  1. uncheck the "Close on exit" box.... Right-click on the Bc3K shortcut Left-click properties Left-click Program Tab Near the bottom you will see the "Close on exit", Left-click on it. Left-click on apply then Left-click on OK. Launch the game and write down the crash message. Then search (no date restrictions) the forum for that crash message and you should be able to find your answer. IF you can't, post your crash message here. [ 07-01-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]
  2. hummm... In CMOS your Epox bd should allow you to reserve IRQ5 as a legacy ISA device. Try that if you haven't. Are you running any tweak utilities or overclocking your video card? If not, set it back to defaults... IF it still won't work....check other settings even if they aren't related to sound, such as the memory settings for the short cuts. Also make sure (someone correct me if I'm wrong here) that the correct (the one for the voodoo2) GLIDE2X.OVL is in the BC3000ad folder Also from the FAQ, voodoo section "make sure your desktop color depth is set to 16-Bit hi color mode." I'm running out of suggestions.
  3. I'm not that familiar with the ESS cards and not sure if they load an SB emulator. Their web site says they are SB16 compatable, which usually means a driver is loaded... but try the following.... In your second post: quote:It is under ESS Allegro-1 DOS Emulation. Device is working properly. This means that your dos driver is loaded. Go in there again and on the general tab, Device usage area, make sure that the box Exists in all hardware profiles is checked and the box Disable in this hardware profile is not checked. Run the Sound Setup from the BC3000ad folder...as long as your PC doesn't reboot to run that program then you are running in 'full screen dos session'. Use the Select Digital option. I'm not sure what card you are actually selecting, but select the ESS AudioDrive. It will prompt you for the I/O, which is 220, and the DMA, which is 1. IRQ will say N/A. DO NOT TEST IT. OK 2 times to get out. From Windows OPEN up notepad (Start->Programs->Accessories->notepad) From Notepad leftclick on File, then Open. In the field "Files of Type" click the down arrow and select All Files. In the field "Look in" click the down arrow then click on the C drive icon, (c . DBL click the BC3000ad folder. Find the file HMISET.CFG and DBL click on it. Now, make the changes to the file to match below, ignoring ONLY the deviceID. [DIGITAL] DeviceName = ESS AudioDrive DeviceIRQ = 5 DeviceDMA = 1 DevicePort = 0x220 DeviceID = MAKE NO CHANES HERE [MIDI] DeviceName = ESS AudioDrive DevicePort = 0x388 DeviceID = MAKE NO CHANGES HERE When done, Click on File then Save. Exit and try and launch the Bc3k shortcut (not the Bc3k (3dfx) shortcut) Let me know what happens.... [ 06-29-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]
  4. From the FAQs. Make sure you follow these directions very carefully. quote:ESS AUDIODRIVE ON COMPAQ PRESARIO 2240 EXAMPLE Go into CONTROL PANEL and from the SYSTEM/DEVICE MANAGER tab, select the 'sound, video and game controllers' tab. This should now open to reveal the sound card. Left-click on it and then select the RESOURCES tab. Scroll the list and make a note of the 'interrupt request', 'direct memory access' and 'input/output range' values. For the ESS card, you would have written down IRQ 5, DMA 5, IO 220 (depending on your machine of course). From a full screen DOS session, go to the BC3K install directory and run SETUP.EXE for the HMI sound system. Select the 'select digital' option and select all the defaults. You will not be able to enter an IRQ. Do NOT test it. Click on OK to return to the menu. Go to 'select midi' and do the same. Again, do NOT test it. Select OK to return to the menu. Finally, scroll down and select OK to exit the menu and OK again to save the config. Using C:WINDOWSNOTEPAD.EXE or similar text editor, open up the HMISET.CFG file in the BC3K install directory. Make sure you set NOTEPAD to view all files because it defaults to *.TXT. With the file open, it should look like BEFORE version below. BEFORE AFTER [DIGITAL] [DIGITAL] DeviceName = ESS AudioDrive DeviceName = ESS AudioDrive DeviceIRQ = -1 DeviceIRQ = 5 DeviceDMA = 1 DeviceDMA = 5 DevicePort = 0x220 DevicePort = 0x220 DeviceID = 0xe019 DeviceID = 0xe019 [MIDI] [MIDI] DeviceName = ESS AudioDrive DeviceName = ESS AudioDrive DevicePort = 0x388 DevicePort = 0x388 DeviceID = 0xa002 DeviceID = 0xa002 Simply replace the DeviceIRQ, DeviceDMA and DevicePort values to match your card. In the case of the ESS AudioDrive in the Compaq, it would now look like the AFTER version above. Also note that according to ESS's web site, NO ESS sound cards have DOS legacy support. They are supposed to have DOS windowed sound support...make sure that your soundblaster emulator is loaded in windows. [ 06-27-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]
  5. Support for that version ended some time ago. I have a ver. 1.0 cd myself, but went and purchsed a newer 2.0 version some time back. I have a cd floating around somewhere that has some patches for some games, but don't remember if it has those files. Maybe someone else has them. All in all, IMO, you are better off buying a 2.0 or newer ver. of BC3000ad or playing the BCM demo's while you wait. Trust me, BCM is worth waiting for....
  6. I had better get landing clearance... So, I'm offically requesting landing clearance
  7. verify that you have the correct and updated mouse driver loaded. I had a similar problem when using a microsoft mouse driver (windows default) for a logitech mouse. Also, what version of BC3K are you running?
  8. [rp] The meeting between Gallion and Wold came to an abrupt halt at the intruder alert klaxon. Mouthing something that was lost in the din, Gallion and York headed off to their station. As this wasn't his ship, nor did he have any assignments, Wold decided to stay put. Staying put didn't necessarily mean idle. Grabbing several snacks, he then disconnected the console and hooked in the box, which he had dubbed Gin. While waiting for Gin to do her magic his thoughts turned to the box. Gin just didn't 'hack' into the system. Instead it more or less grafted itself into the host system in a series of steps. That still wasn't accurate, but it was the most he had been able to figure out. An absent minded grin began to appear on his face as a few memories of his escape day filtered in. His escape had been aided by several factors. The group conducting the experiments wasn't supposed to exist so they weren't able to yell for extra security when he got loose. They were also located in an 'sealed-off', abandoned underground facility left over from 20th century cold war days. It was much larger then the current operation and a game of cat and mouse had ensued. He was positive they would have gotten him if it hadn't been for what he called Divine Providence. Entering a tech room through a never used door a suprised tech had no chance to react and immediately started babbling to save his life. 2 of the 'boxes' had been partially ID'd for others and were useless so he promptly destroyed them, the 3rd one he commandered. Not knowing how Gin worked, or that it had a hidden, sadistic 'personality', he had lightly tapped into the security system. The whole purpose had been to map a route out of the complex. What brought that grin was the chaos brought about when he had effectively yanked the plug on the security connection. The action had labotomized a good portion of the security computers setting off every alarm in the whole compound. Armed goons crawling in each nook and crannie, locks working then failing, and A slight beeping noise penetrates Wold's mental wandering. Focusing on the screen a red warning light is flashing. "Well, Gin," he murmers, "I wonder why the commander has been ignoring that hack attack from engineering? They don't seem to have gotten in yet....." He gives Gin the order to clear the alarm. Wonder what has that commander soooo distracted.... "Gin, give me a bridge view." A ghosted feed from the bridge security camera then fills the screen. The officers seem to be busy doing their dutys, but 1 or 2 are missing from the bridge. Ah, Commander Polovoski... Why does she keep glaring at the ready room? "Gin, pull up that security camera in the ready room." A short but brisk arguement ensues with Gin finally giving in, reactivating the security camera and passing another ghosted feed to the screen. "My, my, what have we here?? Gin, I know Savage, but who are the other 2?" "IF you must know..." "I wouldn't ask if I didn't need to know, now who are they?" "Foss and Akuma, both Galcom commanders." "Gin, activate the speaker in that ready room and your mic." The tension in the ready room was extremely visible. Wold didn't know what any one's reaction was going to be. The speaker in the ready room pops to life, "Ahem, Commander Savage, this is Commander Wold. You know, you give new meaning to the term 'ready room'. It is very very tempting to pass this, ah, video feed to the rest of the ship, just to stir the pot a bit? Wonder what that would do for ship moral?" The eye's of Akuma catch Wold's attention. He wasn't sure what it was, a hurting kindred spirit maybe? Made him think of his own wife... Wold continues with barely a break. "I won't though. For Akuma's sake I won't. BTW, did you know that you have a rather agitated commander on the other side of that door? She looks ready to chew deck plates. Need anything else? Coffee? Tea? Pastries?" 9. If I understood your statement earlier your patch files are saved to your desktop and you aren't sure how to move it. *** How to copy the file to the correct directory for install. *** Right-click on that file Left-click on copy Right-click on My Computer Left-click on Explore Second icon down should be (C , Left click on this icon IF you installed in the default folder, find the BC3000AD folder on the right side of the scree. Right-click on this folder Left-click on paste This copies the file from the desktop to that directory. You will need to do this for each patch. To run the patch, open the folder and run it from there by double-clicking the icon. To verify which settings you are using for the DOS SB16 emulation check http://www.3000ad.com/cgibin/ultimatebb.cg...ic&f=1&t=000554 Hope this helps.
  10. There should be a command line in your autoexec.bat file that reads something like SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D3 H7 P330 T6 These are the settings that Windows really uses when running DOS based sound. (BTW, A=Address, I=interupt, D=low DMA, H=High DMA.) There should be a second file loaded called sbeinit.com. (dosdrv should be in the path) When possible,(some system bios don't have this feature) I set CMOS up so that the IRQ used by the Sound Blaster emulator is Legacy ISA device vs. PCI/ISA or plug n play. Try uninstalling and zapping the install folder again. Install the game to the default folder. Run the sound setup (using the short-cut created during install) and see if sound will work. Use the settings in the Autoexec.bat file.
  11. What are your sb 16 DOS emulation drivers set to? And under Device Status does it show that the device is working properly? (System Properties, Device Manager) ** if you don't know how to do the above** right-click my computer icon left-click properties left-click Device Manager Tab left-click the + sign next to Sound, video and game controllers double left-click on SB16 Emulation (may be named or worded differently. looking for the DOS driver) Verify that Device Status shows "This device is working properly" left-click on resources tab Note the Input/Output Ranges, first number of each group is all that is needed Also note the DMAs and IRQs
  12. Out of curiosity, what are your dos settings (base I/O, IRQ, & DMA) for your sound card? Do you have a network card installed? (whether it's used or not)
  13. Wold

    Welcome

Welcome Aboard! [rp] Now if I could keep these blasted lemmings out of my navigation system I'ld be able to show up more often.... [/rp]
  14. Gallion, me thinks the [/rp] in your post was 1 paragraph too late. [rp] “Its your dime Wold, don’t waste it.” I wonder if this is just a quick 'commander capability test' or just posturing....hummm A slow, lazy smile crosses Wold's face as he starts in. "IMO, Gallion, whatever 'dime' that is spent elimiating, enhancing, or providing options is never wasted, and that is what I have in mind: Options." After several seconds of silence, the mischievious malicious grin that Gallion was sporting changes to a slightly more serious grin and Gallion gestures for Wold to continue. "Savage's ending statements disturb me. IF he has a 'plan' it is going to be so full of holes you could put a Gammulan Super Carrier battle group through it undetected. Frankly, I want to accomplish this mission and get out alive. "Why should I care and what does this have to do with me?" Gallion responds with impatience begining to creep into his voice. Leaning back and grinning maschieviously with a twinkle in his eye, "Plenty, I should think. You see, York mentioned that you have a slight, er, difficulty with Galcom." Raising his hand, "Please, Gallion, let me finish first. York didn't go into details as we didn't have time and he figured to leave that up to you. However, I do know enough to know that I can help you, the degree would vary depending on what you want done. Perceived 'truth' can be a powerful tool or weapon." Wold reaches behind his chair and pull out a black plastic item roughly the size of a 20th century laptop. "This doesn't exist. It may look common and definately ugly, but it isn't. You see, I was once a 'guest' of Earthcom's banned medi..." Wolds voice turns low and rough as unbidden horrific memories attempt to rush in. His voice chopping off as an internal fight ensues to keep the split personalities in check. Body shudders heavily as his face gets a haunted, hollow look while mummbling to himself 'NO, not yet... your time will come to be loosed you must wait!' Gallion, having seen a lot in his years of service, feels an involentary shiver run up his spine. Closing his eyes and shaking his head as if to clear the cobwebs, Wold makes a very visible effort to get control back, coughs, and continues, "medical experiments. They were rather unpleseant. In the process of excaping I aquired a unige tool, this 'toy' if you will. " "I don't have time for in-depth details at this time, but I will say this. Standard security issues, you know ship systems, peronnel records, military police records, etc, are a cake-walk for this box.. Most security systems, 3 strikes and an alarm goes off. With this box, I'm in by the second try." "Problem with Earthcom, they don't use standard security. They want to scan live body parts for admittence to any thing. You, Gallion, being a Galcom officer, are in their systems. Working as a team....course 'if' Galcom is looking for you we'll just have to leave them a false path...freedom of movement will become far less restrictive and escape options more abundant. " Wold finishes off, "BTW, just so you know, the box is genetically coded for my use only, dead body parts won't work." [/rp] Your turn Gallion. Ping-pong anyone? [ 05-01-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]
  15. [rp] Judging from that look directed to Gallion there appears to be no love lost between those two. Wold's thoughts turn back to Savage asd he relents a bit and begins dishing out detail. “That’s it? That’s all the detail you are going into?” Wold asks, barely keeping the bite out of his voice. quote:“As I said, you will be briefed on the exact specifics nearer to the mission time. You got a taster of whats to come, and that’s your lot. In truth, there are still some details that need to be ironed out. Certain things that our operatives on the surface are trying to determine at this very moment. There is a high likelihood that things will not go as planned, which means you will have to act on your own inititive to get the job done.” This last statement leaves Wold a bit stunned. Not because of what wasn't said, but because of what was said. Details to be ironed out? And surface things to still be determined?? Things are likely to NOT go as planned. No kidding. You got to HAVE a plan before that can happen. How can a mission be planned w/out no friggin' details? What hardware's going to be needed? Oh, yea, just hop over to the local SpaceMart and grab your pre-packaged battle hardware kit. Guaranteed to have everything you need including body bags with a form letter (postage not included) for your loved ones. Rattler must have been in his den too long to get involved with this Yahoo on a "mission" like this! The caustic sarcasim in Wold's mind was enough to melt deck plates if it had leaked out. Turning his head he notices Gallion and his shadow leaving and makes a spontaneous decision to catch up with them. As Wold gets within 2 meters behind them York suddenly whips around stepping in front of him. Gallion, deep in thought didn't notice anything for several seconds. Yorks sudden defensive action prompts a fleeting thought I wonder where Mel is... Maybe I should put her on my payroll. "Ah, look, I'm friendly. Was just going to get a quick bite and wanted to know if you and Gallion would join me?" Gallion, turning around noticed that Wold was holding a folded hard-copy as if a written invitation was being given. [/rp] [ 04-29-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]
  16. Just catching up.... [rp] The sudden change from pod to cargo bay at gun point takes a few seconds to register in Wold's thought process. Wold's short term memory had holes in it, but it was only a few hours that ran between the first briefing of the mission and when Donaldson had flushed some of those drugs from his system. The last series of events where extremly clear in his mind mind. Blinking he looks around the cargo bay and has his sees Savage, his temper begins to flare again as thoughts take a different channel. NO thank you, no gratitude, nothing from Savage for yanking his tail out of the fire while risking my own life--for the enemy no less. Nope, just critisism. Mel had preped the pod and had done her best w/ only seconds to work with. WHY did I yank Savage's arse out of that collapsing bridge? So engrosed in his thoughts and thinking he should have throttled Savage when he had the chance, he missed the bemused expression on Savage's face. A sharp jab in his lower back causes Wold to turn and upon doing so sees his faithful shadow standing there. "Look, I don't mind keeping you from innocent shipmates, but I'll be danged if I'm going to play pack mule for you." With that Mel drops a duffle bag at Wold's feet. "I'll find a room." And with that, she heads off. Knowing he needs to fill in mental gaps, Wold takes a few seconds to scan the room and takes a brief mental of those present.[/rp]
  17. Silcon Motion Lynx EM video card could be your problem. Laptop video cards tend to be modified and take oem drivers. Do you have the latest driver from gateway? I haven't heard of this video card, has anyone else?
  18. ROFL!! You 3 are hysterical! Quite the BMP (bad mental picture) you all created there.....
  19. True Tac. But, IMO 80% of the time it's the main board that's fried so that's why I yank everything first. Tac mentioned static and necessity of grounding. He's right. For those who are unfamiliar with how to do that..... A static strap really should be used along with a mat. Most users don't have them laying around and if you don't know what I'm talking about, you won't have one. Use the following method to ground yourself if you don't have a static strap. This isn't the best method, but it is better then none. If possible move the PC to a room w/out carpet. Before touching ANY boards, touch the case on any unpainted metal area. Remove the card and place it face (component side) down preferably somewhere on the case. Touch only the edges of card and the mounting bracket. DONT touch the back side of the card or the GOLD colored edge (contacts) IF ADDING a card: place new card, still in anti-static package, on the PC case. Keeping constant contact with the case, then open the package and remove the card by the mounting bracket. WHY all this headache? Simple movement of an arm w/ certain fabric and one becomes a static stun-gun. Remember: With today's soft-touch power up systems there is ALWAYS power to the systemboard even when it is "off". Which means, NEVER plug anything into the motherboard when the AC power cord is plugged into the PC. Unless of course you are looking for an excuse to buy new hardware. Even better, but a few more steps: Unplug the PC Disconnect the powersupply cables to the motherboard (should be 2 cable bundles) Plug the AC powercord back in. Why? This keeps the PC case truely grounded, assuming house wiring is correct. DO the necessary work, add/remove cards etc, constantly touching the pc case. Unplug the AC powercord Reconnect the powersupply cables to the motherboard (both of them) Install cover and plug the AC power back in. There, if that was as clear as mud I'm sure I can make it worse! [ 04-21-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]
  20. Welcome to our land of insanity! Of course the lurkers are watching/reading....the shear volumes of laughter they get reading our posts of wisdom.... Better to keep quiet and appear wise then open mouth and remove all doubt.....
  21. It should be full screen..... It would be much easier to help you if we knew your system specs.... Operating system, Battlecruiser version, Video card mfg, computer mfg, sound card, etc.
  22. Thankyou for your vote of confidence there Jaguar, but I'm not sure that I'ld go quite that far. Fact is I almost busted my spleen from laughing when I read that line. Steve, I'ld have to say that your problem has probably been covered in the above posts. Gateway isn't the only one that formats the drive and reloads to factory defaults...that's SOP for most of those tech support lines. In my experience hard drives, CD Roms, Zip Drives, CDRW, and DVDs all have their own internal POST (power on self test) and their activity lights will flash (regardless of motherboard, CPU, memory, or bios status) during this test. Pop the top off that pc and see if your fans are kicking on. IF not, then that CPU is sure to be fried. When facing your issue, I do what Tac suggested, but in reverse. I remove EVERYTHING then add memory, then video card, etc. back in, 1 at a time. May your PC ills be short lived....
  23. Well, Happy Future Birthday Akuma!! And the pic....
  24. Don't want much do you? Do a quick web search or search the MFGs site of those chips and you can get some comparisions. Keep in mind that motherboard, video card, sound cards, and memory can have major impacts on speed ratings. You will get more bang for the buck if you go w/ a refurbished unit. Some refurbs come with the same warranty package as brand new units. Anyway, w/ that price range corners are going to be cut in what you get. You are going to have to choose which corners you are willing to clip. Each mfg and even different models will take a varied approach. 1. Warranty. Most companies require the laptop to be sent in for repairs. If that is the case, you are looking at 2 to 5 weeks for a repair. Dell, for the Insperon and Latitude series has on-site service, I don't know about the other mfgs. Laptop replacement parts are not at your local computer store. 2. Check the software requirements that you will be running for recommended/required hardware. Keep in mind that some laptops will only run specific operating systems. Just because it is new and runs ME doesn't mean that it will run 98se, NT 4.0 or Win 2000, Linux, etc. 3. DVD requires a decoder--hardware or software. Any laptop that comes w/ a DVD player will have a decoder, just verify what type it is. If it is using a software decoder then you need at least 128mb ram. 4. You mentioned sales. If you are running demos for multiple people with out using a projector then you are going to need a large screen with an active type display. The screen will need to be visible from any angle. Of course, that means privacy when using it goes out the window. 5. Check the video 'card' chipset as you won't be able to change out the card. You might be able to add more video memory. 6. Communications.... Need ethernet? Modem? Token Ring? These devices can be add via the PCMCIA slots. 7. Some laptops are thin and neat, but all devices are attached externally...IE cdrom/dvd and or floppy come seperately and are attached using an adapter cable. Suggestion: Make a list of absolute requirements needed. That will limit the field of choices. Next, make a list of desired options and rank them from most important to least important. The laptop that fills the most requirements/options gets bought. I have NO idea what exactly you need to use your machine for so am not going to say which laptop to get. However, I hope that the above suggestions will be helpful. Happy Hunting!
  25. [rp] Sprinting to the bridge Wold had aquired an emergency plasma tourch, used for cutting out trapped crew members. He knew it would take too long, but it was better then beating on the door w/ his fist. What he needed was....Something caught his eye. Skidding to a halt, he backs up and sees a boarding charge attached to the hatch. Hitting the release switch he snatches it from the hatch and heads to bridge. Reaching the bridge he slaps the charge onto the hatch and punches the button. 15 seconds later she blows. Commander Savage's 'luck' was holding better then he thought. He had bearly uttered the word 'bummer...' when the charge blew launching the hatch into the bridge area inches above his head. The shockwave from the explosion punched him in the chest and flipped him onto his back. Bolting onto the bridge Wold yanks Savage off the floor across his shoulders in fireman's carry position and makes a bee-line for cargobay 1. Jumping into the cargo pod as it closes up Wold mutters to Savage "I sure do hope you have someone out there that will pick this thing up." In the dark and tight space they fumble with the emergency vac suits each with their own thoughts..... [/rp]
