Freyar Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 I'm looking for a replacement for the Windows XP defragmenter. I have 23% of the disk free and that's all I can squeeze out, yet no matter how often I run it, it still does not get any better. Does anyone know why this is, and is there a better tool to get this annoying but needed task done quickly?
paranide Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 I'm not really sure about this but if I'm right, a defragmenter wouldn't help you to have more space on your HD,it just makes the HD used more efficientely,as the defragmenter would"collect"all the scattered files on your HD and bring them together,so that the HD's arm doesn't have to move all over the complete HD to get some data that is needed by an application. To get more space, you would use an disk cleaner tool. Here is a link to both defrag-and disk cleaner tools if you want to use other tools than those included in windows http://www.downloadmix.de/dmix/index.asp?D...+tab%5Fsoftware %2Eactiv%3D1+Order+by+update%5Fdatum+DESC&PageNo=2 or http://www.canadiancontent.net/tech/downlo...ddrive+Tools/1/
Freyar Posted May 16, 2005 Author Report Posted May 16, 2005 Yeah, I know the difference between Defragmenting and disk space... (There isn't even a single similarity). In anycase, I also need a tool to defragment the MFT as my disk as been down to around 19MB free a few times... I've tried the windows defragmenter, however it doesn't do anything other than move one file, and create wear on the drive.
Matchoo Posted May 18, 2005 Report Posted May 18, 2005 I don't know if it would help, but I wrote a program that scans any of your drives and gives you a breakdown in a tree control of how much space each directory (including subdirectories) is using. I wrote it because I would fill a 40 gig hard drive and not know where it went, but after running it I could see that some programs I thought were fairly small and I never use were actually taking up far more space than I thought. Let me know if you're interested and I can send it to you.
Freyar Posted May 18, 2005 Author Report Posted May 18, 2005 I am interested... Mail address should be in my profile.. if not PM me?
