this morning, i see someone sneaking around my front yard. so i go out to question what the hell he is doing, and he hands me this flyer that says his company is going to be going around the neighborhood repainting the address numbers on the street curb, and for an extra $25 theyll paint an american flag next to it...

i almost strangled the man.... so much hatred flowed through my veins that i almost beat this man to within an inch of his life.

how dare he and his "company" make money off of what happened in sept??? these sharks play off of other peoples sorrow and misery to sell their wares to make an extra buck... and i called him everything but a child of god...

i call it "mail order patriotism" for the simple reason, that before 9-11, most people couldnt give 2 shi*s about the flag or patriotism, then when it happened, someone saw a chance to make money by selling american flags, so people started buying them wanting to hop on that "patriotism" bandwagon... i swear... people are sheep.

it makes me ashamed to know that im a veteran and i protected a$$holes like this with my life...

ok... rants over. anyone else have thoughts on this?

It's borderline. Every couple of years a company does this and the local news latches on. The story is usually that the company is promoting the numbers as an added measure of safety for you if emergency personnel need to find your house. The local news then interviews various emergency personnel and they say it really doesn't help all that much.

This I know. I have delivered before and as long as you know the city's layout, can figure the odd or even side of the street, and can catch a few houses so you know how the numbers run you can find anything.

Then they report it's not illegal so just be careful. So yeah it's a borderline scam. The flag thing is a new twist. Borderline bad taste but not terrible.

Something's better than nothing eh?

Eh, here's another one. The company called Microtec, specialised in house fire/burglar alarm systems was banned in some areas closeby because the company's salesmen would dress in a very much similar uniform that the police's one, cap included, and would talk to the customer in a manner that most believed that they were actually police people, so people would buy the coslty alarm systems because they felt they really needed one.

Anyone who pays for that deserves what they get.

Mmmmmmm. More towards bad taste. Ouch.

Still not as terrible and the Judge Judy episode (don't make fun) where an American flag manufacturer had a previous order and the money and then skipped on the contract, jacked the prices and sold to someone else.

and hang a sign on my front door that reads:

"solicitors will be shot"
