Sacked:Out on my ass

Well after 12 years of dedicated service, a number of awards and accolades and who knows how many job opportunities I've turned down, I am out of a job. Turns out the last years of hard work in school were all in vain. The State of PA which regulates Drug alcohol and Mental health counseling has in thier wisdom decided that I lack the education to continue to do my job. You see my Degree is in Human Resource Management and the state does not recognize it as a clinical field and told my agency I could no longer practice. They in turn told me due to budget cuts they can't transfer me back to my old department (Drug and Alcohol Prevention) even thogh I am the ONLY state certified prevention specialist in the agency and am third on the seniority list.

In other words thank you Merry Christmas and you're fired. This sucks on so many levels I cant even start to discuss them. Today for the first time I sat and watch my wife and kid go off to school and work with the prospect of trying to find a job two weeks before Christmas. I don't even have a resume. So I am truly starting over and at 43 that ain't real cool.

Race, man, do I know how that feels.

I got layed off last december 31st, and then found a job in February, then got layed off from that one back in August, and have been unemployed since then.

Went and got some new training and am starting my own business on the 1st of January. Finally gave up on finding a new job.

Maybe you can do the same thing I am doing, go and work for yourself. Not sure how you could start that, but with your education, there are all kinds of possibilities I'm sure.

I had to actually go back to school for 3 months, and it was a pain at 38, going back to school, but at the same time, it was something that I was already familiar with.

Anyway, I am really sorry that happened, don't feel like you're all alone, because you're not.

Good luck, and oh yeah, Merry F'ing christmas. That's EXACTLY how I am feeling right now, never been so broke in my life, but I have faith in myself and my family that we'll get through it, just as you will.

Good luck!!

That blows man and right before christmas too what balls. A few questions, how long have you been doing that particular job the counseling not the prevention? What's the job's policy on pension if there is one with your job?

Spent yesterday afternoon rolling my pension over into a Roth IRA, Boy I was tempted to take a distribution but came to my senses and left well enough alone. However now I'll have to do something crazy like sell my Steel Battallion set up to the highest bidder (choke).

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement, you have no idea how much they mean to me.

Sorry to hear about your situation Race. I'm sure that things will turn around for you. It happened to me 14 years ago and I was feeling just about how you're probably feeling right now. All I can say is try to keep your spirits up. For me, I look back at that day and realize that is was the best thing that could have happened to me. The company that I was let go from sucked and I found a much better job making more money. Of course at the time it happened I was unable to see that and wanted to beat the president of the company to a pulp. I was let go right after I purchased a new house and my wife had just given birth to our second child. Things have a way of working themselves out just try not to let it get you down.

The fact that you had other offers while you were working at that job should give you some encouragement. From reading your various posts I can tell that you are level headed and should have a better job in no time. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Race, Sorry to hear your news mate.

It's not been a good time for many recently. As a contract worker I live with the constant worry that I will be out of work soon.

Still keep a positive outlook and I'm sure you'll find something. I think things are starting to get better so maybe there'll be some good news for you soon

Race,

After all my recent problems and the support I've received from here, I understand as many understood my thoughts, that this is a good place - with truly good people who are here to lend support.

I truly appreciate the support and advice that you have given me. If you need someone to talk to, as Grayfox has offered I have an open ear and am willing to call you if necessary. Just PM me if you need someone to talk to.

I've been out of town with my new job the past week, and I didn't expect to see this when I got back. I want you to know that you are in my prayers buddy, and if you need someone to talk to, give me a shout out.

God Bless... and have a Merry Christmas despite the way things may look now... because I know how the lord works in mysterious ways... and things will work out as long as you keep your faith.

Sincerely,

Dan Cooper

Kevin, you've got people praying for you buddy. I know how hard it was to see even the upside to life in general when I was in the thick of my own problems... but as time has gone on, I have found that everything has happened exactly as it should have, and was a good thing... and even though I've still got some things going on, I face them with the knowledge that God undoubtedly has something better in store for me.

Thank you for the vote of confidence in my new job... I've been rather busy the past week, travelled from Panama City, to Dothan AL, back here to Mobile area, will be going Monday to Montgomery AL, then probably to Birmingham...

I'm making a killing on mileage alone... of course my luck the car will probably explode or something from being driven all over the state. We shall see eh?

Still have a very Merry Christmas Kevin, and know that not only me, but others are praying for you, and the best advice I can give you is to keep the faith buddy.

"but he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9,10)

God Bless,

Dan Cooper

  • 3 months later...

I am finally gainfully employed again! After 3 months of search I finally got a good position. The funny thing is I went from being unemployed to having three simotaneous offers( All last week!) I had to choose which one was the best fit. The winner added six thousand dollars to thier original offer and called me yesterday (Saturday) while I was washing the cars.

I am now the Asst. Director of large Alternative treatment center. More responsibility, more prestige ( I have a secretary!)amd more money. Like Remo said sometimes change is a good thing. Sadly, I move from being a fulltime therapist to management, but I welcome the challenge. Just thought you guys would like to know since so many of you were supportive of me during this down period. To all of you thanks again!
