter then she collapsed in a ball in the corner...

...Just sobbing for there were no more tears to shed.

SS Vulture

Nimitz put on his uniform and cleaned up what little mess he had made in his room.Damn! They'll know I brought a weapon on board! Oh well, better get ready for the s**t to hit the fan

He took his knife out of the man's body, but he didn't see a nametag. After bandaging up the man's wound, he bound his his wrists and ankles and waited for security. After about 10 minutes of waiting he went back over to the comms system and called security again.

"Security speaking"

"Hello, this Nimtiz speaking, I have a intruder in my room and I was told that some security would be arriving at my room about 10 minutes ago."

"I'll check on it."

The merc closed the line and laughed to himself as he went back to his poker game Some things never change

In his room Nimitz waited and was thinking about calling one of the leaders.....

The 'meeting' with Foss had wound Savage up more than he had let on. Leaving him to continue with his journey down to see Rattler, he quickly paged the bridge to find out if the Insurgencys number one had concluded his business in the head.

'Uh, yes sir.' said Reynolds. 'He left .... a good few minutes ago. You get lost?'

Savage sighed. 'No, I got sidetracked. Where is he now?'

Reynolds was silent for a moment. 'I believe he's on his way down to one of the guest quaters with a security escort.'

'What?'

Reynolds explained. 'Security was summoned a few minutes ago. Somthing is up with one of our recruits. Rattlers taking the lead.'

Savage shook his head. 'Wonderful. Any other surprises for me?'

'None so far, sir. I'll bleep you should a planet explode or somthing.'

With that, Savage cut the link and beat his fists against the bulkhead in frustration.

Im starting to think this was a very bad idea, he said to himself. Maybe I should abort this little escapade before we get into any more trouble?

On que, the other voice in his head interupted. Dont be an idiot, theres too much at stake.

Savage blinked and ordered his brain to shut the hell up.

This is starting to happen all too often. Maybe when this is all over, Im gonna take that vacation with Neena I promised myself ...

Pulling away from the bulkhead, he did an abrupt about turn and headed towards the crew quaters, hoping to intercept Rattler and the merc security guards before they got to wherever it was they were going.

He almsot made it. He arrived in the correct section, saw the shadows of several men just dissapear around a corridor and was about to quick step after them when a crash from a room to his right caught his attention. Stopping, he quickly looked at nameplate on the stateroom door and dropped his head in despair.

Now what the hell is she up to?

Using his security overide protocols, he forced the door open and stepped into the darkened room. The moment the closed behind him, he could sense his troubled officers presence.

'Whats going on, Akuma?'

Over to you sweetheart. smile.gif

Akuma shrank further into the corner. "Just...Just go away." she whispers.

As Blades walked into the room the lights came on slightly, enough that he could survey the damage and see Akuma in the corner hugging her knees...Looking very mentally unstable indeed.

"I'm sorry just go away." She closes her eyes. "I shouldn't be here, not when I feel this way about you...It's my fault. All of this is my fault Karl."

Seeming like a totally different person the woman stands up her shoulder hunched and her face set in deep sorrow but for some reason or another no tears yet. Definetly not the person that Blades had met in the Bar for the first time so long ago.

She turns to look out the window her shoulders shaking with fear and sobs. "I'm an idiot. I should be back on earth. I'm not fit to be a commander....Look at me Karl..."

She whirls around spreading her arms the insurgent badge still clutched in her hand. "Look at me!!!!"

I had just begun John Galt's long speech about the state of the world, and decided to find where I could get something to drink when I step outside my little cabin, and saw several burly mercs in the trail end of some group make an turn down my corridror, I shruged having nothing better to do and decided to follow them quietly.....

Well Foss, I had the following in mind for a while now... with your "promotion", things just get more interesting....

[rp]

01:30 hrs, 19th May, 3008

Modified LRT-15 Transport S.S. Vulture

The briefing over Wold noticed a young looking merc working her way towards him. About half way around the room a big burly merc who looked as if most of his battles had been fought using his face, touches her elbo. A brief, but animated discussion ensues. The female merc gives a brief shrug as the conversation ends and heads off in a different direction. Mr. Ugly turns a passive face to Wold and motions for him to follow him.

Setting his chair back down he gets up and heads out the door after the bruit. After a couple of corridores and corners the merc changes position and gets behind his charge. After making sure that no one is watching he begins to deviate to his own destination.

Wold, not knowing where his quarters are supposed to be on this modified tub doesn't suspect anything.

03:10 hrs, 19th May, 3008

Modified LRT-15 Transport S.S. Vulture

Sickbay

A medic assistant (MA) turns around as the sickbay door whisks open revealing a badly beaten female merc. Blood smeared her black outfit, bruises showed on her face, her nose broken and an eye swollen shut. Her busted energy rifle was slung across her back, right hand holding a nerve-gun set to maximum, enough to kill at close range. She was using her left hand to support a bearly conscious Wold.

Upon seeing the MA the merc rasps out "Get me Blades, NOW!"

BRIDGE

The bridge comm suddenly upens up "Bridge, this is sickbay. We need Commander Blades ". The sentence is interupted, but the comm is left open, with a loud THUD

Shattering glass and an ear piercing scream...

"KILL HIM, KILL HIM!!"

"NO, DON'T KILL HIM!! I'LL GET HIM"

SICKBAY

Wold's eyes open...blood...the red haze must be blood...numb...so numb..."Where..wha.. NO, NO...NO medical won't take more experiments..won't make it..got to do.."

His body suddenly spasms as fear and panic shoot through him. Conscious thought is gone, subconsious survival instinct kicks in. Thrusting his left leg against the door and shoving with the right arm the merc is litterally thrown across the room. She slams into a shelf full of glass medical items. She screams as shards of glass drive into her legs and back.

Wold lurches out of sickbay and tries to run down the hall as the voice of the MA follows him "KILL HIM, KILL HIM!!"

Swearing, the merc stabbs a stim pack and countermands the MA's orders. Pushing herself back up and slipping on blood and glass she stumbles out the door after him. She spies 2 more mercs with energy weapons pointed at the madman scrabbling down the hall after them. Coming up behind him, she fires another maximum nerve shot to the back of Wolds head.

As he attempts to turn and attack the new threat behind him a searing pain shoots through his head and he smacks the deck in a motionless lump.

Looking up at the two mercs staring at her she orders them "Get him to sickbay and lock him down. Full straps! Then get Blades...and Rattler. I think he's an Insurgent."

One of the mercs chuckles, "Why, he's dead with a shot that close, just toss 'em out the lock."

Tilting the nerve-gun slightly, "Humor me. I've had a bad day."

Fifteen minutes later they have him securely strapped to the slab and fully wired to the monitors.

Eighteen minutes later the monitors begin screeming as all the needles are redlined. Those in sickbay snap their heads to the sound. They see him stiff with eyes wide open, sweat soaking everything as he tries to break the restraints. They all flinch when the sharp sound of a breaking bone pierces the air. [/rp]

Wold is experiencing some sort of pyscho flashback... instigated by that big merc and continued to be fueled by his surroundings (sickbay).

I put on my Artic/Urban camo BDU and feeling satisfied about my knife, put it in a proper seath on my belt. The door chime sounded.

I took a deep breath, "It's open," and waited for the inetivible.
