Intel CEO: Candidates Ignore Tech Debate

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Intel Corp.'s chief executive on Tuesday decried the lack of attention by the presidential nominees to how the United States is losing its competitive edge over other nations on education, technological infrastructure and research and development.

"This is what you don't see being debated by our two presidential candidates today," Craig Barrett told several thousand workers from the high-tech industry at the Gartner Symposium ITXPO at Walt Disney World.

In the past decade, 3 billion people from India, China, Russia and Eastern Europe have joined the world economic system, Barrett said. Many of them have well-educated engineers and they're going to compete with the United States for jobs, he added.

"What we're debating about instead is how we're going to protect a textile worker in South Carolina," Barrett said. "The future of the United States is not pillowcases."

Unlike the Soviet Union's launching of Sputnik in 1957, which was a sudden wake-up call in the United States that the nation was falling behind technologically, the current decline has been incremental, said Barrett, who described Americans as "blase" about information technology.

"The United States, unfortunately, is very good at ignoring incremental messages," he said.

Barrett said the nearly $20 billion the United States annually spends on agricultural subsidies could be better spent on education and research and development.

"What do you think the industry of the 21st century is going to be? Agriculture?" he said. "We're sending our workers into the marketplace with a disadvantage: their education.

"We'll wake up to that eventually. I wish it was part of the debate. But you didn't see it in any of the three presidential debates."

In reguard to U.S. education, you can blame the social promotion program on that. Now I can't seem to find who started this, when or why but it has the smell of Democrats all over it. I can tell you it's failed miserably here in NYC. Maybe the reason why there's so many unemployed in my howm town NYC and else where across the nation as Kerry stated in his debate.

Actually, we should give's the Japanese School System a try

Our school's would have MORE declipline and would be able to expel those that just love to cause problems and won't follow the rules

I was in Japan a couple year's ago, and what I observed from most of the student's, just prove's WHY japanese are SMARTER than the US

Yes, I've said it... Japan is smarter than us in the educational area... reason why I wish I had attended school in japan (I had a chance, cause a friend of mine back in the 4th grade went to japan.. but I lived in a fantasy world thinking US was better.. boy how wrong was I)

Jamatto, you'll NEVER see our school system change. Believe it or not, our government want's to keep us where they want us because they want to "take care" of us, in other words.. dumbing down the student's

Back in school, I knew several student's who where smart as hell... A+ right across the board (then again, I was a O+ student *outstanding citizenship student) however the school continued to keep them in a low class *IE Special Ed or low equizalent class*

Kinda sad really.. that's why a lot of parent's try to get there kid's into a Private School

The PS I work for (part time job that I do over a couple of 2 week's, which in turn I do my other part time job for another 2 week's, and I switch between them) has such a long list of students, that those that send in an ap for one grade might not get in till 2-3 grade's later

THAT'S how crowded the private school entry list's are

The thing I don't like about the Japanese school system is the overuse of entrance exams for elementary schools and high schools everybody should have equal opportunity to enroll, especially at above mentioned level of education.
