Medals in free flight?

I've been meaning to ask this question ever since I've been on this forum, but haven't gotten around to it. After capturing a starstation in Free Flight, I discovered that I had earned some medals. I thought there weren't medals in Free Flight. Is this just an oversight, or is my game corrupted?

No, I've never used PlayMod. If anyone has captured a starstation in free flight, please see if you have any medals. I did get promoted up to TacOps Commander.

Yeah, if you tell me what medal you got, I'll check the code.

Yep. He's right. I just checked the code. I added that sometime between 2.07 and 2.09. You get medals if you capture a station, in addition to EPs. That code is also in BCM, btw.

So, this must be in the VCF for BC3K I suspect.

You gotta tell us what you did and how you did it to capture those stations. Did you use the cloak and missile offense or the sit out and sucker the ships out and destroy them then go after the station, or did you just go with the straight suicide run on the station attack.

We need to know so that we can ALL try it in BCM!!!

And we can ALL DIE TOO!!! LOL

Before even attempting it, make sure you maxed out your shield upgrades. What I did was turn on the cloak before entering the system, then, close up to the station, about 25 clicks. Cut the throttle to nothing. Then decloack and start pummeling the station with your IOD (and Vagrant Missiles if you can afford them). Keep your PTA and EMD on to disrupt fighters and missiles. While doing this, keep an eye on your shilelds. If your shields are running low, hit the retro rockets, backing away until your shields recharge. Then hit the afterburners, closing the range.

Repeat until station is crippled.

SC, my thoughts exactly!

Yes, that's what I do, but I'll give you a part of a trick.

The starstations in bc3k can't shoot in their vertical axis, well not completely. So shoot by trying to say "over" or "under" the station, and it will be easier and faster.

Yeah I take on stations too. But I have another strategy.

When entering the starsystem I draw attention from the stations figthers. I battle them a while (rather far away form the station) and when there is no figther left I make some rounds round the station so it blow away as much missiles as possible. When I have a nice chain of missiles after me i turn to them and use my retro rockets to gain security distance. Then I target them and destroys them one by one (M key). Now the stations only defense is its IOD. I lay myself in PTA distance and fires with the IOD (80% intensity). When th station release its bursts of IOD I just changes my course and/or speed by moving up or down and using retro rockets. The IOD will miss becouse Im not in the spot the comp thaugth I would be. When Its emitting the SOS signal I dock with it and VOILA, Station captured! In about 10 minutes, with almost no damage and without aids as cloking systems, interceptors and missiles I have now conqured the enemy! You could ofcourse use them if you want, only make things better (faster)

Great way to gain EP and medals on

You guys do it the LONG and HARD way, this is the way I do it and Why I do it this way.

Get all your upgrades, buy as many vagrants as you can hold, including shuttles, lots and lots of radine.

Before you jump into the system with the station, cloak, then jump.

Go to the northpole of the station, sit about 7 klicks off the station, then launch EVERY vagrant in the magazine. Take the ship and move it to the southpole, stay CLOAKED!! reload the mags and fire again. The station should be hurting pretty badly by now. Set your IOD for 25-30% and pop her one shot at a time, keep moving north to south south to north, STAY CLOAKED!! When she starts screaming DOCK. You now have the station and the WHOLE complement of ships and fighters to defend her with as she is being repaired!!

You do not want to do this in BCM, your crew dies of radiation sickness, from the cloak being on for so long. But in BC3K it works like a champ!!!

Never said that it was a bad way to do it, I just like to have all those ships still in the station to use as I see fit.

Destroying the ships is NOT something that I want to do, I'd rather be able to use them then destroy them. Yeah, you get EP's for it, but I like to have that built in defense when I am finished.

You're right, you do. You also get medals, which was the original point of this topic. As for the top and bottom of the station, I never knew that. I'd try it, but I can't find anymore hostile stations.

So now I'm bombarding Gammula with Bungnors. God, I wish I had a RANDOM.

Not true any more for BC3K. The newest version of it (2.09) has the Radiation discharge from the Cloak.

I'm currently experimenting with a different tactic in capturing stations, which also works as a defensive tactic in Wing Commander when you're outnumbered and outgunned by a cap ship's fighter escort.

It's called the "Orbit of Doom". You do the math.

By the way, I captured Idan in the Zilon region and I didn't get any EPs or medals (grr!). Is it because I was playing in Ter/Ins FF instead of Galcom?

Shoot Krekol, You're right!! Shoot, forgot about that, haven't been playing BC3K in a LONG time, too busy with BCM!!

Thanks for bringing that to our attention!!

So, as used to be said "NEVER MIND!!" LOL

The EP.DOC file in the BC3K appendix contains the medals/EPs for capturing stations.

btw, in BC3K, you have do all of the above in one game session, because the capture counter is not stored in the saved game file. At least I don't think it is. That code was done back in 1/29/1999. Don't even think am saving it in BCM, but we'll find out soon enough.

Yes, I also think it is. I usually never captured more than one station at a time, and the medals I got seemed to increase in, uh, quality(?) as I captured more. I thought that the exact number of EPs and medals, varied based on the station you captured, but it seems I was wrong. (It made sence that the ones deeper in Gammulan territory were worth more)

Hmmm, it's interesting to see how this topic went from a little code check, to me bragging about my rank and medals and how I got them , to a discussion on the most efficient way to capture stations.

P.S. Am I violating some unspoken rule about posting in topics that haven't been touched for a long time?

No you are not Urza. You, unlike many others , are finding the topic that best suits your post and posting anew

If posting in old topic discussion threads was taboo then they would've been closed - aka locked.
