Guest Ark-Combine Posted July 29, 2001 Report Posted July 29, 2001 Dled 2.09 via underdogs earlier today, and of corse immeadiately went to install it. the installer then tried to update my msi files i believe, and prompted me to restart. then promptly froze.i restarted to find that now when i try to install the program it says that it is an invalid windows installer program.if you want my sys specs n such i can provide them. yes i have win98. i DLed msi 1.5 from msdn.microsoft.com on the chance that my msi was currupted. no luck, same problem.i've read as many posts, doc's etc that i can get my hands on, from both fileplanet, underdog and this site/board that i can find. i must say that while i respect and sympathise with what has happened to this game i see a great deal of things that disheartens me surrounding it. i wish you all luck in your future endevors reguardless. i only hope that when files are provided to the public that wether they purchased a cd or not, some sembelence of support is provided. it just doesn't make sense to me to say "yes! you can all play my game for free! its the same that we released 3 years ago, or better!... but don't ask us for help if it doesn't work".but that is just my thoughts on it. good luck to you all, and if everything goes well we may see eachother in the future.*bows**edit* - sorry, i hit the wrong forum button. sorry for the inconvience, feel free to move it.[ 07-29-2001: Message edited by: Ark-Combine ]
Guest Hellbinder[CE] Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 WOAHHHHHHH there buddy,Even Quake when released was COMPLETELY unsupported. You cant release a 3 year old game, for FREE, help everyone with an issue, and still work on the current game. John Carmack wont do it, why would you expect Derek Smart to do it? John has a *lot* more resources at his disposal than Mr. Smart does. Also he never said he or others would not help. He said you are not "OWED" any help. He gave you one of the greatest games of all time for FREE, for crying out loud. He also just requested people not create NEW posts all over the place. You can still ask for help INSIDE one of the exsisting threads.ID software and other developers dont have their OWN message boards. They dont even hang out and REPLY at their games Fan boards. You would get the EXACT same treatment at from ANY of the major developers. I dont see other developers lining up to release a major retail Game for free. Get serious. BTW, that sounds like a WIN2000 error. BC3000AD does not run under win2000.[ 07-29-2001: Message edited by: Hellbinder[CE] ]

Guest Hellbinder[CE] Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 Good point, I missed that. That is the exact error I got when I tried in vain to install the game on My win2000 system. I know, i know, I just had to try. Thought I might be able to trick it with compatability mode.
Charles Lindsey Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 I have moved the topic. I remember an installer issue. Anyone else?
Guest Ark-Combine Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 i thank you for the input, and i understand that other games have been just as if not more bugridden then this one. paintball anyone?my issue with this is that they didn't turn around and attempt to redeem themselves later by giving the game away to teh fans that do want to play the game, and say that i hope you enjoy it! but don't come asking for help. what i took away from his long explanation on fileplanet was he wanted people to understand what happened, and i can sympathise with it. but it just makes no sense to me to come off with the attitude i've seen on various posts if you want people to see what happened to your game then.for example, i used to work a lot with customer service. if my store had a sale going on, and we didn't have the product we would try to do everything we could to explain that to a customer. we would tell them when we would have it coming in, what other stores had them etc. we wouldn't then turn around and be condensending to those who stuck around and waited for us to have that merchandise in stock. we would thank them for their patientence. see my point?do i claim to know everythign surrounding this game, company and derek smart himself? no. i'm making an observation, take it how you will.i will say, however. the more i read about this game the more impressed i am with it. and the more i want to play it. i've thought about going down and buying the disc, and upgrading it. but i don't remember seeing it in any store here. so it leaves me with a slight problem. i have to work with what i've been handed.my hats off to those who have stuck this out, from good times and bad and supported him. and again, best of luck in the future.send me an email if you'd like, i'd be more than happy to give you full system specs or anything you need at that end to try and solve what i think is an odd problem.*bows*
Charles Lindsey Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 Post your system's specs here and what you did to install. Perhaps one of the better guys on the forum could figure it out. Let the entire community try to help you. The game is officially NOT supported but several of us remember a quite a few things. Perhaps it was just a bad download. Read the previous threads in this forum and see if your answer is in there. Such a polite guy yet......
Guest Hellbinder[CE] Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 I dont know SC, maybe the answer is to just release the game Ziped. That way all anyone has to do is Upzip it with recursive Directories. The game v2.08/9 was not, and IS not bug ridden. The origional v1.0 release was. That was a long long time ago. Most of the time, from reading countless posts on this forum, The "problems" were due to people who a. Cant Read b. did not read the Manual c. Are used to playing "cookie cutter" games d. All of the above.Your case may be different. However no one can answer the same RTFM questions over and over again for 3 years and not draw the line somwhere. Especially when there are a ton of newbies like me asking a ton of RTFVCF questions about the new BCM game. [ 07-30-2001: Message edited by: Hellbinder[CE] ]
Guest Ark-Combine Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 Thank you, i always try to be polite... at least until i know you well enough to make fun of you Sys specs are as follows.Win 98 Second Edition, 4.10.2222A Micosoft Installer version, 1.5 - just updated. possibly updated to 2.0 on accident, but when i redid the 1.5 install things seemed to work our fine, said i already have the program installed.P3 750 128 mgs sdram (shared with the original vid, which is disabled) voodoo3 pci 16mgs 20gig HD, 5gigs free (yes i like games) running a cable connectionsWindows was updated with the critical updates package yesterday as apart of my atempt to fix this, and i'll try DLing the file itself again today. this time from Fileplanet (groan). In responce to your manual tiraid... if i felt this issue reflected anything that i would find in teh manual, i would dig it up off this site. i did go through the FAQs and saw nothing relivent. hence, my post when its said to be technically unsupported, which i have read many times (usually in red, sometimes bold) on this board. the other reason i reported it, was on the off chance that there was something wrong with the file on Underdogs itself, although this doesn't mak any sense. I've never seen a file spit back the error i got yesterday, and leaves me puzzled.*bows*
Guest Ark-Combine Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 ok, the fileplanet download worked, and its installing atm... i thank you for your help and the moving of this topic so i wasn't banned.now then, about these player fleets... jk, i'll look into it after i play the game for a while.*bows*
Supreme Cmdr Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 You might want to tell the Underdogs folks that they have a corrupted file? Assuming of course that was the problem?
Guest Ark-Combine Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 it seems to be the problem yes, and i will go ahead and send an email to them. since it is your file i went ahead and informed you here first.
