Mongrol Posted March 9, 2001 Report Posted March 9, 2001 I remember trying V1.0 when it was released free a couple of years ago. Couldn`t get anywhere, but since BCM is due soon I thought I`d try it again. This time I d`loaded the 2.09 demo but I`m still up against this brick wall. My problem seems to be a complete lack of understanding where this "rich and dynamic" galaxy is... The manual does reasonably well at explaining all the various systems and so forth but doesn`t really give you any clues of how to get started at all. I launch from GalcomHQ... then what? I fly down to the planet... oh wait.. there`s nothing down there, can`t target anything, fly back up.... play with the systems, totally fail to see any perception of a populated universe, can`t find any systems for communicating with anyone. Ah wait, I can click on that space station and get another BC to follow me, cool.... Fly to Jupiter, land, still nothing, hmmm, not very good at exploring am I... take off... Insurgent enters the system absolutely miles away, then warps out... Give chase... go to another system, get battered with no warning, no communication.... am I missing something here or is this how everyone started? With any luck the hardcoreness of this game has been tamed a little in BCM with a gentler slope at the start, or at least a manual rewrite, and/or tutorial. In the meantime I refuse to give up till I understand how to interact with this thing. Any tips for a complete newbie?
Wold Posted March 9, 2001 Report Posted March 9, 2001 Hello and welome aboard.I don't know anything about the 2.09 demo. I started w/ ver 1.0 myself and got nowhere fast. Bought the 2.0 version and jumped in w/ both feet and got pretty much soaked. At which point I decided to read through the Tips and Hints section as well as the New Commanders section w/ no date restrictions. Learned a lot of things there that helped me last more then 10 game minutes.W/ the full version of 2.09 and the mappak installed there is ground combat available as well as missions if you choose the ACM option vs. free flight.BCM, can't say much there. There has been some published articles about it that will answer some of those questions. www.cdmag.com has a pretty good BCM preview writeup by Denny Atkins.------------------ Commodore Wold ICV-Drakr, Spectre HQ (Antis) Commanding Officer, Spectre HQ Spectre FleetICQ 4669033 "You can only love or hate something you truly understand"

Papi Posted March 9, 2001 Report Posted March 9, 2001 Hi Mongrol, you're in the same spot I was four years ago. This is huge game and without manual and few tips you're left in the space floating. But hey we're here to help you. First of click your shied indicator to get your shields up. Then press "P" key to activate your weapon system and your PTA (Passive Targed Acquisition. Then try left clicking anywhere in screen and you get menu with access to different computers. Try eg. navigation computer and order your ship to jump to different planet or system (I don't remember what systems are activated in demo) by clicking the planet in the star system in the map. Then press "A" key to activate auto pilot system and off you go. Well then all I have say to conclude this is... go and buy 2.0x game like Aramike said. ------------------ Cmdr Jason Cloud GCV Silver Lining, GENESIS (Moon) 26 Squadron Commander, 2nd squadron Prime fleet, Gamma Wing [This message has been edited by Papi (edited 03-09-2001).]
Mongrol Posted March 9, 2001 Author Report Posted March 9, 2001 I think I can go to Earth, Jupiter, the moon and Barnards Star (which has nasties in it). How do I target bases on planets? I fly down to earth and I know theres things there by looking at the map, but can`t seem to target any to go there and have a look.[This message has been edited by Mongrol (edited 03-09-2001).]

Epsilon 5 Posted March 10, 2001 Report Posted March 10, 2001 Hem... in the demo I remember I couldn't use Navitron (deactivated) and the home planet was Newearth, so I can't help.I never left Newearth region, and crashed on the ground first thing. Next time they'll teach newbies how to ribe a BC before giving them away. ------------------ Commander Epsilon 5 GCV - StalkerIV, Orion Starstation (CENTRIS) Deterrence Battle Group www.orionfleet.com 'This Far, No Farther!'
Kush Posted March 11, 2001 Report Posted March 11, 2001 The Rich and Dynamic universe is not in the Demo. The demo has a sliver of the rich and dynamic universe, because... well... it's a demo. Only meant to demonstrate the potential of the full game.If you can find a copy of the Interplay version, do. They are hard to find. And I really wish there was some way of patching the Take Two version of the game, but I don't think there is.If you can't find the game, then you're just going to have to sit and wait until BCM is released, which actually is going to be relatively soon. It's in beta testing as we speak. It looks like they've tackled alot of gameplay issues and are soon going to be implimenting the terrain engine. If I were you, I'd have fun goofing around with the demo for a bit, then put it away once you feel like you've got a handle on some of the gameplay elements. BCM is going to be slicker, more user friendly with a tutorial or some kind of training mission. Some of the skills you learn from the old version will be usless. Some won't. The whole game, however, will be ten times better than the last version. Have a bit of patience. They're almost there.
