I guess I'd like to see where you got that idea about this chip, $ilk, because your statement flies against my understanding of CPU's (OS's add "task switching" -- the CPU is doesn't know about or care about what it runs). Nor did I read anything in the linked article that implied that to me. You have a link for further reading?

Creating a bootable Windows XP setup CD that also contains all the Service Pack 2 updates is called "slipstreaming". I thought I'd share this useful technical tidbit. Read about it here. You'll need a CD burner, of course. And no, you can't use this as a sneaky way to get two XP licenses. The newly burned install CD will still require the same CD key as the original, and will still need activating and thus subject to the MS product activation police.

I'm shooting for a system that I can expand/upgrade for (hopefully) three years without a motherboard swapout. So far, that means my specs are set at: [*]SLI-enabled PCI-e motherboard, capable of supporting AMD 64 X2s & 4 GB RAM [*]AMD 64-bit ~ 2-2.5 MHz [*]1-2 GB RAM [*]nVidia 6800 w/ 256 MB [*]UCAWA Yeah, I know this isn't hardware but it is a REQUIREMENT ;-) That might get tweaked a little bit for price purposes, but I figure this gives me two CPU upgrade paths (faster and/or switch to X2 dual-core), a RAM upgrade path (get more), and at least two graphics upgrade paths (buy 2nd 6800 or buy 1 or 2 7800's). Not to mention, all those upgrade paths will be cheaper in a year or two now than today.

That was definitely the impression I was getting. But my initial survey of "current" mobos seem to be all for 64-bit CPUs, which is why I'm in the quandary I'm in now. I guess I'd better head back to all those hardware sites and start my research over again. I remember back in the day when researching hardware upgrades was so much simpler. Heh, this kind of pits my two hats (Joe Gamer vs. Joe Developer) against each other. I think the upgrade solution requiring the least work (Joe Gamer) will win this out...

-- bump -- So did anyone who got the mobos with the 64-bit processor support (and presumably 64-bit processor) also go with 64-bit Windows XP or equivalent MS operating system? Or are you still using 32-bit Windows XP? I've done some searching around and driver support is still kind of thinner than 32-bit -- I wouldn't have any manufacturer-supported printer drivers, for instance. Not to mention Antivirus support still seems sparse, except for a few guys like Avast or if you want to pay for corporate editions. Thus far, 64-bit XP seems attractive only to businesses. So -- would Joe Gamer (i.e. me) looking to upgrade his PC (and wanting to purchase UCAWA at some point if I ever get done with the game I'm playing now, 118+ hrs and counting) want to buy a 64-bit PC if I wasn't also going to get 64-bit XP? Is there any point, other than an abstract "being ready for the future", to having a 64-bit PC with plain old 32-bit XP on it? On a related note, I'm looking forward to Windows Vista, and that comes in 32- and 64-bit flavors but I'm worried about hardware support again...

OK, I broadened the search. I found this link (UC AWA and future game 64 bit support?) and this link (Computer Upgrade, Finally). The second is less of what I was wondering about, but the implications of the discussion going on in the thread may help answer the question. My original search was for "64-bit". Stupid me, I should have thought to also try "64 bit". So now we have two top-level topics in this category, one with each variation of 64 bit (64-bit). The next guy who searches is sure to stumble across one of them...

I suppose this is unsupported, because the game req'ts are for "XP" which probably means "x86" XP. However, 64-bit XP is supposed to run 32-bit apps transparently. Has anyone tried running UCAWA or UCG on a 64-bit XP box? Is there any reason to believe this would result in problems? Or would UCAWA and/or UCG not even notice the difference? I'd try this myself on a 64-bit box, if I had a 64-bit box...that I wouldn't be in trouble for trying it on (work).

I recently bought one of those combined/rerelease CD things artists sometimes put out as a way of repackaging some of their older work -- they put two of their older recorded CDs into one album. Unfortunately, such never include the original liner notes. I am very interested in reading the notes to one of the two CDs in the collection, but my searches on the net have been fruitless. (I keep getting hits on the original CD album and have had no luck filtering this for a transcript of the liner). I absolutely hate it when publishers do that. IMHO they should include the original liner notes to all CDs in such a combined release. Grrrrrrr. Does anyone know of web sites that have transcripts of the liner notes? Or should I just shell out the $$$ and hunt down an original CD somewhere?

It would have helped if you had read the books. Expository back-story elements always come across much better in print. Not to mention help explain stuff in the movie (which usually means the movie should have done a better job in that respect). As for how Aslan came back, I thought the movie's handling of that left a bit to be desired (for one, Aslan's explanation in the movie was slightly but IMO critcally different than in the book). Admittedly, the book's handling of that is very brief itself but at least seems to make sense in the context of the larger Narnian universe. And no, the girls really didn't have that big of an "active" role even in the book, particularly Susan. IMO I think they were used more as a foil for other characters, and also to provide a human perspective when there otherwise would be none. Yet I think the book would have needed a lot of rejigging for the story to work without them, and an entire allegorical theme would probably be lost. I really liked the movie. I thought it was very faithful to the original story, with a few small deviations. My biggest gripe was there weren't enough talking animals. Narnia was given to the Talking Beasts as a kingdom. Instead we see a lot of mythological creatures (centaurs, fauns, etc) but not enough talking animals. 8/10

I hated the second one. It felt too much like "James Bond" and not enough of the stealthy cloak & dagger stuff I felt MI was actually about and that I remember from the (second?) TV series when I was kid. "If you are caught or killed the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your action." Yeah right -- who DIDN'T know Ethan Hunt was around in #2? He was caught (seen) in action way too many times! This looks like more of the same.

And if you read the whole listing, by doing so you'd end up losing at least $15K since that's the actual material worth of the gold (according to the listing). All the labor and craftsmanship costs melted away into a rectilinear slab...
