New / Dumb Question

Hi,

I am brand new, so here's a dumb question.

How do I find the cities, etc., on a planet such as earth and others while flying on the surface

I don't have a zip drive yet to transport the 2.08 and 2.09 patches that I download at work to my home computer. Until I get one, can somebody give me a hint about finding the cities.

I have flown all over earth and haven't seen any manmade structures yet.

Thanks a bunch.

Hi Jupiter,

To get the cities, apply the 2.08 patch & the 2.08 map pack, these will give you the cities & military bases.

On another note. If you would like to join any of the fleets, take a look in the Fleets Forum. They're really gonna come alive when BCM is released!

without the mappack, either the cities are very hard to find or don't exist. If you can, try to download the files at home.

open Wordpad with a blank document. click "file" from the text menu at the top of the window. Click "Open" Then "Browse". Browse to Sol.scr in the bd300ad folder. (or wherever you put bc3000ad.) Look at the text and you will see the coordinates of the default cities.

There is an ancient thread lying around here somewhere with instructions on how to open a bc3k .scr (script) file as opposed to a Windows .scr (screensaver) file with a right click but darned if I can find it.

The Default cities can be found of you read the (bc3k) .scr files.

Hi Jupiter. I don't have anything to add to this thread because frankly, I'm having a similar problem. I'd just like to say Welcome Aboard and try not to crash into a mountain while yer lookin fer a city wink.gif

In short, highlight the file (single left click), hold down shift and right click the file. Select "Open with..." and select notepad, wordpad or the text editor of your choice.

I make an addition to the registry to add a "Script" option to the context menu. If you would like details on this, please email me at [email protected]

Whats the frigging point of opening a cryptic .SCR file when the PZONES.PDF file lists them already? Have you guys not been paying any attention?

LOL...somehow I lost the why of the original suggestion to look in the scr files. Been playing with the GBS all day, so opening an scr file was sittin' heavy on my mind.

What's the point of looking at pzones.pdf if you don't have the patches/mappak applied?

I was trying to think of a way jupiter87135 could look at something until he gets those files.

Jupiter, you're just going to have to let those files download at the house while you're surfing or something. Bet it will be faster than the time it would take to find a zip drive. Almost sounds like you aren't on the net at home though if you have to transport those files. The Pzones.pdf we are discussing is included in the manual appendix on the download files page.

...because the PDF file is not as cryptic as the .SCR file - which, it so happens, is not for the purpose of viewing. If it was, the PDF file would not have been created.

Seriously (ahem smile.gif), i don't have the mind of a 4 year old, i'm an original hacker (Don't freak newbies, i'm not into all that 31337 crap they show on MTV), so i'm pretty good at mental tests like these.

Try http://www.the-spark.com/iqtest for another interesting test.

I'm running version 2.0 because I the patches do not work on my system. When I install the patches, the game gets as far as the intro before crashing to windows. I'll soon be updating my system, I hope this fixes the problem. *Curses himself for forgetting to call the computer stores.....again smile.gif*

I had the same problem as you, but it wasn't my system. Post yer specs.

I solved my problem with a clean reinstall. I deleted everything then reinstalled the game and applied the patches and the map pak.

Also, did you DL the patches directly into your BC3K folder?

I already tried re-installing and no I didn't download them to the BC3K folder. How would that make a difference?

My Specs are as follows:

Cyrix MII 300 (that's 233mhz)

32MB RAM

4MB On-Board SiS Video Card (because it's on-board it takes away 4MB from the RAM)

36X Creative CD-Rom

Not sure what else you need to know, but I found out a couple months ago that there is a corrupt *.cab file on my Windows 95 CD. This *.cab file contains my Kernel32.dll file. I think this may be the problem, I'm getting the Windows 98 upgrade soon so that I don't need to format my hardrive....again wink.gif

It depends. Did you move the patch to the BC3K install folder before applying it?

Nope, I applied it from the directory I downloaded it into (the desktop) and then I moved it to the subdirectory of my desktop labeled Downloads.

Heh, you should've read the FAQ, then. If you had, you would have found this:

quote:

To download the patch, right-click on the file and select Save Target As to save it to

your BC3K install folder, i.e, C:BC3000AD. If you download it to your Desktop or elsewhere on

your hard drive, you
must
move it into the folder where BC3K is installed, before running

it.

I recommend you uninstall the game. Make sure to delete the BC3K folder. Then, reinstall the game, move the patches (v2.00-2.08 and v2.08-2.09) to the BC3K folder, then apply both. Also, this would be when you want to apply the Map Pak, but again, do so from your BC3K folder. Everything should work properly after you've done this.

Oh, and noting your system specs, make sure you don't try to run the game from the 3DFX icon.

Thanks Mike, I got it working now. Sheesh, I can't believe it was something as simple as that. I should read the instructions more closely next time. smile.gif
