Scrivener Posted December 10, 2004 Report Posted December 10, 2004 The new teaser trailer for War of the Worlds is now online at http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/waroftheworlds/ . I must say, it's pretty chilling to watch. Definately has that dark and foreboding feel - which has given a little hope to this man's tortured soul. Spielberg may deliver on this one after all... definately upper-end PG13 material. I still doubt it will come anywhere near touching on my own vision of the property, but it may nevertheless be the dark and sinister movie it needs to be. I think that someday I will still do it. 20 years from now if it needs to be. The book gave me nightmares for weeks as a kid - and the images in my head still scare me today. The trailer is but a tiny glimpse of that terror - and yet, I am VERY glad to have actually seen it; even if Spielberg does wimp out on the rest. I guess we'll have to wait and see... but War of the Worlds has officially skyrocketed to the top of my anticipated movies list. Every director has their dream project - War of the Worlds is mine. Spielbergs war movie experience may help on this - but the war against earth... it's not about military. The martians were at war against HUMANITY - innocent people - we're not even talking nazis - we're talking creatures who land on earth in overwhelming numbers with only one goal: destroy every human without grief, hesitation, or politics. A truely terrifying concept, even to me. Will Spielberg deliver the fear, paranoia, and hopelessness - or will he wimp out and give us another Minority Report? I had hoped for a true interpretation of HG wells book same timeline and all or even a follow up to HG wells book where the little critters learned their lesson from the first attack and is going to give it another go. From watching the trailer (what little that's shown) it's kinda reminiscent of the 1950's interpretation of War of the Worlds. Just my opinion.
Scrivener Posted December 10, 2004 Author Report Posted December 10, 2004 There is actually a little indie studio working on ANOTHER War of the Worlds film that is supposed to be dead-on faithful to HG Well's book - time period and all. Check Pendragon Pictures for info on that project. Personally, I want to see a modern/near future version with a large cast, as opposed to a single pivotal protagonist. Something like MAGNOLIA but with an alien invasion... where everyone dies in the end. That would be nice.

Guest Grayfox Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 oh yes... very nice, but tom cruise though? cmon... i always loved the "humanity getting screwed" movies... loved armageddon (that was all about getting screwed), loved day after tomorrow (we caused our own screwing in that one), and i really enjoyed deep impact (getting screwed and nothing you can do about it). the acting may have not been all too great in any of these, but the whole premise was awesome... how many times can humanity get screwed? summer 2005 eh? look out, here comes another "blockbuster"

Man, you're really lowering the bar for expectations. Whats going on there bud? Puberty or old age?

People coming out not knowing what is going on. I've seen that - in my dreams - in my head. That very scene - I've seen it before. That's what gives me hope... at least, a small hope. A hope of hope. There is a tiny, infinitesimal chance that it might not suck. That is the straw at which I grasp. Don't bring me down - there's too many bad movies on the slate right now and I'm having a tough time containing my utter disgust at all the cinematic refuse and miscellaneous gobbledygook being pushed (Did someone say "Racing Stripes"? OMG *VOMIT*).

Apart from that in the book the martians got lucky, If they had attacked after the invention of gass-masks their cheesy "Black Smoke" wouldn't have worked and they would have been beaten by force of numbers.
