Just heard on the radio, but we've get more info in about half an hour (I'm at the office, not television). Anyway, websites of CNN, ABC, CBS are all unreachable so I guess I hear more later.

It indeed is a waste

I just saw it on the news - HOLY SHIT!!!

Current reports (as of 09:39 EST) say at least 6 people are dead, and over 1000 injured. It's currently being treated as a terrorist attack.

I saw the shot of the second plane hitting - it looked more like something out of Hollywood, rather than reality - there are some sick people out there and my deepest sympathies go out to the families of the lost workers

UPDATE (2:56pm GMT): Now i'm hearing that there have been two explosions near the Pentagon, but there are no reports of injuries or fatalities - presumably since the area was evacuated, along with the White house & the US Treasury.

This concerted attack on the US has turned around my opinions on the proposed Missile defences...

Bomb the country?

He cannot affort to do nothing. Not after this. They probably find out what (these are not persons in my book) _exactly_ did it and then will bomb the hell out of them.

They have the weapons to do it accurately and they were not afraid to bomb Bagdad.

Just heard the next news update. Both towers collapsed (as Tac already mentioned). They estimate some ten-thousand+ casualties.

Dont get me wrong, if it was a foreign terrorist group, they will be taken out, even if the US needs to invade the country they hiding in.

Well, my best friend who works at the Union Square Hotel saw both impacts (he said the first plane came in low and level) and he said they were really not very loud and that there were several car bomb explosions in the area (one in front of his favorite theater!)........according to him they hit the trade centers as everybody was on their way to work so if they had waited an extra hour it would have been far worse. My friend says right now there is a lot of racial tension. He was almost attacked by a couple of gloating arabians and such.

Also, in further news...the aircraft circling West Virginia has been escorted away by 4 f-16s...I could be wrong about this...that part was some hotshot newscaster

The questions we should ask ourselves now are who could have done it? Is this a one-off or just a first wave? Is it only againts the U.S?

I send my deepest condolences to all of you that is affected by this tragedy. I hope you do catch those pricks who planned this.

Taken from CNN.com

--------------------------------------------

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Terrorists struck the United States Tuesday morning in harrowing, widespread attacks that included at least three commercial jet crashes into significant buildings.

• In the first attack, a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m., followed by another plane into the second tower about 20 minutes later. Both towers later collapsed.

• About an hour later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon, part of which later collapsed.

• Building hit by debris near the World Trade Center is on verge of collapse.

• American Airlines told CNN that it lost two planes, both en route to Los Angeles: American Flight 11 from Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard was lost. This is believed, but not confirmed, to have been one of the planes that crashed into the trade center. ... American Flight 77, a Boeing 757 from Washington Dulles airport to Los Angeles with 58 passengers and six crew is unaccounted for. The jet that crashed into the Pentagon may have been this one, but that is still unknown.

• United Airlines lost two planes: United Airlines Flight 93 airliner headed from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, crashed near Somerset, Pennsylvania -- police said initial reports indicated no survivors. ... United confirmed the crash of Flight 175 from Boston to Los Angeles with 56 passengers and seven crew aboard. It's possible, but not confirmed, that this is the second plane that hit the World Trade Center.

• The Pentagon, the White House, the State Department, the Justice Department, the Capitol, the CIA and all other government buildings in Washington are evacuated.

• President Bush calls the crashes "apparent terrorist attacks" and "a national tragedy." Bush is to issue a statement from Barksdale AFB in Shreveport, Louisiana.

• In the first-ever national ground stop of aircraft, all flights nationwide have been stopped at their departure airports.

• International flights had been diverted to Canada; FAA says later, however, that 22 U.S.-bound international flights would be allowed to land.

• Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, said in reaction to the news of the terror attacks that "we want to tell the American children that Afghanistan feels your pain and we hope that the courts find justice."

• In New York, more than 10,000 rescue personnel rushed to the scene. Lower Manhattan is being completely evacuated.

• Israel has evacuated all its missions around the world.

• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta was evacuated. CDC was preparing bioterrorism teams in case they become necessary.

• Philadelphia landmarks were also evacuated.

• In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated; United Nations in New York evacuated.

• The New York Port Authority said it had closed all bridges and tunnels into the city.

• U.S. stock markets were closed after the New York attacks.

• NATO sent home all non-essential personnel from its Brussels, Belgium, headquarters.

• The Immigration and Naturalization Service has put the U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada on highest state of alert.

• Los Angeles International Airport has been evacuated.

• All Disney parks in Orlando, Florida, and Disneyland in Anaheim, California have been closed.

Explosion rocks Pentagon, terrifies Washington

Posted: September 11, 2001

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A portion of the Pentagon collapsed Tuesday after it was struck by an aircraft as an apparent coordinated attack spread fear throughout the U.S. capital.

The symbols of U.S. power came under attack as all federal government buildings, including the White House, the Capitol building and the Supreme Court, were evacuated.

The explosions and evacuations came shortly after two planes flew into the World Trade Center tower buildings in New York City.

Fighters jets scrambled to intercept what was reported to be second aircraft headed toward the area around the Pentagon, but the second aircraft never appeared.

The FBI suspects the events in New York and Washington were part of an organized terrorist campaign, a senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press.

Among the developments in Washington were reports of:

n An explosion at the Pentagon. n A car-bomb explosion outside the State Department. n A loud explosion reported in the vicinity of the Capitol.

In a remarkable scene, security guards brandishing automatic weapons patrolled outside the White House.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered the entire nationwide air traffic system shut down and diverted to Canada all international flights inbound to New York.

Explosion, smoke

At the Pentagon, a huge plume of smoke rose from the grounds of the building, headquarters for the U.S. military.

"A plane hit the building," David Cook, director of administration and management at the Pentagon, the world's biggest office building.

Eyewitnesses told local television stations that a commercial airliner appeared to have smashed into the side of the building, which is near the Potomac River running through Washington and close to Washington National Airport.

"I saw the tail of a large airliner. ... It plowed right into the Pentagon," said an Associated Press Radio reporter. "There is billowing black smoke."

President Bush pauses for a moment of silence in Sarasota, Florida, before heading back to Washington Tuesday.

Gray smoke billowed from the five-sided building. The more than 20,000 civilians and military men and women who work in the building streamed into the surrounding car parks, driven by blue-and-white strobe lights and wailing signs.

It was not immediately clear whether Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was in the building at the time of the crash, which occurred on the southwestern side of the complex.

Lisa Burgess, a reporter for the Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, said she was walking in a corridor near the blast site and was thrown to the ground by the force of the blast. Sirens wailed as the whole building was evacuated.

CNN Military Affairs Correspondent Jamie McIntyre reported that the Pentagon had gone to "threat condition Delta," which is implemented when "a terrorist attack has occurred or intelligence has been received that action against a specific location is likely," McIntyre said.

White House employees evacuated

There were also reports of a fire on the National Mall, a stretch of open, green space between the Capitol and the Washington Monument. That report was not immediately confirmed.

At the White House, employees ran out of the executive mansion as police cleared it. Aides said a "credible threat" against the White House had come in.

At first, the evacuation was orderly but, under orders from the Secret Service, employees were soon ordered to run out of the gates.

Officers, some with automatic rifles, were lined outside the White House.

From Pennsylvania Avenue, CNN Correspondent Kate Snow reported that members of Congress were evacuating the Capitol grounds.

Incidents connected

At the State Department, a senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the incident at State appeared connected with the events in New York and at the Pentagon.

"Something has happened at the State Department," the source said. "We don't know what yet."

A voice on the building loud-speaker system said there was a fire in the building, but reports on that were sketchy as sirens blared throughout the building.

One official said there may have only been a fire alarm pulled. People were allowed into the building only to retrieve secure information.

Following the World Trade Center incident, a State Department official told CNN they will be involved in determining who carried out these attacks.

State Department officials sent cables U.S. embassies worldwide, advising representatives at each that they could decide their security posture and determine whether to remain open.

I would call not hitting the terrorist group who did with a nuke, restraint. Some one needs to pay, i am getting tired of "experts" saying on news that we don't have some one to hit back at. We know of plenty of terriorist camps.

It is like a dream, i can't imagine the World Trade Towers being gone (I just visited them a few years ago). I have seen the footage of the buildings collapseing.

Another piece of footage that is like a dream is a picture of peole waving things out of the top floors of one of the towers. It is scary to know they died when the building collasped.

BTW the Trade Towers were not full, a witness that got out of the buildings before they collapsed said were less than full.

I have been watching the news since about 8:50 EST. I live in the suburbs of D.C. and D.C. is in gridlock.

Well, this was a rude wake up call when I woke up this morning. what can be said? America has been struck a blow, perhaps the largest single attack against American Civilians this century.

I remember one time when I was in 5th grade, when we were bombing Iraq, and someone in my class said they would be waiting on their porch with shotguns if the Iraquis invaded. The teacher promptly dismissed his comment with a laugh and told him that it wouldn't be possible for them to get over here to hurt us.

It kind of puts into perspective what other countries feel like when we bomb them, and destroy their facilities. It is unthinkable that it should happen to us yet is all the more likely in the future.

As an American, I would suggest that we work carefully, and if we do find out who is responsible send our own message of terror.

Everyone here who is an american needs to get an American flag to fly outside their homes to show support.
