Hi guys! Seeing that another BC old timer (Gallion smile.gif) has posted a tech question, prompted me to pose one as well. I guess I was under the false impression the us old timers don't have tech questions!

My system specs are:

Celeron 500

Abit BE6-II mobo w/128 megs RAM

Diamond Viper 2 AGP card

Guillemot Maxi Gamer 3D2 Voodoo 2 PCI card

Creative X-Gamer Live! soundcard

...and the problem child Sidewinder Precision Pro Joystick

Now..I've played BC with no problems at all using my Gravis 2 button joystick. Several months back, I got the Sidewinder and it doesn't seem to want to work correctly with BC. I've recently being toying with it to get it to work.

Here's what it does:

After it's calibrated and I start to play BC, the view changes from the bridge to various exterior views of the ship by itself as if I were pushing the HAT. I constantly have to adjust the HAT to get back to the bridge view.

SC, I've done everything you have recommended in the Joystick Problems section of the Troubleshooting FAQ, including calibrating the stick ingame and creating the profile. Could the joystick be bad? Does someone who has the same joystick have a custom profile that they could send me?

Thanks in advance guys! For now, I'll just put the Gravis stick back on.

Hey Sho! Yep we "Old Timers" still have questions from time to time. Like I said in an earlier post on one of these forums, We still don't know it all yet! As for the Precision Pro, I'd say Gallion could probably answer that question. While down here last week he was using that joystick so evidently he has it figured out. wink.gif

OK Gallion, here's your chance to shine. Put on another coat of wax! smile.gif

Thank ye Rattler smile.gif

ShoHashi - yep I have the same gizmo that ye has the MS Sidewinder Precision Pro Joystick and it be a working with no problemo what so ever.

I am going to assume that ye are using a Sidewinder profile setup for BC and have it connected to a USB port somewhere (back of computer or on an USB Hub). I do not use one and just run the thing in BC joystick default mode.

Go back the Game Controller Software for Sidewinder and deactivate any active profile that is selected. While there checkout Sidewinder Control Center just to check joystick status within Winblows. Select Properties and everything should come up hunky dory.

Start BC and go to Config. Select Thrustmaster for joystick, Calibrate, etc. - ye know the routine.

The Sidewinder can be connected to computer either with USB or via the soundcard's or computer's Gameport/MIDI port. I connected mine via USB and have not had any lick of troubles.

If this does work then ye can go back into the Game Controller Software and reapply previous profile or make ye one.

TTFN and good luck smile.gif

Gave it a whirl, Gallion. Same problem. My view wants to constantly shift from the bridge to various outside views. It sounds almost dumb, but I'd swear that the HAT somehow needs calibrated. Oh well! Back to the Gravis, I guess!

Gallion-

I did configure the hat in the setup. I am not using the USB...using the gameport on the soundcard. I wouldn't think that'd be a problem, do you?

P.S. I hope you are having better luck with your Voodoo! smile.gif

ShoHashi, I have the same problem that you do, plus I can never get the throttle calibrated correctly.... It is plugged into my SB Live (Also it was the same on an SB AWE 32 before I upgraded). My solution.... I plug in my old 2 button CH Flightstick! >Spectre Fleet

Well ShoHashi, in theory using Gamport v. USB should bot be a problem. However, I was able to replicate the same woes the ye have been experiencing.

I disconnected my Sidewinder from USB, connected to Gameport on sound card, SB Live1! Platinum, and rebooted me overbooted system biggrin.gif - thats the Voodoo5 fer ye.

Anyway, went the calibration mode via control panel and in game . Wow, bloody hat went all over the place. Was seeing everywhere and nowhere at once. Went on a hunch, disconnected from Gameport and rebooted after attaching back to me USB hub strategically located on me cluttered desk.

Recalibrated Sidewinder in game and works like a charm. Check control panel and Sidewinder came up Sidewinder USB version vice plain old Sidewinder. Hat works as advertised and what not, just like my old Thrustmaster does/did - still around here somewhere I think.

Anyway the fix or fixes are this:

  • Connect Sidewinder to USB port or USB Hub via adapter that MS supplied within originally packaging. This is going on the assumption that one was offered else ye will have to find one somewhere.

  • Go to the Game controller software panel and map or program a profile for BC3K. See panel instructions and what not fer exact details. THere is a record and macro function available.

  • Final option - continue as ye are now.

I am having no problems what so ever using the Sidewinder Precision Pro (USB). Hat works like a charm along with several button configurations.

As to me Voodoo5 problems, yep ShoHashi - you are having better luck than I there smile.gif I am thuroughly perplexed with it. Through it all I have become rather fond of my little Voodoo doll eek.gif and have scrapped me 3d Prophet DDR-DVI for it. The V5 rocks over the 3d Prophet (first generation GeForce 256 card). But that is a different story that belongs else where.

I hope that this helps ye and those suffering the same problem with the SW-P Pro joystick.

Well, my hat is off to Gallion! After disconnecting the joystick from the X-Gamer Live! board, I connected it into the USB port. I then followed his advice and....Wa La!!! I can now fly my Battlecruiser without have my views changing while using my beloved Precision Pro!

Gallion...if you are ever in the area of New Frontier, stop in and I'll buy you an ale!

Thanks again!
