Marc Wubbema
Ah well, less people will start using WinZip, more people will start using Winrar, Winace, 7-Zip, ect ect. I never did like Winzip anyway, Winrar can compress files a great deal better
LostInSpace
Don't remember the last time I used winzip. I use primarily WinRar.
jamotto
I mainly use a Winzip clone (Filzip), If I really need a high compression ratio I use 7-Zip does a better job than WinRar.

Papi
I used FilZip, but moved to Ultimate Zip for it's better features.
Captain McMahon
So which one is better at compressing? I've been using WinRar, but lately I haven't been noticing any compression. If I take a group of pictures that are 1.35 MB then place them into a WinRar file, the WinRar file is 1/35 MB. That's not right, is it?
Marc Wubbema
Well you can't compress something that's allready compressed, at times if you compress JPG files, the ZIP (or RAR) file can end up bigger then the file you wanted to zip

That's not right, is it? Well if you use Winzip 9's Enhanced Deflate, it gives you compression ratios that are just as good as any other compression program, the difference is that since a heck of a lot more people have Winzip, the probability is that if you email a file to someone, they will have a better opportunity of opening it, than if you use another program. Also, let's face it, it's just not fair to expect someone to do something for you, and you not compensate that person, I bought Winzip YEARS ago, when it first came out, later when I wanted to add the outlook feature (that automatically zips Outlook attachments) I bought it again because it was so long ago since I bought my first copy (even though I didn't HAVE to). If you guys want a company to continue to provide a quality product, then you should show that company your support buy purchasing a license, otherwise we'll end up with more Garbageware than professionally done software. Spindoktor
At some point in a recent version, you have to wait for the "days installed" counter to count to the current day before the "use evaluation" button became enabled. That was the day I stopped using that version (9 perhaps?). I cycled down to version 8.1 or something. So, I still use it. Old habits die hard. And I could give a rats a** about getting another nanosecond decompress time using another app. Winzip or bust!!
Gryphon
I am apalled that none of you have mentioned PKWARE and PKZIP/SecureZIP. I'm not bringing this up just because I'm their PR guy, either
Spindoktor
pkware/pkzip? Awww, memories of those DOS command line days. No disrespect intended. They are the fathers of the genre.

Their software is more focused on businesses, but PKZIP for Windows and SecureZIP for Windows kick ass when it comes to security options.
