Newbie Questions (NOTE: Newbie by definition, not by skill!)

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I'm finally registered and would simply like to say that I love this game. Starting when I was 10 years old playing WC I on my 286, space combat has been my forte. I could go on and on about the bright points of this game, but in order to enhance the overall experiance for myself, I must ask several questions regarding gameplay.

1) How do I replace a fighter craft? I can buy the fighter asset but how do I deploy it? I cannot find any refence to this in any of the included text.

2) How do I retrive OC5 - OC8 once deployed? I'm flying the hulking Firestorm, and once I deploy OC5 - OC8, they are forever destined to roam the surface where I left them. In the shuttle waypoint actions menu, there are options to extract OC1 - OC4, why not OC5 - OC8? I've tried tractoring, having shuttle tow, to no avail.

3) Marine combat...is there anyway to issue orders to all or some of your marines once deployed? When my 40 marines are storming a base, it's quite difficult to click on each individual one and issue orders, why couldn't there be an option in TACOPS to issue orders to all or some marines, analogous to issuing fighter or shuttle commands?

4) OC Orders...My OC craft would not escort each other while I was putting them through there paces. If one leads it seems the others should be able to escort them, has anyone else had this problem?

5) What is the differance between escort and defend? It seems when I have my fighters escort my CC, they'll run and attack any hostile craft in the vacinity, while defend they'll stick by unless I am directly attacked. My problem with this is sometimes, while being escorted, I'll jump in system, and my escorts will run off immediatly to attack a base and get mauled. How can I prevent this?

Don't let my questions fool you, I am addicted to this game, and dare I say that it is the most advanced, in depth, thought provoking and engaging game I've ever played. I've read about how user input helps with development, so I offer my opinions. I look forward to any help anyone can offer on these questions. Thank you.

Greets goaliejerry!

I can answer some of your questions.

1]To replace an FC asset dock at a base and go to tradcom. Scroll the list and you'll see FCASSET. (i'm just saving up for one of mine... low AI pilot didn't know when to quit:) )

2]Hmm, not sure, I never deployed that many OC assets before. Someone else will have to answer this one.

3]If i remember correctly, this feature will be implemented in XP1. CAn't double check cause the XP1 info page is down.

4]Never tried it...

5]When I'm going to a region with a hostile base, especially now with the 1.0.06 revision, I dock the fighters. If I forget, i just give them a halt order as soon as they appear in system.

I'd be nice to tell them to completely avoid HJ to a base when they go in system, but for now just make sure to tell them not to jump to the base before they do so, or you're ~2million+ in the hole.

Cheers!

hehe, I like the topic.

As long as you are using the latest patch, you should be able to extract all vehicles and crafts. That one was fixed several versions ago.

You should be able to order any unit (marine or otherwise) using Tacops. There is no orders grouping - which is why you should use the Support Units tab in Tacops since it filters out only your own units.

Unless you give a unit specific orders to escort, they won't do it. They have no concept of a leader (unlike NPCs) since they are your units and you should make these decisions.

Read the manual regarding the differences between escort and defend. I describe them quite clearly in there - in several sections in fact.

SC, I just tried with the Firestorm, and I see what he means by not being able to give ther OC craft orders.

I even loaded up OC8 on a shuttle craft and deployed it to see if I would then have the option of picking it up, but like jerry said I didn't see it in the menu.

I set my waypoints [PIC]then let my shuttle do its work and deploy OC8.

Now, I can issue OC8 orders [PIC] But I am unable to tell the SC to pick it up [PIC] as I can only give it through OC4 like jerry said.

I'm a bit confused too as to how I'm supposed to pick it up.

Cheers!

I am playing the 1.07 patch. I had one AE with all the save slots filled with several day's saves. Tonight my AE was killed in action and the screen to 'accept' came up. Instead of accepting I shutoff my computer. Restarted and tried to resume. I was taken to the new set up screen. So I tried to restore a prior save, having done this in an earlier version. But this time the restore screen was blank, no saves, no AE, nothing. Is this what should happen??? I have read how others saved the game before doing something that got them killed. My save directory has the various saved games in it plus one extra file that has a time stamp when I got killed. All of my officers were finally above 65 AI, had 4 artifacts, 1.7 billion cash. Kapow all gone. Anything I can do to retrive my old save??

Well, if you didn't quit the game properly - as I'm QUITE CERTAIN that you didn't - thats what happens.

Reply with the list of files in the SAVE folder and let me see whats there.

Since you're not using the official version of the game, I doubt that I can do anything.

In my experience, when you die, this is recorded and saved to the QUICK save (which would be loaded when one "resumes"). Any FULL saves will not be affected... unless you turn off the computer, which is not a good idea at all... one can corrupt the OS that way.

At times, AS I was dying, I would hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and end the BCM task. SOMEtimes the QUICK save would not have been altered, but most of the time, I was dead.

I feel for you, but, well, good luck.

Sorry I must have stated the wrong name of my current patch. I am using the full v.1.0.07 which is current on the downloads page. I am not sure how to send you the files though. Should I use private e-mail or is there a way to attach them to this message? When the system hangs I turn off my computer and the restores are not wiped out, I would not think turning off the computer when you die would wipe the restores out. Thank you for your help.

I didn't ask you to send me any files. Read my post again. SLOWLY.

And while you're at it, go to the archives and show all topics. You should see a thread discussing saved games. Go from there.

I have been to the archive you mentioned, I didn't see anythning that would indicate why all saved games on restore screen disappear when you die. The files in the save folder are: player0.sg0 to player0.sg9 and player0.sgd. When I resume, I go to the start a new game screen. When I restore, I get a blank Restore screen, no AE listed. Since, you did not say so I hope I am useing the current version of the game.

You shutoff the computer thereby preventing the files, which was already open in memory, to be written to. It has either been (a) deleted or (B) corrupted.

That was such a SILLY thing to do, its not even funny.

I sent you to that archive so that you can read how the saved game files are constructed. If you don't understand it, I'm not going to explain it to you. Start a new career. Next time, you won't do something as stupid as what you did and think someone is going to spend their time on it.

And if you don't know why you are going to a new game screen when you try to restore a missing or KIA profile, go RTFM.
