My brother went yesterday on a "semi-porn" website (as the note he wrote in bad french said) and it f*cked up my internet explorer on my second machine. no matter what i do the default homepage is always set to some extreme porn website that makes popups and other pages appear at an exponential rate do the point where i must disconnect my internet access so the popups stops, and ctrl-alt-del my IE ..

I tried using ad-aware 6.1 using the latest core, and while it detected alot of crap (which i deleted), it still is nearly as bad. I updated my ie5 to ie6 using windowsupdate.com but it didn,t fixed the problem.

If there any tool or trick i can use without having to repair/reinstall windows?

Right Click in the IE icon on your desktop and an options window will pop up. You'll see at the bottom of the options PROPERTIES. Left click on that. Another option window will appear the main IE window. You'll already be selected for GENERAL options and it's the first one you want it says HOMEPAGE new address that you want say for example this page Http://www.3000ad.com/ or whatever. Then you will click on apply to save your change(s) (bottom right on the window). Make sure before you do all this that you clean out all IE temp files history etc....

Many people like Ad-Aware but in my experience it only catches about 70% of adware/spyware. Try running SpyBot if the above advice doesn't work and your homepage keeps getting reset to something unwanted.

I agree with Gallion, change your browser. I'd recommend Firebird Does prettymuch everything IE can do and has some nice extra features like tabbed browsing to boot.

I'll look and try with spybot

....your brother huh?

Yeah my brother .. I'm gonna lock my computer so he can't use it when I'm not there.

i can take a pic (no scanner, but a webcam) of the note, you'll see that not only he writes in a bad french (ok, you won't see it) but he write badly, period. He wrote in allcaps and I can barely understand what are some of the words.

Sorry Epsilon 5. Wasn't implying that you were a noobie but I couldn't tell if you tried that route. Have you tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete and just look at the tasks that are running in the background? Check out the ones you don't recognize. Alot of those ad crap programs you can catch doing that. I agree on the Spybot that was featured on Tech Tv's The Screen Savers show as a good program.

Do a search at cnet.com downloads for RegCleaner. A handy registery cleaner and viewer utility.

The website placed an entry in your registry; IE HKEY and startup HKEY that will always make itself the default homepage for IE.

Warning backup pertinate data before mucking with registry. Fat fingers have been known to cause BSD and require complete wipe and reload of OS.

I recently gave up Netcaptor and went back to Opera, now that the latest v7.11 has everything I need and more - including tabbed browsing (the whole reason I was using Netcaptor to begin with).

SC is right, Opera 7.11 is probably the nicest browser available currently. I'd switch "your brother" away from IE as fast as humanly possible.

I admit though, I'm still using IE 6.0, but thats just cause some websites don't work in Opera, but the number is few.

TTFN

Just downloaded and ran it for the first time. Nice. It gives the relevant information and obvious visual queues.

It is also strikes a nice balance between "Click this button to fix registry" and manually going through each entry trying to determine if it is relevant.

Thanks for mentioning it!

Try it and you'll never use IE again. Evar.

You can say that again. I tend to prefer alternatives to mainstream just on principle, and usually am much happier for it.

This is no exception. Two decent pieces of software from this thread alone what else do you guys have in store?

Running a second HardDrive or even just multiple partitions on one drive, for just data is your friend in this instance.

All my machines run dual HDD's for just this purpose.
