Can't get started. Help, please!

I have Battlecruiser3000AD v2.07.

I installed the game (in a folder with name of 8 characters or fewer). I then applied the 2.07-2.08 patch. I then applied the 2.08-2.09 patch. I then applied the maps patch. (all three successfully).

Upon launching the game, I am faced with a screen full of DOS-like jargon (none of which indicates any sort of error). The writing then turns a light blue color, and then becomes sort of orange. Afterwards, nothing. I am just left with a screen full of orange writing, and no game action.

I have Windows98, Compaq Presario 5000, Pentium III, 128MB RAM, with at least 2GB hard disk space. Intel 82810E Video Card Driver (with latest upgrade), and ESS Allegro Sound Card Driver.

I have never come across similar problems with a game before. Please help, if you can.

Try reading the " 'Please' Help" thread two doors down (at the moment).

Did the sound setup work?

Did it detect your vid card?

Hi again.

I have been reading the famed "Jag Uar" discussions (while waiting for membership approval), and they don't hold much insight (if any) into much of anything.

I have, since posting my help message, tried again to launch the game. Here's the skinny: I can't tell if the sound card or video card was detected (the scrolling is too fast). And in the final screen (the one with the writing that turns blue and then - my bad, not orange - purple) I have noticed this error message: "Cannot open specified INI file (HMISET.CFG)". That's the only malicious prompt in the entire screen. Everything else looks happy. In fact, at the bottom of all that writing, I find the line: "System files loaded ok". Not that that should mean much, but hey.

Out of curiosity, I wonder: My game folder is named ...BC 3000 Is this a valid name? Does the program have a problem with spaces in the name? When you count the space, it only adds up to 7 characters. Oh well.

What could possibly be going wrong? And... has anyone besides myself suffered multi-colored DOS nonsense?

If I have overlooked something blatantly helpful in previous help back-and-forths, please let me know. As I have already stated, I have taken all the preliminary precautions as described in the troubleshooting website (patches, etc.)

There was no indication in the Help file that BC 3000 should be invalid as a folder name (which was why I named it thus in the first place). But, anyhow, I followed the file's suggestion, and have since installed the game in the default directory (after uninstalling it, of course). I applied the patches in correct sequence. I launched the program... and, nothing (except for the identical multicolored nonsense I mentioned previously).

Which indicates to me two things:

The folder name wasn't the problem.

And I have a pretty box with a dud inside (or do I?).

The box is O so pretty, though.

Before you launch the program, you have to do the sound setup.

Also, are you trying to run it in software or hardware rendering?

It IS part of the problem. The other problem you are having is video related.
