Finally, the End of Canada

FrontPageMagazine.com | June 6, 2001

Excerpt:

quote:

ALMOST HALF of Canadians believe it is highly likely Canada will join the United States within ten years. That’s what an opinion poll, released on June 3 by EKOS Research Associates, a Canadian polling and research firm, tells us.

Here is the link to the full article.

I'm ducking for cover now...

Of those polled, 45 per cent think it highly likely Canada will become part of a North American
Union
within 10 years and 47 per cent believe it will be a reality within 20 years.

Only 24 per cent believe it to be highly unlikely over the next 10 years and 19 per cent said they felt it highly unlikely over the next 20 years.

That is different from becoming part of the United States,
however
.

When that question was put to respondents,
only 17 per cent
believed the United States would
swallow up this nation
over the next 10 years;
23 per cent
found it likely within
two decades
.

emphasis by me

I hate the way they modify the news. It's not true.

Count me in the opponents. I support the liberals.

Sensationistic journalism at its worst; even worse, they give a link proving exactly what EP5 said! Moronic at best.

The canadian dollar falling? I know exactly why... we borrowed a bit too much money from the US between ~1965-1995, and we ow about 600 billions to the US and some other countries.

That makes abot 100 million dollars crossing the borders of canada each day.

Releving to my school economy course, the dollar value will go up if we export (make money) more than we import (pay for stuff), and vice-versa. Since we are paying a lot of interests to the us, our dollar is falling, and us' one is climbing.

If only we could clear a lot of our dept, but they aren't intelligent enough at Ottawa.

There was a time when you could get 1.15us for a 1can. Now, you have .64us for a 1can...

My 600th post!

Personally, I think Canada is for the Canadians. Don't get me wrong, I love Canada, I visit cities there twice a year and my closest friends live up there. That's why I would be unhappy if the US did swallow up Canada. I think the Canadian government does a much better job at MANY things than the US (the US has it's virtues too). So, to sum it up: Canada rocks, Let's keep it that way.

My Worst Nightmare, the US taking on a bunch of socialist momma government whiners, we can barely keep the socialists here at bay, if we ever took in Canada to save them from themselves, We would be buried in their problems too. I say, ship all of our socialists up there, all thier libertarians and Conservatives can come down here, and we will all be happy campers!!

Sorry, nothing personal to you canadians, but your country is F'd up BIG TIME!!! You can keep your problems!!

I actually believe the US will concoct some scheme to take over most of the world's countries all but in name (i.e. REALLY BINDING TREATIES, controlling economies, basically pulling the strings) and when it has it's little empire it will collapse under it's own damn weight, history has shown this to be true for alot of empires.

I thought that this was the Clinton/Blair/Annan/Schroeder New World Order.

The USA doesn't want any part of it. Only the extreme Left wing here wants that to happen.

The reason why the Canadian Dollar is so low is because we KEEP IT LOW. A low Canadian dollar makes Canadian manufactured goods and services all the more attractive to American companies. I shouldn't really spill the beans here with so many American's listening, but having a dollar on par or higher than America was a good strategy when all we did was sell natural resources to the States. Then came along Pierre Trudeau (I know you westerners just LOVE him) He turned things around. Started Canada on a road towards becoming a nation of manufacturing goods. It started with branch plants, American companies could only operate here if they had a canadian branch of their company. A Branch Plant. The American's said, "Sure, whatever." And companies sprang up like wildfire due to our a)highly educated workforce, B) easy access to natural resources and power c) a lower currency means the American dollar HAS MORE BUYING POWER.

This has served Canada well in the decades that follow. The reason why American films from 'The Score' to 'Good Will Hunting' to 'Driven' to series like the X Files and Robocop, and Relic Hunter are shot here in Canada. We make literally Billions of dollars in trade thanks to our low dollar. We don't lose, we win big time.

By the way, the low dollar has nothing to do with the debt. It does affect intrest, but being in debt creates being in debt. And America has a MUCH bigger debt per capita than we do. (They also have a MUCH higher GDP than we do )

The only people who want a dollar on par with America are old people who remember when all we did was sell lumber. People who sell lumber. And people who haven't got a clue as to how the economy of this country works.

Personally I love a low dollar. It means I get to work with more and more Americans everyday. And as much as I like to tease them mercilessly, they are really cool people deep down inside. Just don't let them know you think they're cool, they'll never let you forget it. ;D

(Must have missed this thread a month ago... I don't really check out General much. )

I'm deeply surprised that Americans and Canadians dislike each other at all. As it says on both sides of the border crossing over in Sumas, WA, "The grass is greener."

Anyway, getting back to the point of this topic... rubbish. Canada and the U.S. are both way better off as separate entities. It's proven; nations benefit more from international trade than they do from intranational trade. The taxes, duties, etc... all make people raise their prices to compensate, keeping the currency worthwhile.

I assure you, if Canada became one with the U.S., the economy would go apes***. And I'm not saying that we'd take down their economy, I'm saying that we'd mutually take down both economies. I.e. the American dollar would be valued at most half of what it is now. So would the Canadian dollar, but there wouldn't be any difference between the two after the switch.

Believe me, the U.S. needs Canada and Canada needs the U.S. It's a mutual thing.

Plus, we'd screw over the immigration. Canada is building population through immigration. The U.S. has uh, more natural means of building population. If Canada became part of the U.S., Canadians would gravitate southward and all of the water, uranium deposits, iron mines, copper mines... everything would go to hell. That would suck arse, believe me.

Now to address particular topics.

quote:

My Worst Nightmare, the US taking on a bunch of socialist momma government whiners, we can barely keep the socialists here at bay, if we ever took in Canada to save them from themselves, We would be buried in their problems too. I say, ship all of our socialists up there, all thier libertarians and Conservatives can come down here, and we will all be happy campers!!

Socialism is nothing to be afraid of. Theoretically it works. In practice, it doesn't, but if it were done without the bloodthirsty struggle to be on top, it would be fine.

The main issue is that humanity isn't suited to socialism or communism. We'd much rather murder a fellow man than give up our possessions (or, murder a fellow man for our possessions). That worries me.

Also, don't forget that sending people somewhere means that you'll get different opinions. Our "Libertarians" (we don't actually have any because Libertarianism is an American concept) and Conservatives are nothing like your Libertarians and Conservatives.

quote:

Canada will not become part of the US unless they find lots more oil.

Canada has tons of oil in the Hibernia Oil Fields off the coast of Newfoundland. We're just more interested in harvesting any fish we have left there rather than pollute the sea. If we needed to extract it, we'd have no need to worry about oil.

quote:

I actually believe that a more long-term likelyhood (50-100 years) is that the USA, Canada and Mexico all become the United States of North America.

I agree entirely, but the prospect still worries me.

Plus, you can't possibly say that Canada would revert back to the Imperial system. We'd stay metric. It's almost impossible to go back to Imperial, because the entire teaching system in Canada is now mathematically based off of metric.

And Americans would definitely not wish to give up their Imperial system.

(I wonder if they really are going to invent metric time eventually. Reinventing the wheel, granted, but it's a possibility nonetheless.)

And Mexico... Suffice it to say, there'd be even more contests over who has rights to the water at the California-Mexico border. Because there would be no border!

Allow me to Quote Heinlein:

"But the thing that stonkered me was the idea on Canada united with us. Most Americans do not know why Canadians dislike us (I do not), but they do. The idea that Canadians would ever vote to unite with us boggles the mind."

Not perfectly accurate mind you, since it's the US as a nation that most Canadians I know dislike, not her people.
