  2. Thanks SC...I was aware of the attack angle, but I found that no matter how shallow it was, when I reached a certain altitude the speed would be halved regardless of my angle of attack. I'd be busting along at 800+ then hit about 16000 ft and wham the speed would drop dramatically. Then I'd crawl up to 19000 or so and thats all she wrote. It only happened on one trip, so I'm not too worried about it. As for towing it, yeah I though about that, but decided to start a new game since I had already lost two shuttles. Oh well..I'll just be very careful from now on (until I can upgrade my engines.)
  3. Yeah I noticed the same thing. After hustling to Velari with a load of iridium I was horrified to find it's inflation at 0%. Here's hoping it kicks in soon...I need some moola! In the meantime I'll stay close to home and mine the Moon (of course I stuck dink marines in my shuttles to deploy the drones and two of those idiots crashed). Ah...life in Derek's Universe.
  4. Nah you can do it MFH!!!. Remember, Space, the Final Frontier. Your job is to boldy go where no man has gone before. The reason there are no missions in ROAM is because they create themselves. No you won't be doing escort (though you could if you imagine it's required), but if you just hop in your ship and head for a planet or solar system the game will give you plenty to deal with. Set out to explore and mine distant worlds, take a Flux field (if you survive you will be guaranteed a story to tell just attempting to get back to Galcom). Imagine you've recieved an SOS from a planet and go investigate. Or simply cruise the Universe enforcing your race's rules. As Galcom Military one of my first tasks after beefing up is to go take out Pixan station, it's a good way to disrupt enemy supply lines. I do this as a way to protect my trade route to Velari in Polaris. Simply keeping the trade route safe and clear is plenty of work. Once you play this way you'll never want to be fed a scenario.
  5. Man, it never used to be this hard getting a CC off a planet. I spent hours trying to get my BCMK3 to leave Earth to no avail. My ship wasn't damaged (it had been but I fixed it), AP was useless as it just hung in the air quivering like it couldn't decide what to do. I was able to top out at about 19500 before the ship lost all momentum and thrust. I even silently chanted "I think I can, I think I can" to myself. No go. Anyone else find it this hard? My short term solution is to not bring my CC planetside, but that sucks. [ 02-09-2004, 08:17 AM: Message edited by: Grizzle ]
  6. I had this problem too, when I ran at 1280x1024. I knocked back to 1024x768 and the flicker is gone.
  7. The choice is ultimately yours and depends upon your playing style. Carriers are generally slower but have more crew and extra vehicles. Cruisers are generally smaller, faster and have fewer crew. Most important, regardless of ship, are upgrades...you NEED them. If you're going to do ROAM I'd suggest you go Military and play the part of explorer. If you use an explorer class ship you're a sitting duck.
  8. The cruisers seem a lot slower than in BCMG (or is this just my imagination?). It may also be that I'm just missing the afterburners, badly. It also seems that the enemy is far more lethal (I guess this is part of the action oriented approach.) I tried out one of the marine scenarios, did well until I crashed into the sea. Wouldn't you know those pesky Insurgent Aircraft were STILL trying to shoot me while I was swimming towards a base??!?! But I am finding it hard to land without using AP, so I let my crew try it and they promptly buried my cruiser upside-down in a hillside. I took the opportunity to run through the woods to a nearby city. Zooming over the landscape using my jetpack was exhilarating. And the approach to the city through the woods...oh my...how cool is that. I'm loving the new terrain engine SC...it's awesome. In fact all of the improvements are great!
  9. Do my eyes deceive me or is that a Battlecruiser Generations splash screen I see!!! As far as WASD goes, I think I'll like it. It took me forever to break the habit when playing BCMG and I would still always hit those keys from time to time. That being said, I'm missing 'max thrust' and 'zero thrust' keys. Only spent a few minutes with it before I got destroyed, but I liked what I saw, a lot. I'm sure I'll have plenty more praise after a few hours and a planet side trip. Quick points: Awesome new models and textures. I like the look of the new interface. Not sure about the phasing issue with the sound (hollow, reverb like). OOOOH I like the new 'docks' in Galcom (I can hide in there) I wanna zoom CLOSER when in external view!! more to come...
  10. Well this is f'd up. I still plan on purchasing UC in the hopes that this will all change. Provided there is speedy litigation, will you support UC if you make money through the law suit? It sounds to me as if you are washing your hands of it all and consider UC to be a dead product even before it's released. Can't say I blame you SC, but it sucks BIG-TIME.

  13. Please keep us posted on this Derek. I fear I may need to cancel my pre-order if they actually do ship it. I don't want to pay for a piece of useless software.

  15. The most important advice one could give you about your career choice is to do what you enjoy doing. Spindoktor is right. Join up with a gaming company and all you have to worry about is 1's and 0's. That being said, the potential always exists to lose any job. Save your money for those times and you'll be fine.
  16. Don't sweat it SC. Sounds like the game is 99.999% ready to go anyhow and I don't see any of the issues as show stoppers. I'm looking forward to playing it with or without the fixes! As for any "negative press" that might result from this, I think you know as well as I do that it is unfortunately "hip" to bash the franchise. Regardless of the state of the game at release there will be plenty of people waiting to slam it no matter what. My advice? Take a break (I know you could use one), enjoy the Holidays and release the patch when it's done. No one (that matters) will be any worse for the wear.

  18. quote:Originally posted by Popper100: very nice, but what do you think truly happened aboard your ship (invisible intruder?) I'm really not sure, hence the psych eval. I heard some of my crew mumbling about "situational awareness", and to tell the truth I was so stunned when it happened I did lose control of the situation. I was carrying a load of minerals at the time but the RE never notified me of dangerous levels at any time prior to the explosion so I don't think that's it. She only warned me about it when I left Galcom to see if I could replace my main comp. We all know a certain CO doesn't always do his job so well, so the intruder theory is possible. But I find it hard to believe one could make it all the way to Deck 1 without being detected. If I had more info I might be able to figure it out, but commlink is down too so I can't read any messages. I wonder if the main comp is located directly above the cargo bay...an explosion there could have ripped through all the decks above it. In any event, the shear fact that something like that happened is a testament and tribute to the games mechanics and AI.
  19. Feeling perhaps a bit too overconfident with my recent promotion to Fleet Commander, I ordered my Nav Officer to plot a course for Sygan. I wanted to do a fly by to check on the reconstruction of the recently destroyed Pixan station in Lennen. The GCV-TinCan jumped into Lennen and subsequent scans showed that progress on Pixan was going slowly, I would have to wait to attempt to capture it until later so we moved onward to Sygan with the intent to destroy Syganstar. We encountered little resistance along the way and upon arrival in Sygan, it appeared to be much the same situation. There were a few space marines floating around the station, but no other threats were scanned. I ordered the ship cloaked and set course for a jump to the station. The battle went as smoothly as it had for the previous destruction of Pixan and in a few minutes Syganstar was destroyed. I lingered a moment trying to capture a cargo pod that somehow found itself inside the burnt out structure and was therefore not able to be collected. "Set course for Zilon" I barked at the Nav Officer. It was my intent to clear out enemies from Syrius to Barnards Star. During the jump, the klaxon blared and two Ravens jumped in from Barnards Gate. "Piece of cake" I thought. Determined to make the insurgents sorry they chose to pick on me today, I ordered missiles targeted at the unsuspecting Ravens. Cranking the PTA's to full power I prepared to leave hyperspace and mince the audacious fighters. "What are they thinking?. Didn't they know I just took out two Star Stations? Dropping out of HS the missiles launched and combined with my PTA's to make short work of both Ravens. As I began to tell my Navs Officer to resume course, my words were drowned out by Mother declaring "Warning... Acquired". A quick scan showed two Defenders making a beeline towards my ship. "Mosquitos!...ha!" Eager to make short work of these nuisances, we engaged them. They put up a good fight and I found it hard to get a good enough bead on them to do any serious damage. They hadn't even come close to breaching my shields, but they used evasive manuevers the likes of which I've never seen. In my zeal to destroy these pests I had forgotten I was close to a jumpgate and before I knew it, a Garid had jumped in and let loose some of it's fighters. I managed to take out two of the fighters and put some big dents in the hull of the Garid whom by now was playing cat and mouse with my carrier. "He doesn't seem very aggressive" I thought. In fact, he was now targeting a Warmonger that had apparently jumped in unnoticed. As I set course to follow and end the Garid Commanders career I was surprised to see the GCV-TinCan light up like a Christmas tree accompanied by the deep thumps of laser fire as it clashed with my shields. A Firestorm had managed to sneak in at some point and threatened to rip me apart. Evasive manuevers prevented my shields from getting breached and I began to relax a bit and focus on my new adversary when I was suddenly interrupted. "Warning..Hull integrity breach...Cargo Bay 1 destroyed, Main Computer destroyed..." On and on it went as I scrambled to figure out what had happened. By now, the surrounding space was full of fighters and a few Capital ships. I tried to access Tactical to assess the damage but the system was down as was logistix, navitron and commlink. Fearing the worst I ordered a jump into the next system. I needed time to decide a course of action. The jump was made successfully, just narrowly missing the missles that had been launched at my tail as I ran. I cloaked as soon as we arrived in Zilon to prevent any followers from locking on to me. I took a deep breath and tried to figure out what went wrong. I could have sworn my shields held, but yet I had sustained some serious damage to critical systems. "Intruders perhaps?" A quick check of Perscan didn't show any intruders. There wasn't a whole lot more I could do to evaluate the situation without the ships computers functioning so I ordered the ship to head for Galcom HQ. Perhaps I could dock and get a better grasp on what happened. During the return I was careful to avoid any conflicts and continued to try and figure out what went wrong. I noticed that two of my mines were spent and I hadn't done it. I began formulating ideas. Was it sabotage? Arriving at Galcom HQ, I continued to sweat about what to put in my report. The stations systems showed that Cargo Bay 1 was destroyed along with the main computer. Other systems and some of troop quarters had taken damage but none of it was that significant. From all appearances it looked as if my mines had been used to sabotage the ship. The fact that the main computer was destroyed while other systems on that deck only sustained minimal damage lent more creedance to the sabotage theory. But I had found no intruders nor had I been notified we had been boarded. After some repairs my research engineer began bleeting about unsafe levels of Krytptonium etc... in the cargo bay area. So I'm left with three possibilities, either my shields were momentarily breached and a few well-placed shots struck me down with surgical precision or some intruders had boarded, stolen two mines and blew up my cargo bay and main computer or I had a bad mix of minerals and chemicals stored in CB1 that had become unstable and exploded. Glacom HQ is now rethinking their praise and my recent promotion as I am unable to give an adequate report. I had lost everything in the cargo bay and since my main computer was destroyed the ship is irreparable. The Galcom engineers refuse to fix it or replace it and despite the fact that tactical is 100% I cannot access it outside the station since the main computer is dead. Galcom has ordered me for a psychiatric evaluation since I cannot explain the loss of my ship and I've just recieved notification of demotion. Galcom is willing to provide me with a new ship, but I lose any rank gained during my short career and have to start as a fresh recruit from command school.
  20. Well...I try to keep it to about 2 hours, but often find myself around 3 or 4 when all is said and done. You know how it goes..."I'll just jump into the next system and find a safe spot to sit and log off." *jumps* WARNING...ACQUIRED.
  21. Got it, played it and the only thing I got out of it was a desire to play BCMG!!!!(which I did ) Sure, it looks great but it doesn't give me that immersive feeling like BCMG does.
  22. quote:Originally posted by Extinct_Reptilia: Do you have this program Grizzle? Do you have a BCM command set? I would really like to get that command set from yah if you've made one! I made one. It's not a full profile, but it has most of the important/logical commands. It's not hard to add or change whats already there, but to save you some time grab it here. It's for BCMG, filename BCMG.gcc. Note: Some of them I made as toggles. For example "Passive Scan" and "Active Scan" are two different modes but use only one key command so it's essentially the same thing. Saying "Passive Scan" while radar scan is active will turn it off, but so will saying "Active Scan" Anyhow, knock yourself out (and use headphones because sometimes the ships voice trips a command.)
  23. Saitek X45 - the GOD of all flight controllers. The saitek drivers SUCK though. But fortunately some nice young man saw fit to write his own and post them on the net so I use those. It's got more buttons, modes and axes than you can shake a stick at (no pun intended) and it looks really cool to boot. Of course, I use the mouse to play simply because I find the mouse to be more accurate. Do yourself another favor and get Game Commander. Barking orders for TACOPS, TARGET ENEMY, JAMMER, Engage hyperdrive etc. adds more dimension to the game.
  24. Looks puurrdy SC! All the new models are really sweet!
