I have to say, I was disappointed with the coverage of the convention this year.

First off, the broadcast networks scaled back coverage to three hours over four nights -- one hour per night with one night off. The night off was Teresa's night. What this allows them to do is, instead of the voting (non-cable) public seeing for themselves, they will hear the network pundits gush over how well she did, how positive Edwards' speech was, and how pointed and specific Kerry's speech was, planting an impression that the voter was denied seeing for himself. You can bet when the Republican convention rolls around, that the opposite will happen -- the network pundits will say how poorly Bush spoke, how negative Cheney was, etc., without the public tuning in to see for themselves.

Second, on the cable shows, unlike past conventions when they actually showed the convention, they had the pundits in the skyboxes overlooking the convention as a backdrop, but the pundits were talking over the speakers, saying what the speakers were saying, but not showing the speakers themselves. They were making them (and their coverage) the focus instead of the speakers and the party.

Unless one watched the C-SPAN coverage (which I did not, but maybe will in September), the coverage was disgraceful. For an event that happens only once every four years, they could have lived up to their public service obligations and just showed the thing.

They then read the campaign statements of three hypothetical candidates for governor, each with a different leadership style. One was charismatic, said Solomon.

"That was a person who declared our country to be great and the people in it to be special," Solomon, who worked on the study, said in a telephone interview.

The others were task-oriented -- focusing on the job to be done -- or relationship-oriented -- with a "let's get it done together" style, Solomon said.

Fearing doom, choosing charisma

The students who thought about death were much more likely to choose the charismatic leader, they found. Only four out of about 100 chose that imaginary leader when thinking about exams, but 30 did after thinking about death.

Greenberg, Solomon and colleagues then decided to test the idea further and set up four separate studies at different universities.

"In one we asked half the people to think about the September 11 attacks, or to think about watching TV," Solomon said. "What we found was staggering."

When asked to think about television, the 100 or so volunteers did not approve of Bush or his policies in Iraq. But when asked to think about Sept. 11 first and then asked about their attitudes to Bush, another 100 volunteers had very different reactions.

"They had a very strong approval of President Bush and his policy in Iraq," Solomon said.

Solomon, a social psychologist who specializes in terrorism, said it was very rare for a person's opinions to differ so strongly depending on the situation.

Another study focused directly on Bush and his Democratic challenger, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

The volunteers were aged from 18 into their 50s and described themselves as ranging from liberal to deeply conservative. No matter what a person's political conviction, thinking about death made them tend to favor Bush, Solomon said. Otherwise, they preferred Kerry.

"I think this should concern anybody," Solomon said. "If I was speaking lightly, I would say that people in their, quote, right minds, unquote, don't care much for President Bush and his policies in Iraq."

He wants voters to be aware of psychological pressures and how they are used.

"If people are aware that thinking about death makes them act differently, then they don't act differently," Solomon said. Solomon says he personally opposes Bush but describes himself as a political independent who could vote Republican.

This reminds me of the Reagan days when almost every point of Reagans policies were scrutinized as "Evil".

Let's see what were those points again.

1. Reagan lowers trade barriers:

Pundits - You see Reagan only wants big business to make money, he wants all the jobs to go to Japan and Taiwan.

Reality - Lowering trade barriers made American company's more competitive in the world plus forced them to STOP raising prices (remember inflation was 12% in those days).

2. Reagan administration increases interest rates:

Pundits - Reagan wants the unemployment rate to go even higher, it's already at 11%, he just wants his rich buddy's to get more money in their savings accounts.

Reality - The combination of raising interest rates and lowering trade barriers effectively put a halt to inflation to the point where the U.S. today has the most stable monetary system in the world.

3. Reagan lowers taxes on the rich, introduces "Supply side" economics.

Pundits - "Vodoo Economics" is more like it, he really loves his rich friends and hates the working class!

Reality - When was the last time a poor man gave you a job? The Carter years of "tax the rich guy at 75%" was idiotic and short sighted, how can your boss give you a raise or provide more jobs if the government's taken all his money? Only a Moron would believe otherwise. Reagan's policy of lowering taxes, helped to create the biggest job boom since WWII.

4. Reagan eliminates Carter's "Oil Import Control Program"

Pundits - Reagan just wants the oil company's to make a windfall, that bastard.

Reality - There NEVER really was an oil shortage! Opec ANNOUNCED that they were cutting production, but never did, Carter's control program is what CAUSED the shortage that had lines during the 70's and caused gas prices to go from 40cents a gallon to 1.25 a gallon, over a 3 fold increase. Only a few months after Reagan eliminated that program Gas prices began a downward spiral that would lead to them cutting in half over the next 2 years!

What's the point of all of this? Easy, Just as with Reagan, all Democrats and some Republicans look at what is said in the media and assume, Oh, this guy must be Evil, he has the worst intentions in mind. However years later Reagan was hailed as one of the Greatest presidents of our time and I believe history will have the same story to tell of President Bush.

You might have missed this, but a few days ago Teresa revealed on National Public Radio that the recipe she submitted to Family Circle magazine for its election year cookie bake-off was not hers.

Mrs. Heinz Kerry had originally submitted a recipe called Yummy Wonders, but, according to Family Circle, its test kitchen said the recipe did not work. When the magazine called her press office and asked if there had been a mistake, the press office sent the pumpkin cookie recipe without consulting her, said her press secretary, Marla Romash.

Whether she would have fessed up had the cookies been tasty is a matter that the historians will have to resolve.

I'm sure there are those who regard playing fast and loose with cookie recipes as of great/no (take your choice) importance, but what may be of some significance is the hint of an underlying paranoid style that pops up from time to time around Kerry's inner circle. Consider:

In an interview on National Public Radio that was broadcast yesterday, the cookies came up in conversation and in the direct, unvarnished style that people have come to expect, Mrs. Heinz Kerry said: "Somebody at my office gave that recipe out and, in fact, I think somebody really made it on purpose to give a nasty recipe. I never made pumpkin cookies; I don't like pumpkin spice cookies."

Direct, unvarnished ... blame of others (in this case her own staff) for attempting to bring her down.

There was no "dirty trick" behind the photographs of Sen. John Kerry wearing the blue anti-contamination suit while touring the shuttle Discovery on Monday.

As political pundits and comedians pounced on the pictures of Kerry in what outsiders might deem a goofy-looking costume, the senator's campaign aides alleged the pictures were not supposed to be released publicly.

Not true, said NASA. Government photographers routinely snap pictures of visiting dignitaries.

Furthermore, NASA spokesman Bill Johnson said the Kerry campaign asked that the pictures be taken of the senator's unusually up-close tour of the Discovery and that processing be expedited so reporters could have them.

The pictures have prompted chuckles and jokes among political pundits covering the Democratic National Convention in Boston because, to people unfamiliar with shuttle operations, the head-to-toe light-blue suits look goofy.

No, what looks goofy, even mildly paranoid, is this habit of attributing everything that goes a bit wrong to the "dirty tricks" of others, presumably the all-powerful and ubiquitous "Republican attack machine" whose tentacles extend from NASA all the way into Teresa's kitchen.
