Hey, just wondering if anyone is still playing the original UC. I picked it up in a store a while back, and haven't found the money to grab one of the newer copies.

So really, does anyone still feel like playing a MP game in UC, or just want to reminisce about the good old days?

We fleet types have a couple of UC servers that can be up on request, though they are invisible to the lobby. Just give us a time and we can arrange for one of them to be up. Ideally, you'd need to join a fleet for that, since they are 'fleet property' , but we can make an exception for your first time to get you hooked

nice. I'm still trying the roam and single player campaigns to get a feel for it and learn all the controls. I was so proud of myself when i finally learned to make planet fall with out blowing up or hitting the water! But yes, playing with some other players would be fun. How many fleets are there exactly? I know theres forum sections for them, and most have a website, but just as a quick list, how many?

Also, is there a UC general IRC chat? Or just fleet specifive ones?

We tend to just use IM for chat, or sometimes the lobby.

For a quick list, you can look here, though the Earthcom fleet listed there is currently inactive.

ok, i'll be reading those once i've had some sleep (not done so in, almost 3 days now). Anyway, care to share some memorable experiences? Lessons learned? I'll be reading the help guides soon, but i wana hear some of the funny or interesting things that have happened to other commanders etc.

ok. i've had some time to read what i can about most of the fleets. They seem to be a little inactive... Anywho, I've gotten a joystick, it makes flying alot easier, i'm becoming more familiar with controls, and starting to play the campaign bits.

Just a few questions about fleets. How exactly does rank work? does it go according to a rank in game, or based on your performance according to fleet commanders? In game scenarios, what are they, how do they work? Just general fleet info not included in the FAQ that you may think is note worthy.

This is a very unique game and very in depth. It's gona take a little for me to get used t it, and find time to pla as much as i would like.

It varies- Wraith, ISS and the Insurgents are the most active atm (though Wraith is still short of manpower), and are taking part in a test season of a new format of fleet play that may in the future be expanded to include UC players, if there is sufficient interest.

here are some after action reports from that.

The first post in this thread provides links to the scenarios used in that season

As for rank, it works differently in different fleets, since they are structured differently, and is generally not the same as single player, thought Prime fleet comes closest in that respect.

ISS and Wraith are respectively espionage and specops entities, though they get involved in a lot of combat as well, so security clearance rather than rank is the main ladder to climb.

The Insurgents have a completely different ranking system, I'd best leave it to them to explain how that works.

Basically, each fleet has a set of activities it takes part in or recognises as contributing to the fleet as a whole. Taking part in those gains you experience points. The more EP you have, the higher up in rank you go, the bigger responsibilities you have.

With Security clearance schemes, in addition to the possibility of extra responsibilities, you are given access to more advanced levels of tactical info and training (think brown belt, black belt, black belt 1st dan etc.) Lessons learned from MP are part of that and we don't want our opponents to know about them, so I can't tell you about those unless you join a galcom fleet and earn the appropriate security clearance.

ok, i printed parts of the appendix and read through that, and have a few more questions. Namely being, do the Insurgents give out court martial? is it basically a command setup like that of Galcom? Because i know i'd be court martialed fast

Mostly because i'm bad at following orders

I remember picking up this game in 2004, and I absolutely HATED it. However, I had a dream a few days ago about playing this (strange I know..), so I decided to pull it out and start playing again (there wasn't a tutorial back then, so it was easier to learn this time). I'm kicking myself for not seeing how great this game was way back when. This could perhaps be one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) game I've ever played.

I can't wait for BCNG, I read through the press release, but I'm hoping its like Universal Combat in terms of scale and what you can do (like a roam option).

Kudos to Derek and the rest of his team for making this game!!

BCNG is at least five years away, hence the reason it no longer appears on the forum. So there is no point in discussing how it will turn out.

The titles we are focused on for the next few years, have forum sections.

Thanks for the update, I posted that message before I read through the forums and read up on the 5-years note. I went out and bought a few copies of this game online so that I could give to my friends (Christmas Gifts) and get them over the learning curve.
