JoshB Posted December 10, 2001 Report Posted December 10, 2001 I thought a thread about mine laying tactics would be interesting. Does anyone have any effective tactics for mine deployment?I also have a problem: Is there a trick to laying leech mines?Crab mines work perfeclty, but when ever I deploy a leech mine it spins around in a circle on the radar screen until I try to move off, at which point it seems to follow alone behind me. If I stop a little further off, and try to deploy a second leech mine a hole gets blown in my ship. Am I the only one with this problem? Is there anything I could be doing wrong?[ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: AshSpear ]Delete the extra edited by messages whenever you edit a message.[ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: Tyrn ]

JoshB Posted December 10, 2001 Author Report Posted December 10, 2001 Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that. They seem to get stuck in the CC model and just hang around. I can ditch them if I go to hyperspace, but apart from that, I can't deploy a leech mine for the life of me. I've tried it in several ships, and the end result is that my mine launch bay gets blow to smitherines. Anyone else have more success?
Supreme Cmdr Posted December 10, 2001 Report Posted December 10, 2001 Depending on the ship, they are launched from under. So, in VTOL, launch them while moving UP at high speed, just like he said. And if that doesn't work, that means they are launched forward. So, hit the retros while launching and the ship will move back while the mine is shot forward.Remember, the ships are massive, compared to puny mines, so, the distance traveled has to be significant enough when you separate.[ 12-10-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
JoshB Posted December 11, 2001 Author Report Posted December 11, 2001 Would the grab mines and the leech mines be deployed the same way on a given ship? I generally fly around in a megaron, and the crab mines seem to get launched out the front, however leeches continuse to behave as I mentioned reguardless of whether I hit retors, or vtol straight up. If I keep moving after launch, they usually move to the opposite end of the radar display from my vector, but if I stop, they return to spinning around in the lower/center. If I target them, the distance never changes. Anyway, I'll keep experimenting.[ 12-11-2001: Message edited by: AshSpear ]
Joel Schultz Posted December 11, 2001 Report Posted December 11, 2001 Here's a fun thing to try with leeches: after you deploy the first and it gets "stuck" to your ship try deploying a second. What happened for me: well - let's just say that second leech blew the first one clear. Along with most of my hull and lower decks...
JoshB Posted December 11, 2001 Author Report Posted December 11, 2001 That is exaclty how I discoved the problem. I had just been bragging that even a station couldn't beat down my linear/IV shields, when I decided to experiment with mines... I dropped three in quick succession and blew much ship to hell. It's been parked on Krystar acting as a training ground for me CE for hours now. It's good to know that I'm not the only twit though. I wish I could get it to work though, so I could be more effective at takling cloaked bad guys.

JoshB Posted December 11, 2001 Author Report Posted December 11, 2001 Sorry. That's what I had meant by "get it to work."[ 12-11-2001: Message edited by: AshSpear ]

I just checked the dynamics of both mines and they are the same. So, they should both be launched at the same speed and I see no reason why one would stick to your ship.
JoshB Posted December 12, 2001 Author Report Posted December 12, 2001 If your interested, I could package up a saved game with one stuck in my ship, and you could check it out. It's pretty weird. I decided to do a hull surch in fp, and when I go near the mine everything freaked out... I can't describe it any better than that. Anyway, thanks again for the time. Cheers
JoshB Posted December 15, 2001 Author Report Posted December 15, 2001 Ok, I still can't deploy a leech mine without it getting stuck in my hull. I do NOT understand.
Guest Posted December 15, 2001 Report Posted December 15, 2001 send me that saved game, id love to see it. walking in fp to a mine.. lol

JoshB Posted December 16, 2001 Author Report Posted December 16, 2001 Do you really want to see it tac? Just let me know where to send it. I'll go and find that thread about how to send them... I did a hull search once with my AE to investigate the problem and it was as if I got caught on it and started spinning around too.
Supreme Cmdr Posted December 21, 2001 Report Posted December 21, 2001 Let me know if the new mine launching direction in 1.0.03 solves your problem.
JoshB Posted December 21, 2001 Author Report Posted December 21, 2001 That did it SC. Works like a charm. Many thanks. Cheers
