Are you jumping out of the region while the shuttle is still in the debris field? This has also been known to cause a crash. Debris fields are dynamically generated, and they are destroyed when the battlecruiser leaves the region. If you have a ship in there when the BC leaves, it causes a crash.

If you are crashing as soon as you press the SAVE button, this problem has been known to be caused by out-of-date mouse drivers. Try updating your mouse driver and see if the crash goes away.

The time acceleration feature was removed from BC3K around version 2.04 or so. It is not in the current 2.09 version. The only artifact of it that remains is the 1x that displays on the screen. It was removed because it interfered with the AI processing, as well as for future planning of the online multiplayer version. This is also why station repair was made realtime. Everyone has to play by the same clock. You can't dock at a station and have 3 hours worth of repair take place in an instant while the rest of the universe is chugging along at real time.

Galactica itself became a beat-down series once they put that whiz-kid into the plot. It was one thing to have Lorne Greene as the fleeing Senator-cum-President leading a ragtag fleet of refugees to a mythical Earth. Lots of drama there. But when the whiz-kid was added, every adult became a dolt and nobody risked doing anything without first seeing what the genius had to say about it. I think the last good episode was the one that stranded Starbuck on the planet forever.

Naahhh... Tac, Tom Seimans, Rattler, and few others (more than you think or I can remember) are older. I was registered on the original board as Steve, but I forgot my password when Derek migrated to the new boards so my records weren't maintained. I reregistered with my current date. Aramike registered shortly after I reregistered. I may have been following the game before most people, but I didn't get a Pentium computer until 1999, so I was playing vicariously through others. I was able to play the free version on my work computer when it was still Windows 95, but we switched to NT a month later, so I went without again for another year.

Kush, The author was obviously parodying the movie Apocalypse Now, where Martin Sheen is sent into the deep jungles to find out what happened to Marlon Brando, a fellow officer who was rumored to have started a cult of followers who would defend him to the death. Sheen's mission was to terminate Brando with extreme prejudice. The reviewer lifted names from this site to use in his story.

You said you removed the CD-Rom drivers from device manager. Do you mean that you removed the entire device or just drivers? You should be able to remove the device, then click refresh and let the system find it again. This might cause it to re-install the drivers as well. Are you running with a config.sys and autoexec.bat? If so, try removing them (renaming them) and let windows run with the defaults.

I think I've get the best post of all. I first became aware of BC3K when it was the cover story on the May 1994 special sci-fi issue of Computer Gaming World. This issue compared 95 sci-fi computer games that were written to-date. I bought the issue for the sci-fi roundup, not the BC3K story, but was impressed by what I read and followed its progress ever since. Rereading the article is a hoot. There are even screen shots from the program as it was in 1994! TRADCOM is there, as well as the bridge view, and even an interceptor view of the planet's surface. Follow-up to my story: My replacement monitor arrived today from Gateway and it works fine, so the problem was the monitor and not my Voodoo3 card. However, Gateway has not made any business that I've had to conduct with them easy. The monitor was still under warranty, so replacement was free. When I came home from work there was a UPS sticker on my front door. The sticker said that the monitor was delivered with a $62 COD. I called Gateway to inquire and they said that they had no record of me owing any money on this, so it had to be a UPS deliverer error. I went to the UPS center to get my monitor and sure enough, the sticker on the box said $62 COD. The Gateway customer service rep did mention that the records indicated that the package was 62 pounds in weight. Hmmmm... UPS would not release the package unless Gateway faxed a letter on company letterhead stationary releasing me of the COD charge. I again called the customer support number (several times) but I must have gotten a series of North Dakotans who only know how to milk cows because they either didn't understand my situation or they blew me off. One rep said that she'd send the fax, but after 20 minutes nothing arrived. I called another rep and after 10 minutes on the phone she transferred me to a business office that closed 2 hours earlier. After 2 hours at the UPS office, I finally got a Gateway supervisor willing to take responsibility and fax the release letter. While waiting, the Gateway customer support supervisor said that they usually charge $65 for shipping purchased monitors, so UPS might have screwed up somehow reading a smudge as a $65 COD. I told her that I saw the shipping label and it clearly had a $62 COD charge which was coincidently the same as the weight of the shipment. Perhaps someone in their shipping department put the weight in the wrong box on their computer system. Regarding my other story, the stitches come out tomorrow.

Here's one of the human kind... My wife's aunt passed away over the weekend (her mom's sister was in her 80's), so I booked my wife on a flight from San Francisco to New York City, connecting through Dallas. This morning, as I was preparing some coffee to take on the drive to the airport, I dropped the jar and it shattered on the kitchen floor, a sharp edge cutting a 1 inch gash on the side of my left foot. Luckily it was early in the morning and the hospital was on the way to the airport. We went to the ER where they stitched up my foot and we made it to the airport in time for my wife to catch her flight. Meanwhile, her brother is also flying into New York from San Diego via Denver. As you may know, a big storm is hitting the northeast today, and all of American's flights from Dallas to New York were canceled. I was able to book my wife into a hotel at the airport, but her brother's flight from Denver took off for New York. I'm sure they'll divert him somewhere else, but we were coordinating schedules so they would arrive at La Guardia at the same time. So I'm home by myself for a week with stitches in my foot, and my monitor went bad last week and my old 14" one works okay but since my hardware configuration changed, BCM won't run!! Not now!!!!

Fistmaster: Thanks for the heads up. I just hooked up an old 13" monitor to test the video card and it works fine. Therefore, it is my Gateway monitor. I just got off the phone with their customer support and they're sending a new one out right away.

Kush, Nobody's disagreeing with anything you've said. It's just that this topic comes up with each new generation of fans. And believe me, people here know the attitude that their giving off. In the old days it was a sport, but we've matured a lot since then. But I guess the deepest truth of these posts this time around is that if BC:M explodes on the marketplace to such degree that it dwarfs what BC3K ever did, then this place will go from being the cozy little community that it's been to being a big noisy metropolis with thousands of participants who just want their questions answered. When that happens, maybe the private beta forum could be converted into a private elders' club where we can retreat from the newbies and commune amongst ourselves.

You don't have to worry about whiners and detractors. This is a highly moderated site and anyone who is not here to help advance the enjoyment of the BC universe will get permanently booted back to the alt.xxx usenet forums. Everyone here is more than willing to help those who first try to help themselves. This isn't as bad as yours, but my video is slowly dying and I'm not sure if it's my Voodoo3 card or my monitor. My system is only two years old (that's like 200 for you and me). The image is getting darker and darker. I have the brightness and contrast turned up to the max on the monitor and I pushed the 3dfx color brightness up a notch, too. When I first start up, the screen is not exactly bright, but it gets darker as the computer is running. As soon as I have some free time, I'm going to take it down to the local Gateway store where I can plug my computer into one of their monitors and my monitor into one of their computers to troubleshoot where the problem is. What makes this so aggravating is that I can't play BC:xx right now because everything is so dark that I can't distinguish any details. This isn't the best time to not be participating in this community. Hopefully, next weekend I will have time to troubleshoot my system. I believe that everything is still covered by the 3-year warranty on parts and labor, but I don't need the hassles right now.

Mike, That very same situation happened to me just last night!

I never thought that with today's technology that I'd succumb to the when I was a kid..., but at age 41.6, when I was a kid (and still to this day) I played all sorts of Avalon Hill and SPI board games (mostly solitaire). I must have close to 30 of them.
