Can't even get to the title screen

Hi all,

I got the game as a secret Santa gift and the darn thing just doesn't want to run at all.

I've downloaded all the patches (it was v2.07), updated all my drivers (I'm using a stock compaq7360). Memory-wise, the computer claims the largest program size is 617,216 bytes.

The error is an Invalid Page Exception before the title screen even appears. The specifics are:

Fault Location: 0028:C0001FE7

Faulting Component: VMM(01)+00000FE7

The only thing I havne't been able to do from the FAQ is enabling EMS. I deleted the NOEMS line. Then, the computer wouldn't boot, and I don't know how to solve that problem.

Any ideas on where to go next with this?

Which version of Windows are you running? Windows ME isn't supported due to "advancements" by Micro*****.

Have you tried the exact config.sys file settings shown in BC3Kfaq?

Which BC3KAD shortcut are you using? You should be using the NON-3DFX shortcut.

Did you configure your sound? Did it test ok? This is done after the patches.

Which video card is your machine running? Right-click on My Computer->Left-click on Properties->Left-click on Device Manager->Left-click on + next to Display adapters.

OK, here's what you do:

First, uninstall the game, and delete the install folder manually.

Second, make sure of what version you have on the disk before you apply the patches. I'm not sure if you're saying that you've started out with v2.07 or patched to that. You want to patch to v2.09. So, assuming you're starting at 2.07, first download patch 2.07-2.08, followed by 2.08-2.09. Copy these patches to your BC3K install folder!!!

Then, all you have to do is apply the patches in sequence from the install folder. Configure the sound, and start the game in non-3DFX mode.

I had v2.09 already; I should have made that clearer. I did the uninstall and reinstall procedure, including patches. Now I get to hear one note of music and when that same error pops up, my screen has been resized to 640x480.

To answer Wold's questions:

Yes and I think so. The digital test starts off a little quiet until the word "Alpha" and is fine after then.

Thanks for all ideas so far. Is there any way for me to take a screen shot of the DOS mode right before I get kicked back to windows? I can see the word "ERROR" along with a lot of Hex junk, but it's too fast to get anything else. So, I can't read exactly WHAT error the program is telling me about.

Here's my config.sys file. As I said, I can't just lose the NOEMS line. Is there something I need to do first?

Well, first off, on the SHELL= line, change E=2048 to E=4096. The game needs environment = 4096. Also, check to see that the icon properties match the troubleshooting FAQ settings.

In all honesty, you do not need anything in your config.sys, or your autoexec.bat for that matter. Both of mine are empty, don't say nothing.

Let Win 98 handle all of those, your drivers will load just fine. Many here will disagree with me, but I have run with both of those empty since day one, those are DOS commands lines, not win98SE command lines.

Also, there is a command that makes the window stay open after a crash, I just cannot remember that command, any other commanders remember where that command is so that he can use it to tell us what the error is?

I also don't use any config.sys commands, so you might want to rename it to something else and let Windows default to its own drivers.

The command to keep the window open is a checkbox on the program tab on the properties dialog for the icon.

... In the same properties box, you will find a memory tab. In there you can check to see if the "initial environment" is set to 4096 - the number refered to earlier in this thread.

No, but you can remove that parameter from that line, for a start. And you can use the DOS= line as indicated in the FAQ.
