memory problem

Howdy ya'll. I know bc30000 isn't supposed to be supported any more but I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm crashing to the desk top and getting a memory allocation failure at animate.cpp, line 428. In properties I get a message saying EMS isn't enabled in ms-dos config.sys line device=emm386 keyword noems. I've read the faq and it says to edit this as necessary with the notepad, which I believe will fix the problem, but I don't know how to do this. I have a gateway with 750 MHZ processor, 100 MHZ front side bus, 128 MB RAM, TNT2 video card, which I know isn't supported, so it seems I have more than what I need. Please forgive my ignorance I'm just getting started in my learning of programing and as you can see I don't know squat. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance.

Which version of BC3000ad are you running? Current version is v2.09.

To get to the issue:

Open MSDos Window and do the fiollowing:

C:WINDOWS> [type]cd [then press enter]

C:>[type]edit config.sys [then press enter]

You are now able to edit the config.sys file of ye system. Careful errors can be hazardous. Look for the following line in the config.sys:

DEVICE=C:WINDOWSEMM386.EXE NOEMS

type rem at the beginning of the line

rem DEVICE=C:WINDOWSEMM386.EXE NOEMS

then type the following (or copy/paste/edit)

DEVICE=C:WINDOWSEMM386.EXE

Goto the menu, save file and exit program. Reboot system.

This will activate EMS though I fail to understanfd the need. I have a 733mhz, 256mb RAM - 133 FSB and 3d Prophet GeForce v-card. BC3000AD runs just fine - screams almost with NOEMS in config.sys.

Unless you have a 3dFx based v-card you will not be able to run BC3K in 3d mode - software only.

TNT2 Cards are supported. Check the Readme file and FAQ again.

run x:BC3000ADBC3000AD /v? and a list of supported v-cards will scroll down ye screen. There is close to 100 v-cards supported. TNT2 is one of them.

Thankx but still crashing with save right before TOD2 M4 I think getting ready to chase the Reingald. I am running V2.09 with mappak. Problem fixed with earlier saves though. Can I provide more info that is helpful? Once again please excuse my ignorance.

It's a fairly common niggle that is. When it happens to me, I curse my luck and restore a previous game. However, you could try saving to a different slot. Sometimes thats helped me, but the restoration of an earlier save is your best bet.

I too have been plagued by this problem in the past, hasn't happened to me for a long time. What Blades posted is the same thing I did to get past that moment in the game. Failed to work 100% of the time and had to delete the entire profile and start fresh in a different profile slot.

Use any of the other ones you choose, just not the top slot. Play your game and let me know if you still get this "annomoly". I'd really like to know the results. A memory problem is far removed from the Roster slot used, though I understand what Rattler is thinking. But that would be regarding saved games, not the in-game memory crashing issue.

The game uses a lot of memory due to the huge world. By TOD2/M4, a lot has happened and now BC3K and WIN9x have to battle for memory. The only fix is to ensure that the memory settings for the shortcut (especially the 3DFX one) are correct. With a 128MB of memory, you should have no memory problems and if you get that problem on that particular line of code, it means that

1. you are running other WIN9x programs which are chewing up the memory pool

2. you have not configured the config.sys according to the FAQ

3. you have not configured the DPMI and other memory settings in the shortcut, according to the FAQ

I would suggest that you load your config.sys into Notepad, use the copy function, then paste it into a reply here. Do the same with the autoexec.bat file. Then, we'll know what is in those 2 files and we can better help you configure them. In fact, someone might even putting the proper settings for you and send new files via email. The guys in this forum are pretty good at going the distance, so, just let them know what kind of help you need.

I really appreciate this people and to have the SC help me himself I am honored. You keep producing the timely and direct help I have come to expect over the last three years I have been lurking in these parts. As for the autoexec.bat file, I do not know what this GOBACK program does. The rest is okay, so leave it as it is.

One word about BC3K memory settings, though: You have to set the shortcut properties as explained in the FAQ:

Memory - Total = AUTO

Initial Environment = 4096

EMS memory = AUTO

XMS memory = AUTO

Uses HMA = ON

DPMI memory = AUTO (set to 16384 if you only have 32MB or less RAM in your machine)

Screen - Full Screen = ON

Dynamic Memory Allocation = OFF

Misc - Allow screen saver = OFF

Always suspend = OFF

Idle sensitivity = LOW (all the way to the left)

Mouse exclusive mode = ON

That should do the trick!

Go back is a program that lets you return to an earlier configuration in case you screw something up and crash or erase important things even if you lock yourself out of your own pc. It has been very useful when trying something I don't understand.

Your config.sys and autoexec.bat files are the problem. Those two programs in autoexec.bat are definitely eating up the much needed conventional memory and besides, you don't have high mem enabled. All this definitely explains the memory crash you are getting.

I don't know how much memory GB_PROG or NAVDX use, but, before you comment them out, use these files. And when you start WIN9x, open up an MS-DOS window and type

mem /c | more > mymem.txt

Then, post the contents of the mymem.txt file, here. We can then decide if you should disable those first 2 lines in your autoexec.bat or not. btw, to create the piped output character, |, use shift+

I have edited the config.sys and autoexec.bat files as suggested but get nothing when typing mem/c|more>mymem.txt. SC I'm sorry about the thread in the General discusion but I didn't get much documentation with this thing and the website has been no help as well as I didn't want to pay 28 bucks for tech support from them which is supposed to be free. I was hoping that was a simple problem which was easy for someone to answer and I knew it didn't belong here since it wasn't game related. My appologies.

Open a MsDos Window and type the following command exactly as stated:

mem /c |more >mymem.txt

Then open the mymem.txt file in wordpad or other word processing application (note this will be located in the c:windows directory)

Copy the text contained in the file and post (via paste) on this topic.

I'd also like to see the new config.sys and autoexec.bat files. Because if you did this correctly (and disabled those 2 progs), you should have enough conventional memory. The only reason I wanted to see the memory output is to see what exactly is in low, high memory as well as how much is actually available.

mem /c | more > mymem.txt should be creating a text file called mymem.txt in your current directory. Since all output is going to the file, nothing will be displayed onscreen. Try opening that file.
